Good retro shooter

I thought it was like anime Doom when I first got it, and it's that and a little more.

If you've played GZDoom with Brutal Doom, it reminds me of that.

Preface: I have played 20 hours at the time of writing and am currently only a little bit into the Grand Campaign of Rome, about 50-70 turns in.

Never played any Total War games before this one, but had a little Civ experience. Rome II from what I read is one of the more complicated titles in the series, but it really isn't hard to learn if you have any 4E game experience. However, there is a somewhat convoluted political system in the game that has to do with the Roman families and their allegiance to the current emperor/consul/tribune/dictator.

This game is overall amazing if you're a fan of Roman history and you want a 4E game that covers both the battlefield tactical decisions and the overall strategic theatre. The combat in particular at the ground level is A+, with combat being satisfying and not as comically short as it is in later titles.

So far, so good TW.

Early Access Review
pretty good

- Allows you to spend hours away just designing engines and cars.
- A nice selection of workshop mods
- can't really speak for campaign as I haven't played it much.

4/5

Very steep learning curve if you're new to RTS games or aren't fluent int them. This game is less micro intensive than some other games, but still requires some micro and combined knowledge of every unit/nation in the game to be a good player.

Graphics are a bit dated but still look pretty nice, nothing eye-popping but nothing overly hideous.

Playerbase in warchat qualifies for a game within a game.

UI is very user friendly, but there is no tutorial like the earlier Wargame titles. I recommend buying European Escalation for a in-depth tutorial and actual campaign.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this game if you're someone who likes both RTS games and Cold-War era militaria.
