Ho, illustrious passers-by!
It is indeed unlikely that you could condescend to stop and listen to the foolish words of such an insignificant and altogether deformed person as myself.

Rain may fall and wind may blow,
And many miles be still to go,
But under a tall tree I will lie,
And let the clouds go sailing by.

"If all truths are equal, then I have no reason to exchange beliefs with you. But, come and let us speak of these things, for they interest me greatly."
-Thai monk to a Portuguese missionary, 19th century

"I would rather die having spoken in my manner, than speak in your manner and live. For neither in war nor yet in law ought any man use every way of escaping death. For often in battle there is no doubt that if a man will throw away his arms, and fall on his knees before his pursuers, he may escape death, if a man is willing to say or do anything. The difficulty, my friends, is not in avoiding death, but in avoiding unrighteousness; for that runs deeper than death."
"The hour of departure has arrived, and we go our ways — I to die and you to live. Which is the better, only God knows."
-Socrates

“Haven't you ever observed how we live in an age of self-persecution? What a lot of things there are one might do that one doesn't - and yet why, God only knows. Work has become so tremendously important to-day, because so many have none, I suppose, that it kills everything else... Work, work, work . . . an abominable obsession - and always under the illusion it will be different later. And it never is different. Queer, isn't it, that anyone should do that with his life?”
-Erich Maria Remarque

"I am not saying that everything I did was right, but everything I did was for an honorable purpose. I had to do some nasty things, locking fellows up without trial. Close the coffin, then decide. Then you assess me. I may still do something foolish before the lid is closed on me."
"Even if I am on my death bed, even if you are lowering me into the ground, if I feel something is wrong, I will get up."
-Lee Kuan Yew, age 91 and first Prime Minister of Singapore
3/22/15 RIP Lee Kuan Yew, my contemporary hero :c

"If my soldiers began to think, not one would remain in the ranks."
-Frederick II/Frederick the Great, King of Prussia

"Insulting expressions are used in verbal quarrels; they have no real meaning in high level affairs and are apt to cause disasters. Even when we apply such expressions to nearby small countries, such as Siam, Annam, and Japan, they are bound to be resented, because regardless of their low stations, human beings are not willing to be considered inferior; even if they admit their inferiority, they do so out of compulsion, not out of wholehearted submission. If wholehearted submission is to be won, it must be won not by power but by the perfection of government within and the perfection of faith without, for that is the only way."
- Hong Rengan to Hong Xiuquan
Various Things and Stuff.
"Truth becomes fiction when the fiction's true;
Real becomes not-real where the unreal's real."
-Cao Xueqin

"I am surprised that the King of France, my good friend, preoccupies himself in a matter which concerns God, in which God himself seems to take no interest. Because does it not depend on divine providence, giving us a body and a soul of the same nature, to give us also the same feelings and the same inclinations for the religion that pleases him most, and so to cause us all to be born in the same religion? Since God has not wished this, and on the contrary has permitted to be established in the world over all time an infinity of different religions, should we not believe that his infinite wisdom takes pleasure in having himself honored by so many ceremonies in different ways, as we saw he wished to be glorified by all the creatures in the world, each one of which praises him in his own manner?"

- Phra Narai to Constantine Phaulkon, on the subject of constantly being pressured to convert from Buddhism to Christianity

Chairman's Tomb and Emperor's Palace (1978)
Chairman's tomb and emperor's palace
face eachother across the square
One great leader, in his wisdom,
made our countless futures bare.
Each and every marble staircase
covers heaps of bones beneath;
From the eaves of such fine buildings,
red blood drips on those who sleep.

Upon being berated by the Sultan for not procuring wood for the fires of his harem (which he learned of after one of his favorite women complained; the harem had been his only worry as of late) Kara Mustafa replied to Sultan Ibrahim: "My Padishah, was it necessary to make me, as your representative, suspend a sitting of the Divan and thus neglect affairs of importance for the sake of five hundred carts of fire wood, and not the condition of the state, the subjects, the treasury, the frontiers?" When the Grand Mufti, head of the judicial system, interrupted and said that if the Sultan complains that it is clearly more important than anything else at that time, Kara Mustafa continued: "Surely it is a service to him that I should tell him the truth? Must I flatter him? I would rather die an honest man than live and not speak the truth to those who need to hear it!"

Recollections of a Dream

"In life, everything has a payback.
The rags I'm wearing are payback for the furs and silks I once had.
The straw that I sleep on is a payback for the soft beds.
The smoke in my eyes and the dung in my nostrils; payback for all of the voluptuous fragrances of the past.
This sack on my shoulder, a payback for all those who used to carry me.
For every kind of sin, there is a kind of retribution.
I am nearly 60 years old this year of of 1645 [year in which the Ming fell], my country is shattered; and I have lost everything. Looking back, it was as if all my years were just a dream." -Zhang Dai
