The aardvark, named for "earth pig" in South African, resembles a pig but shares ancestry with elephants and golden moles. Found in sub-Saharan Africa, aardvarks are solitary, nocturnal mammals with a lifespan of around 23 years in captivity. They rely on strong claws for rapid digging, consuming termites and ants with their long tongues. Active at night, aardvarks possess poor vision but excel in hearing and smelling. They birth one offspring at a time, nurturing them in burrows until maturity at about a year. Aardvarks defend themselves by digging holes and using their claws. Human threats include habitat disruption and pesticides affecting their food supply.
