one year.
it has taken me more than a year to figure out why i've been not having fun on tf2 anymore. or at the very least, been having less fun as i've been playing tf2 more and more.
and all it took was some youtube video, released yesterday. (2/14/2025)

let's get the obvious point out of the way, meet your match was unnecessary and basically spoiled how tf2 was supposed to be played. you hop on casual, pray you don't get stomped, and then leave and requeue again. it's a cyclic process that every tf2 player goes through. and oh boy, does it get unfun pretty fast.
don't get me wrong, tf2 has some of the most enjoyable mechanics i've ever experienced. the things people can do with all of the classes are things that shouldn't be undermined, it's a thing that can inspire others to try to do the same thing. pyro is by far one of my favorite classes i've ever played, landing that reflected rocket or hitting that guaranteed crit flare still gives me an immeasurable amount of joy. rocket jumping was something i've poured hundreds of hours into the moment i picked up tf2 seriously. i have dedicated so much time to stock demoman, stock sniper, huntsman sniper, pyro, and now i've just reached 1000 kills on my direct hit. i have even tried out some other classes and had some fun with those. i've spent so much money to get all of the flashy unusuals, stranges, and even some aussies i have today. tf2 as a game is so unique, and in my eyes, nothing can match how tf2 executes and implements its uniqueness and mechanics. but there's so, so many negatives that dampen the highs you get out of playing tf2.
maybe i have some underlying mental issues, sure. but none of us are denying that casual goes from fun to some boring repetitive process, a chore, a monotonous task. have fun even getting into a casual server when you're playing during not-peak hours. and once you get in, it's like a coin-flip on whether you're on the team that stomps or gets stomped. oh yeah, did i mention that you have a chance to get queued up into a server that has 100ms ping, which makes you requeue because of how inconvenient playing with a 0.1s delay actually is?
of course, not every casual game is like this. i've had some fun in games where i've had a chance at just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ around and being able to ♥♥♥♥ around, seeing what happens when i do ♥♥♥♥ around.
or more importantly, being able to improve at the things i have fun doing.
tf2 is a game i want to be good at, but i need to have a chance to actually improve in order to, well... improve.
the fact that out of the nearly 5 years i've spent playing tf2 on and off, the bot crisis was only resolved 8 months ago? this was an issue that plagued tf2 longer than i've actually been playing the game. the bot crisis made casual hell to even try and queue on, you spend half an hour trying to queue into a server that isn't infested with bots.
and tf2 was like this for more than 5 years?
5 years is a pretty long time, so much can happen during that period of time.
during those 5 years, i've picked up computer science. i've discovered that i was a furry. i've changed what animal i was from shark, to cat, to dog. i have been through countless friend groups. i have went from being a boy to being a girl. i have changed so many things about myself, and i'm still changing things about myself to accurately reflect who i actually am during those 5 years.
yet, during that entire time frame, tf2 still had bots infesting casual servers? it is a crazy thing to think about now.

you're telling me, valve had a system where you could join servers instantly by clicking on 2 buttons, and those servers could be curated to how you wanted to play the game. those servers had maps you could vote on, teams that scrambled everyone for the fairest match-ups possible, and you could play uninterrupted. you could leave at any time, and join a new one if things got stale. none of the inconveniences in casual nowadays would exist in quickplay. and as someone who has never even seen quickplay, let alone tried it, i think this system sounds way better than whatever casual is right now.
they scrapped all of that... for a mode that has shown its flaws since day one of its implementation? for a mode that doesn't fit with tf2's design philosophy, and how tf2 plays out compared to games like csgo / cs2? for something that has been negatively received during 11 stress tests? this mode has been in here for over 8 years? why? the fact that i'm just learning about this now is disheartening.

the game itself has been constantly shooting itself in the foot. have you seen any of the new cosmetics since winter 2019? they're pretty horrible, that's all i'm gonna say about that.

the fix isn't as simple as bringing back quickplay, although that is definitely a requirement in my eyes. valve needs to care about tf2 again, put some heart and soul into it, respect how the game was supposed to be designed before meet your match.

dark truth is, this isn't going to happen. we're going to continue giving our money to whatever slop comes next. we're just going to go back to queueing up for casual, no changes at all to tf2, until it eventually dies out.
