Assassin's Creed Odyssey is a good game, make no mistake, but only for a while. The main reason I have chosen to not recommend this game is because this game already has a much better replacement that you can get for cheaper: Origins.

Odyssey's gameplay functions almost identically like Origins', and to give it credit, there are a few nifty additions to the gameplay, but it's almost always the same thing over and over again. Combat and stealth are the only two ways to solve anything, and the puzzles are far easier than in Origins. This, unfortunately, gets old in a few hours.

The story too is nothing to write home about. It could have been an emotional story of loss and reconciliation, but... the discount Ezio main character can't really sell it that well. I found that I barely liked anyone in this game (Darius being the main exception).

Here's the thing; I get that Ubisoft wants to push Assassin's Creed towards the "complete missions in whatever way you want" route, but this is not the way to do it. The way they've implemented their ideas here are far too limited in scope.

It's a bit hard to explain, so I'll give examples.

Say, the mission is that Person A needs to die. Now, what Ubisoft does is simply tell you where they are, and the infiltration method is up to you. But in the end, it's ALWAYS like that -- which makes the gameplay boring.

What they should do is say, "Person A needs to die", and then give us nothing else. We should have the freedom to gather information the way we want (i.e. tailing guards, interrogating someone, planting a spy, etc.), then we should be able to influence the world in the way that we want to take down our target (i.e. stealing nation chests or burning supplies to bring the target out in the open). And each method should have it's own consequences.

I know that this is possible because all the gameplay elements are already there. However, they are sorely underutilized. There are barely a few missions which take advantage of the game system the way I suggested.

And also, combat should be harder. For all its flaws, Unity got the combat difficulty right. Combat is too easy here, which makes stealth virtually useless. We should be considering our options based on practicality, not whim in a game like this.

Anyway, the game is simply too big, which makes it hard to put in full effort in everything like Origins. Still, don't misunderstand, had Origins not existed, this would be a pretty decent way to pass the time.
