A game that's way better than how hardcore Devil May Cry fans whine about it, and is genuinely fun, but ultimately kind of disappointing.

The combat is fun. The basic flow of hold right/left trigger to use different weapons, then use the d-pad to switch between these weapons is surprisingly entertaining. The enemies that can only be attacked while using specific weapons are annoying, but it's only in the later difficulties that they pop up to the point where it kind of sucks and breaks up the flow of combat. The music is also a standout. While nothing I'd listen to in my own free time, it fits the mood of the game perfectly, and gets you appropriately hyped up for the many fights the game has to offer.

But really the disappointing thing is the story. You should never play a DMC game for the story, but the general setup of Dante and Vergil teaming up to fight an evil fox news host and an evil demonic banker who wants to control the world through poverty has a lot of promise. This is ultimately squandered because both Dante and Vergil are completely boring. Dante's only real character development is he falls for the graffiti artist love interest. Vergil basically never does anything but hack some computers and shoot a pregnant woman through the stomach with a high powered rifle. By the end of the game I was honestly felt more for the evil demonic banker whose wife and child were killed by our protagonists, than our actual protagonists.

Another disappointment is the setting. The game immediately sets out giving you this whole human world/demon world thing that feels like They Live, where all the billboards display capitalist propaganda, and the surroundings shift and warp into these twisted views of what's actually around Dante. This seems awesome. In reality, this is really only used in the first level, and throughout 70% of the game you're basically just going through sewers or nondescript "hell" areas that just look like big caves with rocks floating around. To be fair you do go through an evil office building, an evil dance club, and very briefly an evil fox news broadcast, but these are all underutilized and extremely short.

Going further, the whole feel of DMC is ruined. There's basically like 5 bosses in the whole game, where most DMC levels typically end with a big boss fight. The bosses themselves are usually pretty fun, but you can count them on one hand, and most are extremely gimmicky. Most DMC cutscenes also typically feature extremely stupid, but entertaining, choreography where our protagonists are surfing on missiles, flamenco dancing through demonic attacks, and generally doing extremely goofy but entertaining stunts. In this game, there's basically one example of this, where a nude Dante gets dressed in one motion while the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ camper RV he lives in is being flipped around while random items keep getting in the way of seeing his dong. Aside from this, Dante basically just walks around and talks in the cutscenes.

Taken as a complete reboot of Devil May Cry and considered completely apart from the other games in the series, it's really not that bad. The story is disappointing, the use of the initially clever setting sucks, but the combat is really fun. Based solely on this I still recommend the game. Who knows, maybe if Ninja Theory got to do another sequel they could've ironed out the issues over everything around the combat. It's just not really a good Devil May Cry game, though not just because they changed Dante and Vergil like people loved to whine about when the game first released.

Oh, also the platforming absolutely sucks, and the fact that they cram it into every level, even basing special "challenge arenas" around it, is terrible.

A short horror game that does a lot with a little, and the less you hear about it further, the better.

Way better than a game based on a second-tier comic franchise deserves to be.
