This game is riddled with terrible game design choices, and remains in an unfinished state despite being in development for over 10 years.

I have gone back and forth on whether I recommend this game or not, and after having thoroughly explored everything the game has to offer, I can safely say it is not worth getting.

It is a puzzling case.
Some parts of this game (such as its building system) are absolutely phenomenal and impressive, while other aspects feel like they have been given no intelligent thought whatsoever. Here's a couple examples of the latter:

• Imagine you're thirsty, right? Your survival instincts dictate that you gather water from a lake and boil it to make it safe to drink, or something to that effect. Well guess what? That's not an option anymore in this game. They REMOVED it. To get water, you must either venture into several zombie infested buildings to scrounge up toilet water or craft "dew collectors". From a standpoint of survival common sense, this doesn't make any sense at all

• Do you want to progress in an intuitive and fluid way? Well too bad, They removed that too. Literally the only way to progress in the game as of alpha 21 is to find reading materials scattered throughout the world. Locking your game's main progression system behind random chance in such a rigid way feels completely suffocating sometimes. The player can do everything right, and simply just not find the right books to progress due to bad luck.

A shameless predatory cash grab and a sad hollow shell of its former self; A complete downgrade from its predecessor, and a disappointment. Overwatch 2 not only destroyed and paved over a perfectly good game, but replaced it with a financially exploitative digital cesspit which serves little purpose other than to satiate Blizzard's endless greed.

review as of 12/11/2020:
Unstable, unfinished, lacking-in-depth, odd/conflicting controls, & tons of performance issues.
All of this can be yours for the low price of just $59.99 USD! (Unless you're disabled or epileptic....)

This review will remain negative until CDPR deals with the substantial number of launch issues their game has. It is completely unacceptable that a game which has been hyped for this long has launched with fewer features than some games from 2005.

review update for 10/03/2022:
While CDPR has somewhat remedied many of the launch issues ( such as the lack of post-creation character customization ), there are still far-too-many glaring and unacceptable flaws and oversights within this long-hyped game. - The review remains negative.

Very fun and addictive game, Not recommended for those with anger management issues.
I have a few gripes about it:

• Some items literally take real-life days worth of grinding to obtain if you have bad luck.

• Fishing is far too boring to warrant having so many useful items locked behind it.

• Many of the game's bosses become exponentially harder to kill as their health nears 0.
This makes getting killed when the boss is at ~5% hp a far more-likely occurrence.

To me, this feels like a case of bad game design. I feel like it's definitely achievable to make a boss difficult without having a high probability of the player getting frustrated and punching their desk.

But that's just my opinion, take it with a grain of salt.
Maybe I should stay away from master mode.

It's Skyrim, except there isn't any workshop support.

I've played this game since 2009 across several different accounts. It holds a special place in my heart and likely always will.

It's a wonderful game for those who love to design and create; but its insane security flaws & its immature, toxic, racist, sexist, anti-lgbtq playerbase are repulsive enough to drive off even long-time fans such as myself.

[...here be dragons]

If you're unconvinced & still want to get this game, I have a few extra words of warning for you:

• 1 - Don't hang around anybody or anywhere if they're even-remotely-sketchy.
> If you get involved with the wrong people, you might anger the online wannabe-mafia.
> The dangers of this are hard to overstate.

• 2 - Back up your game's data folder regularly.
> Malicious players are able to delete months or even years worth of your saved creations.
> Backups are the only surefire way to prevent this.

• 3 - Do your best not to give out any information about yourself, Not even small stuff.

• 4 - Minimize all personal information stored within the garrysmod directory.
> Malicious players can extract data from almost ANY file in this directory, so keeping personal information in your gmod folder is just giving them ammunition to blackmail you with.
Yeah, this includes the garrysmod/screenshots folder.

• 5 - For the love of god, use a VPN. If you don't protect your IP, some nasty stuff may happen.
> You may be subject to DDoS attacks & be rendered unable to access your internet.
> Someone can figure out vaguely where you live using your IP & use other available information to pinpoint your street address, employer, or loved ones. A determined person may ruin your entire life.

• 6 - To give you a few extra examples of just how dangerous this game can be...

> I've seen malicious players use weaponized scripts to suspend people from steam or render them unable to play for weeks or even months.

> If you join the wrong server, someone could secretly upload illegal content to your computer & use the methods outlined in point 5 to alert your local authorities and frame you. This can theoretically lead to a prison sentence of over 20 years.

> Certain addons may contain a "backdoor" which gives their creator(s) basic control of your game even if you're not on their server. I've seen people use these to force others to join their server remotely, but it's possible to do far-worse things using a backdoor.
