Great game - so much better than stinky old Valheim

Oh The Sims 4, how I longed to leave a review of this before. But oh what a surprise, you can't leave reviews on the EA/Origin app. I wonder why that is.

After what seems like 100 years of them pushing this unfinished and unwanted piece of trash on us, the game is still riddled with bugs, poorly optimized, badly coded, and devoid of basic features. I would not recommend this game on my worst enemy.

In Sims 4, there is a severe lack of gameplay and they stripped out half the features of the Sims 3 base game. Which in itself was a great game, lacking only in technical performance aspects and a severely aggressive micro-transaction model, and a few minor gameplay features from the previous Sims games before it. Then we arrive to Sims 4, with no more open world, now you are limited to EAs poor selection of cookie-cutter worlds devoid of life and fun places to go. You can only add a handful of buildings and 4 or 5 houses in an entire city. And then when you go to a location, random people spawn but the game can't handle more than a few, so you end up on large empty lots with nobody around.

It makes no sense that a 2011 game of Skyrim which has been released on ever platform imaginable can spawn hundreds of NPCs with routines into a city and they can go about their day but EA can't manage to program a game years later that runs with a simple variable to track how much someone has to go pee pee? It is pure ineptitude and incompetence on the part of EA and their developers, or complete and brazen leadership that has no vision and no concern for the fans or the game genre.

Generally, when you buy the base version of a game, and they come out with a sequel, they integrate some or most of the previous game DLC into the new one - not EA. They charge you for every single feature all over again in the form of expansion packs and stuff packs. And half of the expansion packs lack concepts and items that were in that same expansion pack for the previous game. Though EA remains committed to pushing packs out their a**, it's clear they have no intention of fixing the obvious problems in this game, and have not learned a single lesson from the obvious failures of this game to put towards Sims 5 going forward.

You may see that my playtime increases in this game and question that against this review. This is because it is simply the only iteration available for this genre for which to scratch a certain gaming itch. The Sims 1 and 2, while great games, and Sims 3 as well, are plagued with issues on modern hardware. Sims 4 is the only version that works to some degree. There are some mods you can install to add some gameplay features, but the game never holds your attention for long. I find myself creating people and buildings and then getting ready to play, playing for a while, and getting bored and not playing for months. Then when I come back, all my work is gone due to game updates or the s*** EA/Origin launcher that I have to redo making all my Sims again, and repeat ad nauseam.

On the horizon, are finally a bunch of competitors to this game. I anticipate that just like Cities Skylines killed EA's SimCity, and how Planet Coaster killed EA'S Roller Coaster Tycoon, the same will happen to the Sims with one of these new games that will wipe this off the face of the earth due to EA's lack of attention to fans outcries, and malicious monetization of the franchise, and failure to innovate or provide any care for gamers or respect for the series as a whole. Will Wright would be horribly disappointed to see what has become of his creation under EA.

What a strange and quirky little game. I purchased this a while ago because of the positive reviews and it is so weirdly fun I really enjoyed playing it along with my friends watching the crazy story.

It seems that everything is sort of randomly generated, which does cause some weird things to happen, but if made a funny little story where we were all fighting arsonists and then rescuing my cousin who was as old as a grandma.

There's not a lot of handholding which is my only complaint. Lots of these games want you to "see what happens" and so far that has worked well and been entertaining (we are playing on the lowest difficulty) but I have an infestation which I have no idea how to clear and seemingly no explanation as to what I need to do to clear it, it is "locked until I finish other objectives" but it doesn't tell me what that objective is.

I am excited to play more in the future. Such a cute and funny game.

It doesnt even WORK! Years of playing this game and they force you to use a piece of crap launcher now that DOES NOT WORK! Game just sits on loading.

The entire game is TRASH anyway, trying to play online is an act of futility as the game cant even manage to give you a list of your online games with your friends! You have to rely on steam notifications and remember a 6 digit code or else you will never be able to get into your game. And half the time even the steam notification doesn't work meaning you are locked out unless you remember the stupid code!

I think the developers at Fireaxis are imbeciles and couldn't code their way out of a paper bag because they have created such a poorly coded piece of crap they should be ashamed if they actually knew anything about game development.

UPDATE: 2-star. I hate this game. They are supposedly trying to fix it but they are working at the pace of snails and the game is still trash after all this time. They didn't learn or improve on anything from the first game. The graphics aren't even that much better, so I'm not sure what they even worked on.

Performance is garbage, the maps suck and if there is the slightest hill the limited assets look horrible. The road placing is dated, and the zoning lot system could have easily been redone into something innovative like many other games have. You can't even place a street without the game constantly renaming everything attached to it and you have to make sure every road ends with an unrealistic piece on the end otherwise it will turn everything into one long winding road. It's basically been a year and we still don't have custom assets so people can add some variety to this lifeless cookie-cutter 5 assets the game comes with.

Adding mods is a necessity, and for some reason they got rid of Steam Workshop integration and their modding platform sucks. Can't search things easily, prepare to wade through dozens of non-related items for any search and its buggy and glitchy. The game has to restart every time you add a freaking mod. And it takes forever to startup and load and then forces you to wait while it does who the hell knows what with the mods before you can do anything.

After over a year the map editor is still in "beta" and is impossible to use, no wonder you don't find many custom maps - and the default selection in this game is horrible. Creating custom maps is downright impossible as when you add water it floods the entire world and the controls dont work or the editor will just crash. You can't even build roads or highways you have to then load your map in and edit it in game if you want even basic road layout options.

What an absolute waste of time and money. If there was a masterclass on disappointment, these developers would be teaching it.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

1-star. For now. Everything lacks polish, is broken, glithchy or just plain bad. Cities Scamlines is more like it for the moment. I just gave this another try and realized I can't even measure my cities out. There's no grid while laying out a singular road, instead they give you "yard" measurements. That's useless!

I should have listened. Steam reviews are negative but sometimes there's still some redeeming parts. Not in this case. The game crashed on the very first cutscene. And I had to recreate my superstar from scratch.

The graphics actually seem way worse than in the past. Everytime a controller prompt should show up, the game freezes. The EA launcher wanted a lot of aggressive privileges to run constantly in the background of my computer... for what reason!?

The music selection was obnoxiously bad, and apparently "new" to this game (which always means, 10 versions ago they removed it and now they brought it back) is this stupid "mini-game" garbage that has horrible descriptions of what you're supposed to do, has massive lag that makes it impossible to complete, and then if you fail, they DO give you a chance to RETRY but it takes forever to reload so why bother. I just accepted a horrible score at the combine so I could be done with this miserable minigames.

I live in Buffalo and have to support my Bills and Josh Allen, but nobody else should have to suffer with this game. Someone should bring criminal charges against EA for these shady and anti-consumer business practices. They released a broken game over and over again.

I did not like it at all. I found it very boring, and the graphics were not good. I usually dont care about graphics, but for being a modern game, it just looked so weird and nothing like the highly edited and bloomed screenshots that are attached to the game page.

The combat was bad, like the dodging mechanic lets you dodge but then the camera stays facing in the direction you dodged while your enemy is behind you, so you have to frantically whip the camera around to be able to reorient yourself which usually means you end up taking damage and you should have just saved the effort and not dodged in the first place.

The voice acting was boring monotone and utterly too slow. The NPCs take forever to read their lines and there are no dialogue options to reply, just simple "Yes" or "I'll say no now, which will end the dialogue, but will have to just talk and go through the same dialogue and say Yes later"

The very first skill has you dance around like a ballerina in this serious-toned game. It makes no sense at all. Also upon first logging in you cannot even chat for 72+ hours which I can understand why they did it, but there's certainly got to be other ways to combat bots and gold sellers than making it impossible for new players to ask for help or get questions answered.

There are NO controller prompts, controller input is handled by steam only, and by default it is HORRIBLE for this game, you will have to take the time to customize it because by default for example, there is no mapping for the most basic of commands. I forget if it was jump or dodge but once of these extremely basic commands wasn't even mapped to a button by default!

Overall I did not like the game and will be trying to refund it. I tried it during the summer sale but this will not be my summer game.

Ok, I'll admit it. I was wrong. Totally wrong. Steam, you can stop shaming me that I've played "xx more hours" since I left my review. I tried this again since it was literally $3 and someone recommended it. I took the time to go through the tutorial, along with looking up a couple Youtube videos about what to do. I'm hooked. It's a great game. Take more of my money, Paradox.

That said, my initial review IS somewhat true for a first impression. You really do have to go into it realizing that you have no clue what to do and the interface is completely unhelpful as a new user. It will be boring if you play on the slowest speed, and you have to in the beginning to get an understanding of what is going on. Once it clicks though, this game is addicting and so fun and immersive.

This game is Civilization V + Crusader Kings 3 + The Sims + a space setting. You have the limited empire management features of Civilization, plus the random events from Crusader Kings. You will be sending ships out to explore and better your empire, and the game will randomly send you events that you have to reply to. Meanwhile, you have a variety of Sims under your command Scientists, Envoys, etc. that you grow and level up, and send on their own adventures and thus oversee their sometimes wild lives.

There's strategy grabbing all the nearby choke points so you can protect your empire, there's collection with trying to gather all the nearby resources to better your empire, discovery in learning new worlds, social aspects in meeting new aliens and managing your relationships, colony management in overseeing immigration of aliens, and emigration to alien worlds, and customization in building up your empire and dictating its social policies. It's a very fully-featured and deep game.

If I could fault anything with this game, its that there are SO many DLC, and it totals up to almost $200 (on sale). That's kind of ridiculous. But the nice thing is that none of them are too essential. Once you play a couple games, you can buy just the DLC that fit the systems you like and ignore the rest. But I do wonder, as this is quite an old game, I really hope that jumping to the game late doesn't come back to bite me with a "Stellaris 2" or announcement that they are ending support of the game soon.

In conclusion, I am really enjoying the game, and definitely recommend it. A certain friend of mine is also wildly obsessed with it now too. And I love the fact that you can play with each other in Multiplayer and I'm really looking forward to that too once I understand the game more. Definitely recommended, changing my original review:

There was a free weekend but I barely had a chance to play. It would have taken 2 days just to go through all the tutorials that vaguely tell you where to go so you have to hunt and peck your way around a CUMBERSOME UI or requires you to already know where everything is so its useless.

The game seemed intriguing but also very boring. I just ready a damning review by Boromir and I have the full picture of the game now. It's currently on sale for below $10 and I dont know if its worth it.

LOL This game is complete garbage and why I will NEVER invest in live service game. They are running a free weekend and you cant even log in to try the game! Even in the "single player" mode it is demanding a live connection to the internet, when it tries to connect you get:

> Steam Online services are unresponsive

That's a joke! I guarantee its not steams fault, and every other game under the sun works fine. It's this trash game and its trash servers. Not interested in even trying to play it anymore. NEXT

Ignore the drama. This game is amazing. But performance on PC is really poor. Nobody has a clear answer as to what or how, or any one particular fix so I would not recommend it on PC unless you can live with massive slowdowns for no real reason.

If you like Harry Potter you will love the game, if you are a gamer and love action combat you will love this game.
