Game rules full stop, once you get used to the somewhat novel inventory management system. Seamless transition from outer space / orbit to planetary surface makes for an incredibly immersive experience. Space combat is varied enough and juuuust complex enough to be interesting. Surveying is fun especially with the diversity of species models they've continued to roll out. Foot combat is fine, if not really satisfying for the twitchy headshot types. Errands and empire management might get a bit repetitive, the settlement system could still use some tweaking but hey it's still fun to scoot around.

It's also amazing to have devs who just keep pumping out content, often in spite of the fanbase's desperate pleas to stop because there's only so many hours in a day during which you can consume it. They took the early negative feedback extremely seriously and buckled the heck in to remake this game into an delayed classic.

play it on a projector / surround system with your kids or something.

Early Access Review
I don't ever review games, but this one is worth doing it for.

Against the Storm is an incredible mashup of city-builder, base-builder / defense, anno-style supply chain management, and pseudo-4X mechanics packaged into a roguelite non-grind. Nearly perfect integration of all the challenges of these various archetypes, with space to innovate and maybe even brute-force your way around the ones that get really frustrating. It tickles my brain in a way that Black & White 2 did back in the day. Reasonably soft learning curve thanks to a decent tutorial, although there's a bit of a throwing-into-deep-end feel after the end of those two missions.

Pretty graphics reminiscent of heyday WC3 and a soothing soundtrack. I've now checked the bona fides boxes of foundational influences to reference so just... if you like Bideo James, you should play this. I couldn't stop and now it's 1 am and I have to work in the morning.
