The section size of a piece of timber needed to do a particular job in a wall or floor frame
depends on:
 the loads it is expected to carry (both dead and live loads)
 the strength of the timber (shown by its stress grade)
 whether it is simply or continuously supported
 the span of the member
 its maximum spacing from other similar members
 whether it is seasoned or unseasoned.
Each of these parameters is covered in the simplified charts for AS1684.

AS1684-2006 National Timber Framing Code is adopted in full by the Building Code of Australia and can be used to design residential structures to the full measure of the loads they will need to withstand. Part 1 of the standard is used by structural engineers as it explains the engineering science behind the provisions in the standard. Part 2 is for non-cyclonic regions (as in most of NSW). Part 3 is for cyclonic areas and Part 4 is a simplified version of Part 2 which contains charts that can be used for member selection in wind classification areas N1 and N2. The simplified charts suitable for most domestic construction but any unusual designs or exceptional circumstances would need to be designed by a structural engineer using the principles set out in Part 1 of the standard.
