tl;dr, It's hot garbage now due to the expansion and accompanying free update.

Yes, there are tonnes of bugs and so many of them make so many of the survivors damn near unplayable but more importantly there is, from my understanding, a code merge between the console and PC version, bringing down the quality of the game immensely and making modding a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ nightmare. On top of that again these changes apply to the base game regardless if you have the expansion or not.

The game was amazing. I loved it, put hundreds of hours into it (Steam hours are actually a bit low due to launching the game with the mod launcher). Now the game is ♥♥♥♥♥♥ beyond all recognition thanks to Gearbox and the original devs for selling it off for a quick buck. The only real way IMO to fix this absolute mess of a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game is to completely revert the code merge and remake the expansion on the old code. Reconsider *all* of the items and survivors that were added. Leave the maps and music, they're great. I don't care if it takes an entire extra year or 2.

Perhaps more important than that though is the devs of this expansion showing that they do not understand the game whatsoever. The additions to the game that this expansion gives is a massive mixed bag but mostly negative. The new survivors are bland as hell. The only one that is reasonable is the Seeker, but even she is really weak. The other two are just pretty unfun to play.

The new items are pretty garbage too. There's next to 0 synergy between the new items and any of the old items whatsoever. All they do is add bloat. Some of them are insanely overpowered too, sonorous echoes especially.

The only truly positive aspects of the expac are the soundtrack (Made by the same composer of course, bless you Chris Christodoulou, your music is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ amazing) and the new stages. The new stages are fantastic, i have nearly no complaints about them at all, they did a good job with them.

I only have a few hours in it so far but it's an amazing followup to one of the greatest RTS's of all time.

Nearly every aspect of the original game has been brought forward and in some cases improved upon. I have nearly no complaints, everything looks beautiful graphics wise as well

There are some things that aren't great, however, but they're not game breaking or enough for me to care that much. The player (and some of the research) portraits are AI-generated and therefore generic and ugly. In this case honestly they should have just used the same ones from the original game. The UI overall feels like a downgrade from the original, which is a bit strange.

Like, you need to select a fleet and then hit *ctrl+tab* to make your fleet warp in formation, as opposed to the original where it was just a button you cycle through. Who thought THAT change was a good idea?

I'm also not a huge fan of the strategic resources they implemented. I get it's there to limit your speed in teching up and building caps and whatnot, but it's not fun being gated so hard by those and being forced to build resource manufactures.

Overall though those are pretty much my only complaints. I can see myself putting just as many hours into this as the original, and the roadmap looks fantastic as well for future DLC and expansions.

Let's get the controversial part out of the way first:

I liked Wuk Lamat. She was a well-written character that, admittedly, did take up a lot of the story. She has a massive amount of lines (compared to other characters) but she's fun enough to be with that that's not that big of a problem. For the love of Christ though please play in JP voices, it's better overall and for whatever reason the EN VA for Wuk is petty awful. Honestly, if you're playing JRPGs you should be playing with the JP VAs anyway. I'm personally convinced that most people that hate her only play with English voices.

For the rest:

The story is pretty good overall. I think it ended somewhat weakly. No spoilers, but it felt like there could be more to it, but I suppose that's what the patches are for.

The rest of the story was fun though, it felt like a good journey from beginning to end. It was fun learning about the different cultures and zones of the new area. Going through it with Wuk along the way did add to that as well. It felt like a journey of growth. It was much less impactful than Endwalker but that's by design - in Endwalker it was the cumulation of a decade long storyline, this is something completely new. One thing they could improve on is more variety in quests though, much of it is fetch and go talk to this character. Honestly though, the people that complain about the story and its structure probably should just not play JRPGs. XIV is just that at its core - a JRPG. It just also happens to be an MMO.

The new zones are wonderful, with the exception of the very last one. It's great to start with, but it very quickly loses its luster, which is a damn shame. The new cities, especially Solution 9, are pretty good too. Solution 9 alone steals the show, but again, it's missing a few small things that would really take it to the next level. There's no inn there, there's plenty of little things that just aren't there (novelty vendors, etc.) that would really make the city feel more alive and fun. I don't really like comparing XIV to WoW, but this is a good example, in Stormwind (or any other major city) in WoW there are plenty of little vendors that aren't connected to anything major, they don't sell your next set of gear, they just have random garbage, maybe food, toys, whatever. They're there for world building. XIV could learn from this, especially with how big of an RP community XIV has.

The jobs (new and changes to old) is a mixed bag. I personally only play 3 jobs (DNC, SGE and GNB) and i'm satisfied with how all 3 of them work in this expac, I think there could have been more added but overall it's not bad. I've heard less good things from other classes, especially summoner, but I can't personally say much about it. Again, I hate comparing to WoW, but having more variety and customization in jobs (e.g. talents) would go a long way to making them more interesting to play. On the other hand, the new gear sets so far look great.

The new dungeons are a lot of fun, they did a great job with them. Not a lot to say about them really, but the last 3 (minus the post MSQ ones) were really the best of the expac.

I'll probably add more to this as i think of it (and when the raids come), but for the most part this is a solid expac. If you like the previous expacs you'll enjoy this.

Edited review: Snoy reneged on the requirement to force us to create PSN accounts, so that's good.

Otherwise, there's still the garbage DRM that they force on us, but otherwise, the game is amazing. At its core it's a lot of fun. There's various smaller issues like balancing, making some of the more fun guns useless to use because they're woefully underpowerd but overall those issues are small compared to how fun the game is.

As long as Snoy doesn't stick their awful nose into the game anymore this will always be a recommend from me. Get rid of the DRM and the game would be nearly perfect.

It's much better than it was at launch. Gonna be honest, it still has a lot of content that needs to be added, but it's base is very good.

Incest, cannibalism and the biggest and best "I can fix her" character I've ever seen in a video game.

10/10 i cannot WAIT until the game is finished.

In all seriousness though, the game is great. Very engrossing story, fantastic characters and clever and fun writing. Very much looking forward to more.

The game, overall, WAS fine. The devs unfortunately have been slowly killing it and the most recent update is the final knife in its back.

The devs are now going back and censoring a plethora of art, sprites and sounds/voices in the name of sensitivity and updated values. What this actually means is getting rid of fun things; sexy things and interesting character developments, ya know, what the game was actually known for. Do not give money to people like this; do not buy this game. I only wish that I could still request a refund for it.

Really great game, the guns all feel fantastic and there's a great selection of them to choose from. The art is great and the levels are fun and interesting without being too long. The difficulty is just right as well. Fantastic game for the price, well recommended for anyone that likes boomer shooters and/or anime aesthetic.

Still very early access, but it's already a lot of fun. The gunplay feels good, the weapons are varied and fun. Looking forward to future updates, but even now the price is worth it.
