Shortly after the sun lit the lake, a rustle came from behind the shrubbery. John had been gone for five minutes, so Bill and I assumed he was just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

That’s when we heard the sound.

I looked at Bill, wondering what kind of animal could make such a noise. Another sound this time; the unmistakable scream of true primal fear. I crashed through thick foliage behind Bill, asking myself why we ever came out to Cedar Pines; the area was known for being thick with bears and cougars. Weighing these things against the bountiful fish and natural beauty in the place was something we could’ve afforded to put more time into, but it was too late now.

John’s shrieks picked up as we leapt over broken branches and fallen leaves. It was coming from a clearing; just beyond the oldest pines in the forest. It ceased as we passed into what must’ve been miles of open land. What stood before us froze the very blood in my veins.

The thing standing over John’s lifeless body was no bear. It was no cougar. It was no person. It wore a cheek-to-cheek white smile matching the shade of the rest of its body and stood as tall as my eight year old son. Some sort of vibrant skeleton, almost cartoonish in appearance. And, though it couldn’t have been human, it was unmistakably wearing a blue hoodie.

My last memory is the sound; that bumbling mumble it uttered as my blood ran cold.

And that’s why you don’t see me fishin no more🎣
