Early review - I've played for 4 hours at the time. I don't get the hate. Overall it is enjoyable but lacking polish. I really enjoy the game so far. I would assume a patch is on the way. If not, then yeah, I'd join the bandwagon, but for a game that just launched you have to expect there to be technical problems.

Comparisons I will make:
- Dragon's Dogma. The animations are a little janky, the character animations are awkward, and the battle system is trying something new and sometimes shows a lack of polish but flashes of brilliance, but always a lot of fun
- Final Fantasy XV. They definitely took a lot of things from the combat of this game, and some of the fleeting moments in combat.
- Assassin's Creed Valhalla/Odyssey. The open world concept, even some of the music effects, really take some inspiration from these games.

Overall this is an enjoyable game with a giant open world to explore, some fun new concepts and experiences to encounter, a deep lore and a brand new world and legends. When you look at the publisher/developer you hold it to a higher standard. That said, Final Fantasy XV was one of the worst (technologically) games I have ever played on PC, and then Squareenix completely abandoned it in a broken state, so that can't be saying much.

People complaining about tech issues on day 1 should be ignored. Turn the game off of "borderless window" mode which you'll find with a 2 second google search, and if you still can't run it, get a better PC or turn down the settings because your rig can't handle it. People complaining about dialogue are also in the same boat. I think the dialogue is entertaining (and if you hate the frequency you can turn it off) and is realistically how a modern era person transported to a magical fantasy realm would talk and act by using humor and sarcasm to cope with the absurdity of what just happened and not being able to believe it.

I will update this review after playing more, and hopefully after beating the game.

This game is amazing! After 8+ hours with the game, I'm completely enthralled to see what happens nerxt. It's not going to be for everyone, though. It is a visual novel style game, which I had no idea when I first downloaded it. I knew there was a tactical grid-based battle system and I just assumed it would be a traditional RPG surrounding that, Instead its got a visual novel surrounding that which is really unique and different but in a good way it somehow works. There are choices along the way and an affinity system that dictates the direction of the story and how characters react to you. This may be common to the visual novel genre, but having never played one, I wasn't sure if branching stories and characters are a standard thing.

The story, to avoid any spoilers, is very standard Digimon in the beginning. A bunch of kids end up in the digital world after a series of mysterious events. Then they meet their Digimon and begin to realize they aren't in their homeworld any more and then all the traditional Digimon weirdness starts to happen (pieces of other dimensions showing up, etc). Only, this game doesn't seem to be "digital" but some sort of world that predates Digimon. I'm sure the world will reveal itself more later but as of now there are no digivices, no real digital intervention other than the kids receiving weird encoded text messages, and no reference to the word Digimon or Digivolution at all. The story is unique and familiar. The characters are interesting and all unique to this game so far, however they follow similar archetypes to some of the classic characters from the show (the nerdy guy, the brooding guy, the studious guy, the beautiful girl, etc.) But they aren't straight rips in any way which would have turned me off if they had done so.

It is literally like watching the anime. Most everything is fully voiced - of note that you HAVE to have Japanese voices and English subtitles, no English dub - and the graphics are BEAUTIFUL. It's truly like watching a top-tier anime with portraits that move and blink, animations, 3D set pieces mixed with anime backgrounds. The game is truly beautiful and looks just like you are watching the show. In fact, my only complaint with the game so far is that with all the visual production that was spent on this game, it is shocking that the awesome and classic Digi-volution scenes from the anime, with the bright colors and streams of DNA, awesome pumping music, panning on the new character, etc. is completely absent and not only that, made very ho-hum and not exciting where that should be a very important and celebrated event. Instead, the Digi-volution plays some sleepy piano music while your static Digimon sprite moves into a bright light and then moves out of the light as the a static sprite of its Digivolution. No streams of color, no cool music, no animations, nothing. It's completely shocking to me. I can understand that people would not want to watch them over and over (not me, but probably most normal people), but I would think they would have made them more "special". Even if there was the same variety of camera angles used for every Digimon, I wish they had done more for that sequence.

Battles are not too challenging and so far are easy to master. You have a deck stacked in your favor and you can also adjust the difficulty down two steps from Normal if you are facing a challenge. In so doing, you receive a handicap for less damage, and the enemies receive a handycap for more damage. On the lowest difficulty all my Digimon earned one hit KOs while it would have taken an NPC 4-5 hits to defeat one of my Digimon, and you are allowed 6 of them to start with, and the largest enemy party I've seen was 2. In addition to handicaps, you also have the option to talk to opposing Digimon, and upon success you can instantly remove it from the field which would be another way to cull numbers in facing a lot of foes. So suffice it to say, Normal mode is not super challenging, but exactly what I had hoped for as someone who does not generally like Tactical Battle Systems like Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics. I just came here for the story, man.

Overall, I'm really happy and pleasantly surprised by this game. When they announced it I was stoked, being a huge fan of Digimon, but when I saw tactical battle system I scratched my head and resolved it wasn't going to be for me. Upon learning it was completely not what I thought it was, I was prompted to try it, and to write this review for people who are also on the fence or who are big Digimon fans and not sure if they'd like the game.

Its oozing with charm and really brings me back to those times I first watched Digimon Adventures way back in the day. It's like experiencing it anew for the first time but with a completely different lovable cast and in a video game format where I can make some direction to the story. What more could you ask for the Digimon anniversary?

Okay I like the game so far, it has some cool new features to the old games, and as usual the story is compelling and the characters likeable.

I'm on the first case, but what I really don't like is that in the first case, while the other games weren't always steeped in realism, it at least remained grounded. In the first case we have people lying on the stand, and proven incorrect, which should have their testimony discarded but they just ignore it. Then even more shockingly, a "witness" takes a piece of evidence and destroys it in while on the stand and basically says, "HAHAHA now you will never know cause I destroyed it" which should be an obvious sentence of guilt, but they just ignore that too.

I hope this gets better or I will be changing my recommendation of this game.

To reiterate what everyone has said: The graphics are great, the story is intriguing, the music is stunning, the characters are cute and likeable, the setting is interesting, the the charm is unmistakable, even for an older game.

But this isn't a movie, its a game. And as it game it completely and utterly fails. If it was easy enough to the point that it was a "walking sim" that would be fine, but they are marketing this as a JRPG game and it is a catastrophe.

The combat and gameplay is awful. Absolutely dreadful. It is hard, unforgiving, clunky, unintuitive, and bad. It is like they took a standard '80s JRPG but then actively thought "how can we make this even worse?" They threw in having to massively grind to be able to even keep up with the story because you go right from point A to point B, even fighting anything that comes in your way along the way, and you will be severely under leveled and have to go back and grind again. Restoratives are impossible to find and you will use up any that you have in the opening area of the game, and then find you can't afford anything so that you can support the endless grind. The battle system is clunky with wide hit boxes for you, and tiny narrow windows for foes. The controls are haphazard and might as well have been presented in greek. You never feel in control, so you're constantly getting chunked for damage while you wrestle with the controls to try and do what you want. You move at a snails pace and enemies close in with speed half of that.

I gave this game a heartful try attempting to see what others found "fun" about it. I really like the story, I'd rather disable all combat and watch the story, but that isn't an option. Instead its almost like they crafted a great story as a reward for slugging your way through this horrible game. If the powers at be hadn't designed the graphics for this game it would be sitting on a shelf at a 2.0. But, because of the graphics studio behind it, it unjustly sits at a 7.0-8.0. I would not recommend this game.

Unlike MV that seemed to have a little development roadmap behind it (editor updates, dark mode, multi-platform export) that were all released after launch, MZ does come with those aforementioned features but otherwise is completely stagnant as far as no major improvements, and only a few occasional bug fixes. And its essentially the exact same editor as MV. No major new revolutionary improvements or features, no fixes for existing cumbersome features, or any real quality of life improvements, still some major bugs that are left unresolved, just the same editor repackaged and shipped off.

But mostly this engine has dissolved into a grotesque platform for them to ship DLC. They've been toting the same product for years but they know the majority of us are not graphic artists and stick with the defaults. Now they are deliberately limiting that selection so that we will have to buy DLC. And then, they don't even give us a big package where they could bundle and we could save money, instead they force you to buy characters 2 or 3 at a time in dinky little micro-transactions. Every week there are new DLC just like clockwork. Pay $10 for 2 little characters. It'd disgusting and what has turned me off this editor completely. And the fact that these all seem to be readily available is even worse when you consider that the MZ default "RTP" and the same for MZ are basically empty. So they can't put any development into the product but they can pay to have artists spend time creating color swaps of existing character templates all day. It's really sad.

Overall, if you want to make a game and have great ideas, this engine will probably let you do ~70% of it. I would recommend it compared to other engines out there. But as for the other 30% you will be stuck fighting to do it in some cumbersome way, or just convince yourself it isn't really important enough and abandon. As far as this iteration of the engine, its the exact same as "MV" but MV is cheaper, so go with that. And even "VX" is about the same.

They are now toting a new editor which looks gorgeous but I assume will have the same lackluster support and limitations and so I will not be promoting it. "You can put lipstick on a pig," as they say. I have been supporting this software since XP before it was even available in English but its sad to see that they have lost their way and abandoned their philosophy of allowing people without programming knowledge to easily make games. It has devolved into "make your game which looks and sounds and functions exactly like everyone elses' unless you are a graphic designer, composer, or programmer, or pay out the as for DLC." Which in that case, if you were, you wouldn't be using RPG Maker to begin with.

It hits different because it's fun again! 2k20 may have been the wake-up call they needed. 2k18 and 19 were almost the same, and they tried to release the same tired formula again in 2k20 and fans revolted. The game was just not good. So they took 2k21 off and released 2k22 to critical success, in my opinion.

The presentation is very good, camera angles, weighty attacks, proper lighting and good graphics. A lot of care went into making things in general look great. Yes, there's still some clipping, and weird hair physics. But its kept to a minimum and not super distracting.

The new "combo" system is great. When one says "combo" you think of Mortal Kombat and this is nothing like that but more like a better system of choosing your basic attacks than previous games where you had X or X and direction stick. Overall, matches feel fresh and you never feel like you're totally "out" of a match because you can reverse a lot more things and a lot more frequently.

I always come to these games for the story mode and create-a-character modes. I like remaking myself and my enemies so I can rein down fire upon them. The editor is much the same as years past but it seems like the selection has been toned down a bit. There's still crazy off-the-wall items I would never use personally but there's more than enough variety I feel to make whoever you want. If anything I would only complain that hairstyles are limited, and they have kept the strange system where certain items can only be equipped when other items are not (example some undershirt cannot be covered by a certain jacket for whatever reason). Added to that this year are some items which can only be equipped when you are serving as a manager, or while doing your entrance. This is slightly off-putting but not a major detriment to the game.

I have 16 hours into the game and that is exclusively between creating characters and starting my journey in myRise (story) mode. I feel like this is worth the investment. The story mode isn't revolutionary. But at least they tried. They've put some choices you can choose to do certain arcs or skip them completely, and you can make good or bad choices to develop into a face or heel depending on your character.

Once I've tried other modes, I'll update this more.

Now the bad:
- Face import still uses the same clunky system as before
- Entrances are SEVERELY cut back. I don't think there's any pyrotechnics or fireworks at all, let alone there is no way to customize them. Instead you have to select a superstar motion template which also dictates what you do when you emerge onto the ramp, walk down it, and enter the ring. No more 3-piece adjustment, which really sucks. That said, I understand why they did it... they revamped every single entrance to make it cleaner and cohesive. No more weird camera angle cuts to hide the jump between animations, everything is fluid and looks really nice, but still, I was a fan of the old way because I could really customize my character. I miss being able to time my entrance, although I didn't need the overkill of being able to perfectly lay out every single camera angle and firework. I wish they had spent more time on this and come up with a middle ground for players.
- There seems to be some sort of Madden-like Ultimate Team mode. I haven't tried it, but its a bit off-putting. I know some players love this, but I would hate to see this be the start of WWE 2k going down the road of microtransactioning the game to death and leaving all the other modes untouched every year like Madden.
- AI is a little bonkers, it seems like some characters are spammy, and others are stupid. In tag matches, your partner will never jump over the referee to break up a tag so you always have to knock the entire opposing team out yourself or they will break up the pin. When using items characters always seem to have a 6th sense and stand up immediately, and some moves seem like they never ever hit, they are just always reversed (mounted punching for example). Most likely, these will be addressed in a patch.
- Some players report a lot of crashing at the moment. I haven't really had any issues. I can replicate a consistent crash any time I ALT+TAB out of the game and let it minimize itself. Other than that, the game hasn't crashed once. Though it has lagged on some load screens for a while that made me thought it was going to.
- Last big negative is loading. Its somehow worse this year. There's a visible lag between choosing any part or item in creative mode. This makes no sense when installed on a SSD, why would it take so long? There's loading screens to transition between basic scenes in story mode. I do like that there are no loading screens between entrances and matches anymore. But I'd like to see removal of some of the others as well. Especially when it makes creation mode so cumbersome.

Overall, if you are a fan of the games, or the WWE this is the one to get. It is a natural evolution of 2k18 (my personal favorite) and 2k19 and is a night and day improvement when compared to 2k20. It's the de-facto wrestling game to get and there is a lot of value here. While there are some glitches, they will likely be ironed out in the next few patches. I give it 4/5 stars.

Bad first impression. Logged in, went to character creator, found that characters are gender locked (in 2022, really? You really can't make a male mage?) Watched a few class videos, all the classes looked boring and generic, but I wanted to try the gameplay so I picked a male martial artist. Went to customize the character, changed a few options, hit a button for "advanced customization" and lost connection to the server and the game shut down.

I'll be promptly deleting this game off my drive. Thanks.

Will certainly update with more detail after getting further in. DEFINITELY recommend to fans and newcomers alike.

For NEW Tales of fans:
- The game is easy to pickup and play. The story is not tied to any game in the series and this is a completely new world with brand new characters and lore.
- Battles are easy to participate in, hard to master. If you have played action games in the past, this sort of combat focuses on dodging at specific times and then wailing on your target while your party provides support. However, you can also switch to your party characters and experience completely different gameplay (mages, gunmen, etc.) The main character is your normal sword and shield guy.

For existing Tales Of fans:
- The whole battle system was changed up, and while it seems to retain a lot of the good stuff, its a bit to get used to.
- Controls are great, but quite different from past Tales games if you are an existing fan. Having a bit of difficulty adjusting. You CAN remap all the buttons but I'm trying to muscle train and play as intended. The no blocking thing is really getting me, you can only dodge not block.
- I don't like that we only have 3 artes available at once now. Granted you have 6 because there is a set of 3 for on the ground and in the air.

Interesting but not for me. Seemed very clunky and I wasn't in control of the character during combat. It's great that there's lots of voice acting but some of the grunts and groans people make sound really sexual and odd. Also, I didn't like that I essentially only had 2 skills to pound away between as a Mage.

OK YES I LIKE IT BUT WHY IS THE TRANSLATION SO BAD!?

My opinion growing up has always been Digimon is way cooler than Pokemon. This game further proves it. The game puts you into a story-driven adventure whereby along the way you collect and train Digimon. No generic "become the world's best trainer and collect them all, here's a pokemon, pat you on the back, and go on your way" this game instead thrusts you into an actual story which is interesting different.

Along the way you collect and train Digimon, and focus on Digivolving and De-Digivolving them to min/max attributes and put together the perfect team. If you are a fan of Digimon, you might not know the names of the baby forms, so another interesting sub game emerges where you are shown a silhouette of what a Digimon can turn into and you can try and guess to get your favorites. Combat takes turn much like Pokemon with turn-based combat, but the similarities end there. Instead of 1v1 all the time, the game can put you against 1-3 enemies, and your team can consist of 1-3 active Digimon as well. There is a turn order gauge and combat relies on extorting the gauge to get the most hits in. The only thing I will say negative about combat is that there are a ton of types and elements to worry about and no visual cues to help you along the way. You'll suddenly find you are doing half damage and then discover you don't have the right "type" to help you.

The story is interesting, the characters are kind of interesting which leads me into my one big gripe. The translation is ATROCIOUS. Like so bad you can have no idea what is going on. A major event just occurred in game, avoiding spoilers, but someone was abusing a Digimon, and due to the translation I was sucked right out of the game. The characters were spouting gibberish and switching up from super sad to super happy from one message box to the next. It made no sense at all. Then everyone just dispersed like nothing had happened and one of the characters was flirting with me? It made no sense. And it has happened a few times. At times you won't even know if the game is hinting at something or if its an error with the translation. And then the character will say something off the wall and you'll be even more confused.

Within dialogue, you will find untranslated Japanese words. Sometimes the game seems to even realize this and says something like "that means, xxx" but this doesn't help at all. Why not just replace the word to begin with? There's also a problem as in any Japanese game where the characters still have Japanese names making it hard to remember and decipher who is who and who they are talking about at time. Kumiko, Kurama, Kuragano. These are all great Japanese names, but if you aren't Japanese, they seem to blend together making it hard to know what they're blabbering about.

Overall I wish Steam had a middle of the road button. The GAMEPLAY here is amazing, so much better than any Pokemon game I've played before, the story is also really good, but the dialogue is just so out there due to translation issues, I don't know if I'd recommend it.
