This is one of the most COMPLETE games in this genre to come out in a long time. You can very quickly see within a few minutes of playing that everything is done. The features are there, the systems are there, and the mechanics are there.

Early Access Review
Showing lots of promise as others have said.

What I should point out is that they dropped their first patch A WEEK after release that immediately incorporated player feedback. Given the history of how early access has gone, this shows even greater promise because I am currently confident this project will be seen through to the end.

Criminally overlooked. This is a highly interesting and engaging successor to Children of the Nile (sort of) with things like private and state workers, along with some modern additions like zoning. It's NOT a successor to those city-builders-but-actually-puzzle-games Impression games with walkers. Its production values are very indie, but I've found it immersive nonetheless.

Do you enjoy strategy games on principle, but the high pressure, high stress nature that comes with concepts like "APM" (actions per minute) turn you off the genre?

Regiments is for you.

I honestly ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ love this game, and I can't get enough of it. The fact you can pause it and take your time is the big draw. It's focused on singleplayer, thus devoid of any problematic development quirks that comes with multiplayer (i.e. trying to cater to an esports crowd).

Early Access Review
Landmark game for the genre that has made every other survival village builder released since Banished redundant.

For one thing, abandoning the grid is the big step forward for the generation. Your medieval villages will actually look like medieval villages straight out of an open world game.

A good example of a modern early access release where there's a lot of game to be had, versus the old days where early access games were incredibly barebones (and likely to be abandoned).

Should have been $5.

The North American assets function as good, generic US single-family homes at least.

For defending this game against skeptics, to be proven that the skeptics were right.

They announced this game in the SAME YEAR as it was released. Totally unnecessary given the state it's in, and the fact we may as well be waiting a full year (either from announcement or release) for it to be in a proper state.

Initial highway exit for these maps is a REGULAR ROAD instead of two more highways.

Are you a player of Cities: Skylines et al but not someone that engages in a whole lot of power building (superdecorating, etc)? Do you wish for things like medium density or things like slums? Does the sound of three socioeconomic tiers to diversify your city sound appealing?

I am recommending this game purely on the basis of my ability to build cityscapes I like to fly my camera around and through without having to go to the lengths one might have to in Cities: Skylines without a great amount of effort plopping decorations, etc. Moreover, the consistent architectural style present in this game makes me much more comfortable than either having to go intense workshop diving or just using Green Cities/P&P DLC growables in C:S.

In fact, for residential at least, there is more accurately something like 7 density levels (I have only got to 4, and I imagine getting higher is like SimCity where it's an actual challenge, unlike C:S). By default, low density is 1, medium density is either 3/4 depending on the spawn, and high density is 7. They don't immediately spawn at those levels; you're more creating a max limit, but you can get to 3 or 4 rather quickly (however, these will be low income at first). In addition, you can also set a custom density limit, which is how you can create a very nice gradient in terms of building heights. And even THEN, you can use the shift or ctrl tools to automatically set a 'wide' or 'narrow' lot when you drag the zoning tool along a street. Wide will be 6 units across, while narrow will be 2 units across. Wide lots would be good for zoning high-rises so that they are spaced out, or even single-family homes at the very outskirts of your town. To establish a gradient to a higher density area, I did narrow low density, then narrow custom density at 2, then medium density at 3, then medium density at 4, covering 4 blocks. As a result, you have single family homes, then duplexes, then small apartment buildings, to good-sized apartment buildings.

This allows me to create a nice cityscape quickly, without resorting to the lengths some of us find challenging in Cities: Skylines. HOWEVER, this is square grid ONLY. That may be a deal-breaker if you are a powerbuilder. Moreover, the road selection leaves something to be desired (getting a four-lane seems to be expensive) and transportation is just a case of dropping down stops. This is because it is a numbers-driven simulation rather than an agent-driven simulation like in Cities: Skylines. I haven't become entirely acquainted with that simulation yet, but I know it has things like slums automatically appearing if housing demand isn't met. Just I've been hooked on what I can do with the zoning tool, and that's what draws me in!
