First of all, I must say I'm not one to write reviews often... Or at all for that matter... With this game however, it would feel criminal for me not to. I have sunk so many hours in a week that it feel compelled to.

First, this is a very story driven game. So I am happy to report that it is very well fleshed out. It is compelling, you want to know what will happen next and keep playing. When I failed (ie died), the thing that frustrated me the most was that I had to try again to make the story go forward and wait for more developments on that front. The characters come to life in this story. I would also like to add that the developers added a "God Mode" option in the settings that makes it easier if you just want to progress on the story or don't feel like grinding for some reason.

As for the gameplay, it is quite good. From a strictly objective standpoint while writing this review, it would be easy for me to say it is repetitive, but it did not feel repetitive while playing. The RNG mechanics make every playthrough different in a slight variation. There are also different weapons that you can chose from that changes the game's dynamic without altering the core mechanics. It enhances replayability. The same goes for the "Pact of punishement" where you can more obstacles to your runs.

Finally, the area that is probably done the best: the design. Graphically, it is simple, yet effective. The drawn aesthetic makes for a very colorful environment, but none of it feels over-saturated like a TV on display at a Best Buy. Every color has its place and makes this game look beautiful. Next, the audio is second to none. The first Supergiant game I played was Bastion, a game whose name was often associated with its fantastic soundtrack. The same goes for here. (If you are an audiophile, I highly recommend purchasing the soundtrack. It comes with the FLACs.) The sound effects are great. The narration, something that could have entirely been skipped on without taking away from the game's core attributes, puts this onto another playing field entirely. All and all, this makes for a very immersive package.

My only regret is to not have discovered this game sooner. The trophy case of "Game of the Year" awards is entirely deserved.

If you liked the previous Tropicos, you'll love this one. The new bridge and island system is good, though I am still slightly frustrated with the road building tool.
