Surprisingly fun for a semi-idle game that you can beat in under an hour even without playing optimally.

There really isn't much of a story here and there really isn't any particular strategy needed to win, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing if you just want a little break from everything else.

Does have a lot of things I like, but...

I absolutely hate certain aspects of the game.

Forced camera positions and shifting cameras, so if you are running around trying to gather mobs, you end up having to change directions repeatedly.
Somewhat random feeling cutscenes (no warning marker) where mobs chasing you can still move (and will often just disappear because the cutscenes take so long that they return to their original locations).
Timers still run while cutscenes happen. Not sure if this is intentional or not.
No way to skip cutscenes that I've seen so far, only fast-forward. Sound effects can't be skipped, so if there is a long sound effect, even with fast-forward, you have to wait for it to finish playing.
While it is a neat effect (that mostly stops happening past the tutorial with one exception), the conversation pop-ups disable the rest of your UI while it happens. There is one of these that can reoccur every time you pass a specific type of shop under specific conditions and covers up almost half your screen.

Really annoying when you finish an objective early, which means you have to reset the map in order to do the objective. (ie. get 5 chain, but you already did a 5 chain and killed all the enemies on the map).

If you play in JP audio mode, make sure you know a reasonable amount of JP. It isn't often, but specific cutscenes are not subtitled.

Be warned that button spam (Not necessarily the same thing as button mashing) is a thing here. Instead of an option to hold down a button to fire multiple bullets, you have to click every single shot. On the other hand, you do have 'hold to fire' attacks in the game and 'charge up' attacks where you hold then release to fire, so it isn't as if it wasn't possible to have a hold option (There is one thing I haven't unlocked yet that might change that). No option to semi-reassign similar buttons. (For example, if it is a RT, you can't assign it as a LT without doing a button remap. Some games would allow this. (RT would be the 'slot', but you'd be able to reassign RT slot to trigger on LT press without a complete remap of the buttons).

There is a lot happening on the screen during battle, so you can get pretty overwhelmed with the characters dashing around as you use skills.

There appears to be an option for clothing loadouts, but you don't unlock it before the quests that require you to wear specific clothing.

There are also minor things like asset flips where if a non-key character is facing the other direction, instead of editing the image, it is just flipped. So text is backwards in one scene. Or things on one side of a character are suddenly on the other side.

Now, I do love some of the stylistic stuff. It is just that the way they are implemented is in a way that bothers me. I feel like they could have streamlined things quite a bit.

So far, I'd say that the new 'combat' mechanics are probably what I dislike the most. They feel kind of unpolished in comparison.

Graphics and music will be by taste, but from what I can tell, the original graphics are gone completely with no way to switch over. The new graphics, I don't necessarily like because it looks just slightly off to me. The new music isn't necessarily bad, but definitely different.

The game is very... cyclic. You basically go through a very specific cycle now: Increase pop to unlock next quest. Do quests to unlock the next lair. Enter the lair for a timed platformer run. Do a Tower Defense that is honestly not that as fun as I wish it was. Repeat until you finish the town. Enter boss fight, go to next town.

From what I've seen of the original game, you had slightly more options there.

So many bugs and issues. (Note: Some might be controller specific).

Bugs include:
I watched an enemy (that I needed to kill) walk through a cliff and off the map. Save and reload time.
Doors that just refuse to open, open too late, or are otherwise having issue detecting the player.
Bad NPC pathing (might be related to above two items). (In a restricted area, I managed to glitch out an enemy into being neutral by pathing them out of their bounds, which caused them to switch to neutral).
Did a boss just walk through a wall and out of the boss room?
Did a chest just spawn... under the ground where I can't collect it?

Issues include:
Horrible controls on controller that you can't adjust freely (specifically, annoying for flight).
Cosmetics are done per item with player based set, so each time you obtain upgraded gear, you have to redo the cosmetics. Not a big issue once you hit level 40, but you switch items frequently in the early levels.
Related to cosmetics, there isn't really much information as to when you unlock a new cosmetic unless you know you don't already have that cosmetic when you identify/pick up.
There is smart casting for a specific set of spells where it will automatically upgrade your spell, but it feels really random when it happens.
There is no cast sets* (There are cast sets, but they are your quick sets. What I mean is like: Cast set for when you are in a certain area where it makes no sense to have other skills set. You can change to a separate set when you enter, then change when you leave, but there is no option to have a 'special area' set.)
Related, it is really easy to accidentally use a potion when trying to mount the broom.
Why is the ghost solid? In one situation, one of the ghosts has collision.
In a few situations, really bad forced camera angles.
Really wish toggle/hold was per spell for a specific reason: One of the spells makes perfect sense to want to toggle it (light, for example) while others, you want fast release (object pull) in some cases.

The difficulty feels so random. The slime was honestly one of the hardest bosses so far-even harder than enemies that come later-because of how the attacks work and your stats when you might first encounter it.

Durability is extra annoying in this game for a few reasons:
- If you buy a new weapon, the current weapon still exists.
- It is mostly better to just buy a new weapon so that when your current one breaks, you can switch. (In terms of cost effectiveness)
- Once broken, the current weapon seems to cost the same to repair as to make a new one, so unless you have upgrades...
- Some items seem to be unable to be repaired?
- If you sell the current weapon, the weapon still exists in the shop and doesn't seem to disappear (30 days later, my broken axes are still there).
- Some items deplete extremely quickly.

The game is extremely buggy, especially on the steam deck where name input is bugged, so you have to do extra work to change your name. Some spots cause you to teleport for no apparent reason, hitboxes are annoying when you watch your attacks go through the enemy (not a miss or dodged or blocked, just doesn't seem to hit at all)-especially annoying at lower bow levels where you already get a lot of misses, dodge, and blocked (the arrows also pass through on misses and dodged). Crops are a pain because they are sometimes randomly unable to be placed-sometimes going into and out of the menu will make them work again, sometimes you have to leave and re-enter the area, sometimes you need to move around to a different angle.

Not very clear on what to do. I get that you are expected to learn, but what is the sprinkler range? How can you tell when there is no real indicator to tell you that a crop is watered? You find out by losing the crop due to not being watered.
Looks like you can lock yourself out of quests. One can be locked out of if you aren't prepared ahead of time (ie. have already looked up the solution or restarted), have bad luck (glitches), or otherwise cause the quest to fail, potentially before you even receive the quest. (There are supposed to be fixes for it, but in some situations, including in the case of a glitch, you could still potentially lock yourself).

I hate the lighting options. You basically get to use a temporary light that you need to farm to craft or buy, a placed object (that requires string to craft), a hat that slightly extends your vision range, and an off-hand light that slightly extends your range. The hat means you can't use other hats. The off-hand light means you can't use a shield or a bow or any other two-handed weapon. Fortunately, the shields aren't that useful anyway once you get the iron sword and find iron to upgrade and then repair it with.

It isn't clear what items drop on destroy and what items are destroyed on destroy.

Where is the save button? Does the game do continuous save? Does it only save when you quit the game (the only time the game tells you it will save)? Again, not very clear.

Inventory management is horrific with no craft from nearby chest options and no chest labeling. Combine this with key items not being consumed when they are no longer needed, items that probably have no use, but are rare enough that you don't want to risk it, and other such items and your inventory gets cluttered with keys and other items that have no more use.

The game feels incomplete with some items seeming to do nothing beyond being sellable items despite some potentially having very valid usage. (Seeds that can't be placed even though it would make sense, for example).

Given how long it has been and how some of these issues have likely already been reported, I doubt we'll see any updates.

Endless mode crashes very frequently and does not save your score if that happens (there is an achievement that requires a high score).

Several bugs in the game involving cards or on the steam deck/controller. There are things you can do on a controller that don't seem possible on a mouse and keyboard and vice versa, so the gameplay is very different.

For example: You can direct banish from a controller, but for mouse and keyboard, you need to place the card into the sacrifice slot first. For mouse and keyboard, you have easy access to certain menus that don't seem easy to access on a controller. (Will need to check if it is possible at all).

The game speed is very slow even with the 3x speed fast forward. Game really needs a 12x, especially once you have a good setup.

Runs poorly in a few senses:
Random camera control loss if you use mouse to move the camera (the camera will randomly shoot to a corner).
Makes an autosave before and after each objective. Does not appear to delete any of these automatically so you either have to delete them manually or a lot of save files.
Some objectives are just... ugh.
Long wait after each cutscene. Cutscene after each objective.
Controls are not that great.
Very limited options menu.

Can't say I enjoyed this much. I'd only play this for the story before playing Blue Reflection Second Light.

The world is very interesting and enough so to want to know more about it.

Story is... Weaker than I expected. Those who get to the ending might realize another reason why the story can be frustrating. There are some oddities that are explained at the end of the story.
Art and character design is beautiful as usual, though they seem to have gone all out with the shininess to the point that some of their clothing looks very much like a doll or plastic models.
The music is nice, but fairly calm and peaceful; even the battle songs are on the calmer side of things.
Gameplay isn't fun compared to most GUST games. Very slow movement and it feels slow. Menus open slowly, lots of delays in animations, and plenty of unskippable cutscenes even in NG+ (some can be skipped and you can fast forward text in NG+ (called skip, it only fast forwards text, not animations/cutscenes)). Some gameplay elements are poorly explained.
One of the worst NG+ I've seen. You lose everything except the database (even fragments); you get text skip and a few early mechanics are supposed to be there (Can't tell which ones are supposed to be there, but you lose a lot that would be nice to have at the start). You still can't skip unskippable cutscenes.

The translation is horrible. Plenty of typos, line breaks mid-word, names translated in multiple ways (one character's name is translated two different ways, for example). Plenty of skills are very confusing due to the translation.

(Note: A lot of issues are fixed in Second Light, but it does not appear that they will be updating the first game with those fixes.)

While we know that the dual account system is horrible, the base game is actually quite well done.

The game plays beautifully compared to many recent ports and releases, even having options that work well on weaker hardware. The story can feel a bit forced and awkward at times, but you can also see it as the protagonist making difficult, life-changing decisions as he fights against himself in deciding what is important.

The game is beautiful visually and audibly and looks decent even on lower settings.

As for the big negative of needing a PSN account (there are workarounds to this that I won't talk about here) in order to play online, I can somewhat understand it. It is a Sony game and they likely have some influence on that requirement. I suspect that part of the reason for PSN is cross-play, currently in beta (testing) from what I understand, but they have not given us a clear reason last I checked (they might not be allowed to).

No neutral option, so going with not recommend. The difficulty spikes aren't necessarily the problem, the annoyance is when you have bullets approximately the same color as collectibles, making it hard to tell if you are receiving loot or if a bullet is coming after you.

Some of the challenges can be frustrating simply due to how large the area is with hidden spawns and almost forced weapon changes (Especially frustrating if you are running a deck that revolves around mana recovery and weapons). Certain puzzles can be very frustrating because they feel very random with what will work (I've definitely had to solve a few puzzles in a likely unintended manner).

Lots of pointless backtracking because there is no teleport to beacon. You do get a teleport from beacon later in the game, but it has very limited use outside of leaving an area faster. There is no dash option. You can spam the dodge button for faster movement, but there is no hold down dodge to move faster.
