Upgrade, I suppose you can in very minor terms. Like storage, I did swap out the harddrive on my old OG Xbox for instance. And did buy my old Wii modded and chipped from the store. There are some fun to be had with consoles, like Nintendo opts into couch-play and makes the player more active. But in performance.. PC will always be #1, no matter. So as long as they also keeps exclusive titles away and open for all systems, that's for the better for everyone.

They needed to get the money from somewhere, and if they can't raise prices accordingly, it's being done hidden and shady instead.

Because, as you said no one would buy them then. So instead of games being $200 a pop, they added in-game MTX, so people CAN pay $200 of they want, after they're hooked. More hidden $200, after you've paid $70. And also it doesn't limit it to $200, it's infinite money.
