I don't know how to play these games anymore. As they grow larger or more populated with loot, locations and activities, I get entirely lost in the monotony and unfortunately I tend to neglect the story, which I value as much as gameplay. After 30-40 hours or so I had to pry myself away from it, the grind of driving from one location to the next was having a very unpleasant effect on my self-worth, so if you're prone to mood swings I don't recommend playing it every day. The grind of looting is best illustrated by the random friendlies you encounter, because so little thought has been put into those encounters that they're often a tonal mess of mismatched writing and animations, making them utterly pointless, scrap or no scrap.

I was shocked by the performance I managed to get out Mad Max using my aging laptop, without even meeting the minimum GPU requirement, so the first thing you'll notice is an incredibly well optimized game that keeps the spirit of its art design even when everything is turned off or set to Normal. I didn't have to lower the resolution to get a relatively solid 30fps, sometimes close to 40-50fps. It's even more miraculous when you drive to the very edge of the map and fall off, to fully appreciate the size and beauty of this game world. I haven't done it myself, but I watched a video. At least the people who still think the world is flat can find solace in video games.

After taking a break from it I returned with missions in mind, so I completed one after another and got back into enjoying the story and being focused enough to complete it. This game isn't defined by it's story, but it does a good job keeping you relatively invested, along with upgrades that are tied to story missions. They're important if you want to get the most out of your abilities and your vehicle. Apart from Chumbucket though, the characters are forgettable and I don't appreciate it when a part of the story is spoiled with a loading screen.

Despite the harsh rules of the world that George Miller created with his films, I didn't feel like Max handing over entire territories to Jeet, Gutgash, Pink Eye and Deep Friah was justified enough to run all these errands for them. Fully upgrading a stronghold provides you with all the necessities, but what's the point of upgrading all of them if you can just fast travel to the first one to restock? Is the player required to upgrade all strongholds in order to access Gastown? I just find it presumptuous when I have a map in front of me from the very start with these territories already divided among the four of them. It's not like you're going to stop seeing bad guys once the threat level in a territory is brought down to zero. The stakes aren't high enough for everyone involved and it's a relatively easy game with simple combat.

The combat is fun and you'll get used to it very fast, especially when you've played other games with similar combat. The fun is extended to car combat as well and this is where I have to emphasize the importance of doing missions frequently, otherwise it will become a drag if you don't upgrade your car and weapons. That being said, scrap is everywhere and most of the upgrades can be acquired with scrap, so looting plays a big part in Mad Max, whether you like it or not. The most fun you can have looting is by taking on a camp, which are thankfully very different in design, number of enemies, etc.

A part of me felt like I had to postpone a final mission most of the time, looking at the mission indicators that would appear on Deep Friar and right after on Gastown, mostly due to how they hyped up The Jaw and the territories being divided so distinctly. When seeing the indicators I was afraid that this was it, a fight with an army of vehicles and a big boss, which is why I cowered to looting and upgrading as often as I could. The game didn't even have to convince me of it, at first sight I thought The Jaw was the entrance to Gastown, but it was only the gate between the two halves of the map. Don't make the same mistake, you're perfectly safe to enter Gastown the first chance you get, as long as you can survive the trip over there.

It's satisfying to explore a game world for the first time and recent years have given us great open world games. Mad Max is no different, but it's more closer to the Far Cry series, cos it has a lot to do with taking down camps or fortresses, if you like. It can be a barrel of fun in shorter bursts, but for me it's bogged down by several minor annoyances and missed opportunities. Despite it being a beautiful wasteland, with all it's limitations, they could've done a better job in making it more believable, starting with the friendly encounters. Nevertheless I recommend it, especially when you're an avid explorer and want to get more out of your aging PC or laptop.

I've never played a game set inside a pop-up book, so it's unique and it looks the part. The soundtrack is lovely, though there seems to be some sound issues. It's short, less than 2 hours, but that didn't bother me. You interact with the game by clicking and swiping, so it's also great for mobile platforms, especially tablets. The puzzles are nice and simple, so it's a good way to relax for a few hours.

If you like this game, then a good companion piece would be the movie Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring (2003).

Nothing I say will make a difference at this point. I've dreaded reviewing Valve games since Steam reviews first started, because it's a developer I've placed on a very high pedestal, so objectivity is not on the menu. Half-Life 2 is something you've already played long ago or something you sought out just recently, because you wanted more from an FPS.

For the past 7 years or so, I've been on a quest to watch movies that left a permanent mark in film history. I sought out those films for that reason alone. If you're on a similar quest with games, you're bound to meet Half-Life 2 on your path. It's a special breed of FPS, an experience so refined that to this day it stands above the rest in the genre, which is why it's my nominee for The "Test of Time" Award in the first Steam Awards.

If you are completely new to Half-Life, the most envious position to be in, all things considered, then start with the first game. Half-Life, Half-Life: Source or Black Mesa, take your pick. Half-Life 2: Update is another thing to experience. And congratulations, you are now part of the most desperate group of people among gamers. The wait of a sequel and may it be as short as possible for you. Savor your journey from Half-Life to Episode Two and after you've replayed them once or twice, maybe, just maybe you will then hear the happy news we've all been waiting for.

Shadow Complex was once an Xbox Live Arcade exclusive that broke sales records at the time and its Remastered (Unreal Engine 4) launch was free for nearly a whole month last year as a Holiday gift via the Epic Launcher. I got it just recently through Humble Bundle for a dollar. They didn't have to do any of this, so it's worth mentioning.

In Shadow Complex you play a guy and you will have control over a very powerful suit, which you put together piece by piece by following the story. The story is about rescuing a girl and killing bad guys, barring the twist at the very end. This is wholly uncharted territory for writers, so I'm glad someone was finally brave enough to craft this original tale. In all seriousness, it's fine, but a "faceless" villain is no excuse. What matters is the overall experience. Much like Crysis, this game is about having fun with a suit. It's also a game of collecting items and the stronger your suit, the easier it gets. Opening a map to get health, armor, weapon and ammo upgrades is a thing you do here and I like doing it. You also collect keycards and gold, to access a suit upgrade and to open a secret room respectively.

Once you get to a speed upgrade, I guarantee you're going to have a lot of fun. Getting there can be a bit of a hurdle though, cos to me it seemed like grabbing onto ledges was a thing of luck, even with the jet pack. I experimented with low ventilation shafts to see a pattern and I didn't notice one. Maybe it's more responsive with a controller, I wouldn't know. It's not a big issue as long as you keep upgrading your suit and leave those tougher collectibles for a later time. This remastered game includes the occasional glitch (textureless save room, weird ragdolls, etc), but in only one case I had to reload a save. Other than that it's a solid product worth the full price tag.

For the completionists and for the easily annoyed it's going to wear you down a bit. The map is not very detailed, certain vents only work one way, elevators aren't indicated and you won't remember those finer details until you've made it to that particular area, only to realize that you can't go that way or that you hate elevators, cos certain elevators only open one way. Vents that are connected to elevator shafts, riding on top of elevators or hanging underneath them can drive you bonkers with this particular map. There is a better map if you get the DLC, which is not cool, but like I said, I paid a dollar for this. It's not fun when you're trying to get those remaining achievements. When faced with the final mission, you can't cross the map on the surface either (the right side), cos it triggers the mission. There is no free roam after you complete the game, only your last save before the final mission. It's not a game breaker, it's just annoying.

Not to end on a sour note, cos I sank 20 fun-filled hours into this before getting frustrated and I haven't tried Proving Grounds yet, the challenge room thingy. If you like side scrollers with platforming and a power suit with cool abilities, then this is a very easy recommendation to make. The game also features very fun melee takedowns and fun achievements. The more you play the more interesting it gets. Soundtrack is also quite nice. The Humble Unreal Engine Bundle is still there for the taking.

If you missed out on the magic of Rapture back in 2007 there is no better time to jump in. Despite the little bugs, a crash or lack of options in the current version, the additional features make up for the shortcomings, which should be patched in due time. BioShock Remastered is my third time in Rapture and the first time the game opened itself up to me. While the world was always immersive, lousy physics aside, I found the gameplay clunky and repetitive. As an immersive world, Rapture is a joy to explore though, so I was not surprised that this time I had missed only one Audio Diary.

BioShock now has achievements. Thankee-sai! That wasn't the case back in 2007, which was a different time, obviously. As someone who likes achievements in my single player games, they are often the best way to learn about every aspect of a game on your journey to a 100% and this was no different. The Research Camera, for example, was something I didn't fully understand at the time or the various tonics with their bonuses, but now I realize they're an ally for harder difficulty levels. I've only ever played it on Medium.

I haven't tried the Challenge Rooms yet, but one thing I enjoyed immensely and not found in the original, are the developer commentary film reels scattered throughout the game. The video commentary, hosted by Geoff Keighley, gave me a newfound respect for BioShock and what that small team had pulled off almost 10 years ago. BioShock owes so much to its voice acting talent, which I guess is a passive aggressive way of saying the writing wasn't all that compelling, but that's only partly true for me. Another thing that holds back the writing in this case are outdated character models. I mostly attribute the success of the writing to bringing the world to life, than to its twists and turns and conclusion. I can tell you the names of the main characters, but none of them have cemented their presence over the years.

BioShock is an amalgam of genres and with successful results, something I can finally agree with being a modern classic. I often envy the connection fans have with certain games, games I don't click with at all, like F.E.A.R., Far Cry or Crysis, but if BioShock Remastered has taught me anything, it's worth giving a game another shot, especially when so much effort has gone into bringing a game world to life. An art style not found in many games and ultimately it's a period piece with the appropriate music and use of language and all in the form of an FPS. That is rare and something I always respected about BioShock. The terrible physics are still there, but at least it doesn't look as plastic anymore, once the textures have popped into place. I hope a grumpy "BioShock is meh" person is reading this, cos here's to you having a good time.

An excellent action adventure side scroller with puzzles and a superb story. If you haven't finished it, please do and if you haven't bought it, please do. I picked this up for a measly 0,99€, but even if you buy it at full price I doubt you will be disappointed. To be clear, it's an episode, so it's on the shorter side (I completed it in 4.5 hours), but the ending is entirely satisfactory (don't sue me if you see it coming), so I've no qualms with the length. The writing is great, often witty and backed up by excellent voice work. Portal fans should definitely take a look.

Camera and player movement can get somewhat annoying as you try to line up for equipment interactions or grab onto ledges, which happened rarely, but it's the only unpleasant thing I can remember to point out. The camera jumps to the next area after you've crossed a certain point on the screen, but you'll get used to it. It's a side scroller. Puzzles are just of the right difficulty, though I did consult a walkthrough here and there. Though the gunplay is too easy, I think it warrants another playthrough for the story, cos the writing and voice work really are top notch. Either way you'll be missing some achievements on your first run, some of which are time-sensitive.

I've no idea if the developers are working on another episode, I would love to continue this story, but I think it's also nicely self-contained and well delivered, so I won't hold a grudge if this is where it ends. Over The Moon Games can be proud of what they accomplished here.

Edit:

As I checked their website, they announced Part 2 in August, with a Q1 2017 target date, so there you go. More to come. Sweet. It's nice to discover games 2 years after they've come out, with another episode not that far away.

I imagine it's going to get harder and harder for the developers to surprise fans of this series. The Room taught me the mechanics, while The Room Two took me through the motions. You make faster associations, you have a better idea what you could interact with and there's a fair amount of repetition as well. I enjoyed going through the motions, but The Room is the more challenging game by default.

I've always thought it would be great to selectively wipe my memory clean, just so I can watch The Game (1997) for the first time, a second time. I wish I could also wipe my memory of experiencing this and the previous game, just so I can enjoy The Room Three more. What I'm saying is, I can't view these puzzles objectively and even though it feels like they're easier puzzles regardless of my previous experience, I can't say for sure.

In real life you have "escape rooms", which are more and more popular these days, though I've yet to enter and escape one myself. I haven't played The Room or its sequel on a tablet or a phone, with the tilting and the zooming and the turning and the swiping and honestly, it makes more sense to play them that way, cos on the PC it turns into another point and click game. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just not as unique here. I suppose they can make the rooms even more interactive and I doubt a VR game is that far off in the future, but seriously, how long can you keep this fresh and interesting?

I would love to play a set of VR puzzles in rooms like these one day, cos real life escape rooms have their own limitations. These sort of games seem like a perfect fit for VR. There's a surprising amount of story in The Room Two, with cutscenes and everything, though I rarely paid attention to reading the letters and notes. If you enjoyed The Room then you will pick this up sooner or later, cos it scratches a rare itch, if you will, so it feels really good to scratch that itch.

While the controls are better suited for tablets and other mobile devices and aside from missing textures getting me properly stuck at the end of Chapter 2, this is a very cool game. The only thing that's missing here is Nicholas Cage going all National Treasure on these puzzle boxes. Now if someone can make a great game around the concept of Fort Boyard and The Crystal Maze, then you have my utmost respect and gratitude.

If there's ever been a game best suited for DLC then this would be it, but thankfully The Room Two is just around the corner and I assume the third iOS/Android game will be ported to PC as well. I imagine these are some of the best games available on tablets. The puzzles are very satisfying to solve and the design of the boxes themselves is really something. Go get it!

P.S. Missing textures reappear when you change the Preset under Graphics Settings.

I couldn't post a review under the Redux version, so I had to install the 10GB original and run it for 5 minutes. The Redux version took me 4.7 hours to finish, so pay no attention to the time on record. It's the same game, story-wise and otherwise-wise.

This would be the first game I'd recommend if you hated Dear Esther. It's hard not to compare the two, but The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is more of a game whereas Dear Esther was an experience or experiment in storytelling. To me it was an unforgettable experience, rarely a game has crawled under my skin like Dear Esther, but truth be told, I've only finished it once. That doesn't take away the goosebumps and the emotions I went through, but replayability is an important thing to any gamer. I can't help but sneer at the term walking simulator though, cos it sort of closes the door on any experiment or game not conforming to the norm. While gameplay is king, I'd rather have access to new ideas than play the 400th Mario game, because the platforming is so timeless. Restricting player movement in a game goes against every instinct in your body, cos games are supposed to be liberating experiences, but on the other hand you have highly scripted games that are rewarded with your hard-earned €60 for doing the exact same thing.

Our notions of pricing is another thing that's put to the test when playing these sort of games, which is understandable, but Ethan Carter steps comfortably out of the danger zone of being completed in 2 hours on your first playthrough. It lets you experience its story by having you solve multiple murders and puzzles, but mainly murders as you walk or run through the absolutely stunning Red Creek Valley. Considering how believable the location is and my cursed compulsion to seek out every corner, I would've hated this game with a passion if I hadn't had the option to sprint and I mean properly sprint not just walk faster, which some games seem to mix up. Sprinting would've destroyed Dear Esther, but here it's unavoidable, especially with the risk of backtracking.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter looks so good you wish you had the PC to be able to max it out, at least in my case, cos with the use of photogrammetry it literally looks picture perfect. You would gladly walk, admire your surroundings and forget the gameplay, but there is no need to go exploring every nook and cranny. There are only a couple of items off the beaten path; this is no game of collectibles. The words Inspect and Read hover over every item worth looking at. To avoid backtracking though you need to pay attention, cos every puzzle needs to be solved in order to finish the game.

I can't say what the story is about without spoiling it, but you'll notice right away that this isn't a detective story rooted in reality. It's a nice mix between Dear Esther and Alan Wake. Often times I was enjoying the sights and the simple gameplay of putting murder scenes together that I didn't bother putting the actual story together, cos you're so used to a paranormal angle that it's become normal, which is why I was caught off guard by the games ending. Having only played the Redux version, which has a better save system though higher system requirements and the risks of backtracking aside, the gorgeous game world, its Lovecraftian tone and a good story make it a worthy experience.

EDIT:

A tip from grandsong: If you're not interested in walking, in keybindings change Run to W, so you can rest that pinky finger of yours.

Dirt cheap, short and sweet, point & click puzzle game with hidden objects. The beautiful art style reminded me of a childrens book, but I can't find it. The music is relaxing and the puzzles are not too challenging, so it's a good way to unwind for a couple of hours, if moving the insect doesn't annoy you too much.
