you haven't felt real pure human emotions until a thief takes all your gold in an ambush and a mimic breaks your gear in the same turn, while bandit king inflates the economy to the moon and a weapon for your class hasn't dropped in the last 20 encounters

Not worth the 8 hours I spent on it, however if you're a fan of its (very obvious) influences and artstyle, you might still enjoy it a lot.

While it periodically provides some decent platforming bits during the Void sections, Blue Fire's barebones story, clunky combat and, often times, confusing level layout leave a lot to be desired. There are occasional moments of brilliance here (Stoneheart City is a BEAUTIFUL place, especially to just mess around jumping and dashing), but they are very few and far between.

Much of the combat in the game is super super basic, being able to cheese most (if not all) enemies by dashing on top of them and repeatedly slashing them, and I fail to see the reasoning behind adding so many weapons when all they do is add just a little bit more damage, when they could have instead made it so different weapons had different effects (such as some ice blades making enemies slower on hit, for example). Many of the sidequest are simply going from point A to point B to point C, and the lack of a map really shows here, as many many times I was left running around aimlessly (especially at the start) not knowing where to go at any moment. This unfortunately lead to me sequence breaking the game many many times using collision in the scenery and getting around nooks and crannys in walls, reaching ledges I shouldn't be able to or making my way to places I really should not be at. My biggest example of this was quite early in the game, entering Temple of Gardens from Stoneheart City I obviously could not cross the ledge to progress, but since the game's forte is in its platforming, I assumed that I was supposed to make my way around it, across the walls and drop down to an area below, which left me walking around aimlessly for a good while before I realised I was not supposed to be there.

However, as you play through it you can FEEL the potential this game had, and I believe that with just some polishing up here and there, the devs have an excellent, excellent 3D platformer and metroidvania fusion on their hands by their next title.
