I've barely played the original, but because this game functions similar if not better from what I'm trying out so far after noticing I had a "free" game in my library and because this is a developer that wanted to break the cardinal rule of companies choosing to nickel and dime their fans out of apparent "financial necessity," I've felt it is obligatory to return the favor by leaving a review based on that in addition to the fact that the game is also a good play. Heck, previous owners even technically got a "thank you rebate" to have been gifted this game since there are still collectible steam cards given for time played - albeit for only a few cents of profit if sold on the steam market.
Either way, props goes out to the developer for better ethics when it comes to remastering existing games, making a functional working game that is both fun and newly polished again, and for even the level of additional generosity to folks that own the original by even including the steam cards for trading and selling.
I plan on trying this out on my Steamdeck as well and appreciate the game and developer more during my long flights this year to and from Brazil.

Great game, and, I thoroughly enjoyed taking as many missions against the Capellan Confederation as possible with my friends on co-op.

Great emulation, despite having to adjust it's graphics after recently replaying my saved games.

To those complaining about experiencing BAD optimization and poor emulation: you are completely right in terms of the default settings (maybe more, if this personal fix of mine isn't as universal as I hope). When I recently restarted the emulator to play Shining Force 2, right off the bat I noticed a severe slowdown. Confused and frustrated, I went through the comments and ratings of recent times and came ot the conclusion there was an update or something that ruined it post adding the new 3D menu thing. If you go into the option to start games in the psuedo bedroom VR menu and lower the overscan and/or any other settings that may be hampering your experiece, you will be able to play the game in both original Genesis Classics emulator mode and the new one without the new issues. Trust me, it used to have better default settings and after changing some things in the new menu (I couldn't find overscan options in the simple menu) I got it to work much better.

Yes, I shouldn't have to do all that just to run a distributed editor, but it's still worth its weight and hopefully people will see this review and still get the product due to it's relative ease and use and mods (even after whatever update screwed with default optimization). Shame on the developers for that demerit, regardless of how much I still enjoy the product.

Great game, mostly I've played it outside of / before Steam. It got me into The Elder Scrolls, and although I've many disagreements with some titles outside this one, it's all a great series to into regardless of which installment starts your path into the graphics, gameplay, and lore. Especially strong with this one are the mods and modability compared to others along with large amounts of detail in text and in maps. Give it a go!
