1) Introduction

Welcome to my profile!
I'm a 20-year-old Computer Science Engineer student currently living in Hungary. I'm from a mixed family, and apart from Hungarian, I can also speak Croatian natively. I've learned English in an autodidactic way; nearly all of my knowledge comes from games and literature. I'm always open to improvement, so if you find some inconsistency in any of my reviews, please let me know!

Video games have been part of my life since birth; one of my oldest memories is of me sitting at a computer and turning it on when I was about one year old. Literature has also been really important to me ever since I learned how to read.
Aside from these, I'm interested in every form of art, whether it is music, movies, paintings, and so on.
I consider myself an exceptionally open person, and while I have some preferred genres, I like to experiment with many different things.

I'm also an avid learner; aside from my three main languages, I also study German and Japanese, but in the future I plan to learn all Slavic languages and some more exotic ones as well. Currently, I'm also vastly interested in geography and history, mathematics and physics, and of course informatics.

In the future, I plan to work as a video game developer. I've made a few smaller indie games in the past, but in reality, these were only prototypes. I'm currently studying 3D modeling and level design in my free time.

2) About Reviewing

I started writing reviews in 2019, first in Hungarian. From nearly every single aspect, these weren't really great reviews—the formatting was awful, the content was short; however, I decided that I would leave every single one of them up to see my improvement throughout the years.
My first English review was posted on May 25, 2022, and ever since then I have only written in this language.

My main goal with my reviews is to get the player interested in the title; I'm not fond of long reviews since I don't intend to replace an actual experience with my words. I try to review every single game that I complete; however, this hobby greatly depends on my mood and time.

Aside from game reviews, I try to write a few thoughts about every book I read and also about a few movies I liked; however, my knowledge of the latter is vastly limited.
I also had a blog where I reviewed music albums; it lasted for a complete day before I got bored.

Genre setter in the making

The Exit 8 is an insanely clever take on the popular ‘anomaly-spotter’ genre. Set in a seemingly static, liminal space-esque environment, the premise of the game makes it seem like a ride in the park, but in order to get to the final exit, you will have to muster all your patience.
While the (literal) gameplay loop isn’t anything revolutionary, the final package is a really enjoyable title, thanks to its aesthetics and unnerving atmosphere.
Should your experience be maximised, I advise you to go into The Exit 8 completely blindly, with the understanding that this is more of a puzzle game than a horror title.

In-Depth Review

About the genre

Anomaly spotter games have been around for a couple of years now, and they are now more popular than ever, mostly thanks to content creators. The premise is overly simple: you are tasked with observing a number of cameras scattered around different locations, and if you notice anything weird / out of place (e.g., an anomaly), report it immediately.

The Exit 8 puts a great spin on this genre by making it more interactable: instead of just idly sitting and watching, you are the one who has to go inside all of the rooms and decide if an anomaly persists there or not.
If you discover one, turn back at once; if not, continue your walk towards the 8th exit.

Spotting the anomalies

Now, spotting these anomalies is actually easier said than done. Their difficulties range from being ‘blatantly obvious’ to almost ‘unnoticable’. Since discovering these is part of the game, I do not want to spoil your experience.
However, I must warn you: if you wish to get the most out of this title, go in completely unprepared, without using any guides.

While it might be tempting to just sprint through the entirety of the game, I highly advise you to just take things slowly and observe everything to its fullest. Some of the anomalies are time-based, meaning if you want to see all of them in one playthrough, you need to take your time on certain levels. Failing is also part of the process, but I suppose it is possible to beat the game on the first try as well.

Self-doubt is the key

There is one particular element of the game that has gone unnoticed in most people's reviews:self doubt. Since you have no information regarding the types of possible anomalies, as you progress through the levels, you will slowly gaslight yourself into thinking: was that tile always looking like this, or did the man hold the phone like this from the start?

Exploring the passageway

The game is set in a seemingly never-ending underground passageway with only a limited number of decorations and furniture, while also featuring a man always walking past us without noticing.
The liminal and retro-infused graphics, paired with the monotonity and repetitivity of the surroundings, create an eerie and unnerving atmosphere right from the start. Turning right on a corner to see whether your guess is valid or not is a highly intense moment.

Conclusion

Pros
Cons
+ Great reimagination of the ‘spot the difference’ formula
+ Minimalistic, liminal aesthetics
+ The level of dread is always on the rise
- Having no list of possible differences, it’s hard at first to notice each difference
Final rating: Very Good
You can find my review chart here!
The Exit 8 is a highly enjoyable puzzle-horror title, which highlights how minimalistic the game design can be at times - and still manages to create a highly intense experience.
While the gameplay loop itself can be infuriating at times, after you pick up the game’s rhythm, it will get much more enjoyable.

:Hiii:

Hey man, been away due to a lot of things and I am not used to the current steam set up. It didn't notify me of the message you left on the profile. My bad. The invite may have timed out or maybe you canceled since I didn't respond. Just added you. Sorry about that.
