The game has fallen short of my expectations but it's a mixed bag of some great elements and some that are varying levels of annoying. The music, sounds and visuals are great. The setting and atmosphere captivated me from the start. Combat is pretty interesting but can sort of be abused. I beat the game playing every fight solo unless I had to take other people with me, which made the whole injury system a non-issue (I either won, or lost and replayed the fight, so never ended a fight with injuries), and I know several people don't like how a single character is better than a full party because of the turn order system. Overall though, it kept me engaged throughout the game, whereas The Banner Saga's fights got repetitive fairly fast (and there were so many of them).

My main concern with the game lies with the story logic and writing. As others have said, dialogue is often weird, with characters blurting out a bunch of stuff at once, and others replying with something completely different and unexpected. Many of the choices you make aren't as clear as they could be (an innocent-looking comment turns into you threatening someone) and there are far-reaching consequences to "choices" that aren't even really conscious (I lost a main character and his entire party because someone in the group did something I had no control over; apparently I should have killed them way back at the beginning when I met them, but why would I have done that?).

Devs are currently working on improving the English translation, so hopefully that will smooth out some of the rough edges. Not sure that involves adjusting the choices and consequences, though. So players should still know going into this game that it will kick them in the proverbial nuts every now and then for very arbitrary reasons. That's what they mean by "roguelike storytelling." ♥♥♥♥ happens and you can either deal with it and keep going or retry for a better outcome now that you've seen the trick; but for me, that's an approach that works better for skill-based gameplay than for storytelling. And as others said, you have a whole map full of branching paths to explore, but anything other than the shortest route will inevitably lead to people dying and you probably getting a bad end, so you're not really encouraged to actually explore all those options. Unless you can detach yourself from the characters and enjoy finding out what new terrible things can happen to them if you go this way instead of that.

Still, overall it's a good effort that I would recommend if you know what you're getting into. The soundtrack alone makes me happy to have backed the project on Kickstarter, and I look forward to the novel. The multiplayer mode (still in development at the time of writing) also adds value if you do enjoy the combat and you're into pvp.

All in all, this was rather tedious and uninteresting. Slow backtracking, nothing really motivating storywise, none of the humor that made QFI's charm. Even considering the retro style the game is going for, it felt cheap and unwieldy at times. After a while my only motivation to keep playing was that I knew it would be over in about three hours anyway. I sadly have nothing good to say about this game.

What a nice little gem of a game. From the low price and short playtime, I expected a semi-professional game with enough charm to pass an evening on the cheap. While indeed completable 100% in 3 hours, it exceeded my expectations with the quality of the voice acting, the soundtrack and the overall design and experience. In terms of humor, it had just the right kind of wit I appreciate in point-and-clicks without overdoing it and compromising the cartoony but gloomy atmosphere of the setting.

It's the first game I play that focuses this heavily on solving a case, and I enjoyed it more than I expected. The clue and evidence system was intuitive and nicely visual, it was engaging to collect objects and get every NPC's thoughts on them and other characters, and the solution to the plot was neither convoluted nor obvious.

I would not hesitate to recommend Detective Grimoire to any fan of point-and-clicks, as well as anyone looking for an approachable game to get a taste of the genre. While a few key objects are harder to find than others, you won't have to spend considerable time hunting for pixels or trying to combine junk in your inventory: as long as you pay attention to what you're being told and piece the implications together, the story flows very nicely and the things you hear naturally point you in the right direction to progress.

It's been a long time since a game made me feel so "at home." Not just immersed, but genuinely embracing the game world and enjoying just being in it. The art and music contribute largely to this feeling, but also the very charming characters and refreshingly original setting. I don't play metroidvanias often, but this one hit all the right buttons for me with its oldschool-like level design including several new and unique mechanics to spice up gameplay, its manageable difficulty curve with challenging bosses that require practice but never outright overpower you if you adapt to their patterns, and a satisfying share of optional hidden rooms and collectibles.

A few parts of Owlboy annoyed me, but the high praise is certainly justified in my opinion. Perhaps a bit short for its current price, but I beat it in 11 hours without going for achievements and collectibles and can see myself playing it again at some point just for the good vibes. I would have loved to spend more time with those characters and get to know them better in a longer game, but maybe we can get something like a sequel someday.

This is a preliminary review for the fixed version of the game. After trying the game on launch and getting sorely disappointed like most, I can now say that it looks like the game I originally backed on Kickstarter and will be worth its price. I can't review much of the game yet as I've only played half an hour of the new release, but the developers deserve some love for rolling up their sleeves and going through all the improvements. If this looks like a game you'd like, you can now safely buy it!

"DAMN YOU, I CAN'T TYPE 'CREDITWORTHINESSES' ANY FASTER!"

And it's not even the worst this game threw at me, but I somehow managed to pull through. The adaptive difficulty setting seems to be doing its job well, as throughout the game I was always kept on my toes and progressively had to get more serious about my typing, without having to retry any boss encounter more than twice (and up to 5-6 times for a couple of the end-game optional nests). The visuals are fantastic and set a great mood, along with the audio and narration. The story takes a backseat and ends with a variant of "it was just a dream!" that I loathe but seems fairly common in indie games that take a self-reflection approach. Anyway the focus is really more on the action and gameplay, so I never really cared about where the narration was going and I could see the "reveal" coming after a few of the dungeons.

Overall, a very solid game that I would recommend to anyone looking for a challenging action game (with some simple puzzles in the dungeons) that feels very rewarding, as long as you don't mind relying entirely on a keyboard. Took me close to 8 hours to complete, and there's an arena mode if you want to push yourself further.

A note for Linux users: I'm playing this under Linux Mint and had occasional crashes when leaving/entering areas, a few of which made me lose progress. Others have reported the same issue.

COMBAT:
Mechanically, combat is pretty straightforward in TBS. Each unit has armor and strength; armor reduces incoming damage, while strength is both health and damage. Most of the time you'll be sundering armor first to let other characters do more damage, but combat still feels interesting since you have to carefully decide where to place everyone, when to spend willpower to boost your attacks or use abilities, and who to include in your party to combine the most useful character abilities and stats. I did not buy this game for the fighting, but if you like tactical turn-based combat, this gets the job done in a fairly simple manner. My biggest grudge would be the lack of clarity in some ability descriptions, and a lack of detail in the tutorial regarding some of the interface. There were several instances of "Oh, if I had known that earlier..."

STORY:
I was mostly interested in the game for its theme and its focus on choice and consequences, and I was not disappointed. The story was interesting, and the characters varied, although I wish a few things about the lore had been explained more. Where the game truly shined for me was in the choice department. You won't just be deciding who to be friends with, or be given false choices that send you to the same game state. It doesn't take long until the game gives you the burden of decisions with no clear outcomes, with several lives hanging in the balance. Who to save, who to side with, who to trust, whether to let people starve or risk them dying in battle, when to uphold your principles and when to do anything to survive... It soon felt like every other choice had me think "I don't know enough to make the right decision!" or "No! I'll lose someone either way!"... which is exactly the position the characters were in. I may not have seen a game before where my choices had so much impact, nor have I spent so long looking at a screen wondering what to pick. The game really makes you feel like you are sharing the characters' struggle and responsible for getting people out of it alive.

Because of this, I also expect to have a decent level of replayability as you can drastically influence the smaller events of the story and determine who lives and who dies. Combined to the large amount of recruitable NPCs and their varied classes that let you experience combat in different ways, I can easily imagine doing 2 or 3 playthroughs even without achievement hunting.

ART & SOUND:
While I appreciate the overall aesthetic of the game, I can't say either the visuals or music stood out for me in the end. The travelling caravan looks nice enough at first, but gets stale after a few hours of scenery changing very slightly as it scrolls past slowly. The animation is minimal, which I think is fine as I see it more as a step above a visual novel rather than a step down from fully animated cinematics. The rest is up to one's taste. The music fits the game well, moody during travel and adequately bombastic or tense during battle, but isn't the kind of soundtrack I would buy on its own.

Overall, a great purchase and a memorable game and story. I'd buy the sequels if they were on Linux.

Nelly Cootalot: The Fowl Fleet is a fairly straightforward game that does not make you stop and think too long about each puzzle or force you to combine items aimlessly to figure out what to do next. Your goals are simple, and the way to accomplish them is often hinted at with just an ounce of subtlety by dialogue or object descriptions. The first minigame was the only one I didn't really grasp, and I still made it on my first try with a lucky guess. The others could have used some explanation at least for using their interfaces like Daedalic did for the Deponia series, but trial and error doesn't punish you for failure, so you can just figure it out on your own.

The main selling point of the game would be its humor, which had me not only smile at the numerous puns but genuinely laugh out loud at some of the main character's quips. Nelly herself is another high point of the game with her endearing mix of lawlessness and cluelessness. Her remarks make you want to look at every object twice to make sure you hear all the clever little things she has to say about them.

Overall the game is a bit on the short side (a little over 5 hours for me), but a fun and relaxing interactive adventure throughout. Likely an excellent choice to introduce your kids to the genre!

I must say I got exactly what I expected from this game. Cute voice acting, nice soundscape, simple puzzles and an interesting little story about finding one's courage. The only thing I could hold against the game is that the voice clips get a little repetitive, but with about 90 minutes to completion, it isn't much of an issue.

A good game to unwind and clear your mind with at the end of a crappy day =)

Ever since I played Monkey Island 3 and a couple King's Quest as a kid, I've been somewhat fascinated by point-and-click games, yet I never dared to buy one because I didn't know what to expect from their story, tone or puzzles. I've even had a few of Daedalic's previous games on a "maybe" list for a while now and enjoyed Deponia's demo, but never made a move. But after playing through Memoria's demo I decided it was time to jump in and give them a chance - and having completed the game in two days, I can say I made the right decision.

I won't go into too much detail since there are already plenty of reviews out there, but I can honestly say that I was pleased by every aspect of the game. The visuals are great (and what made me look into the original Dark Eye intially) although I might have preferred 2D character models as I'm not a big fan of mixing 2D and 3D. I would say the voice acting ranges from decent to good, but there are a few cases where the lines don't match the subtitles and one in particular was spoken in German. The main story with Sadja was very compelling although you could say it made Geron's side of the game seem mundane by comparison - but they strike a good balance for either character's play time. As someone who is increasingly demanding on games to provide a good story, this one didn't leave me wanting in any way. So while everything has room for improvement (as always), it's good quality all around.

And lastly, but not least, the puzzles (including object use and matching). Even though my experience is certainly limited, this game had the best balance I've seen for puzzle difficulty, hinting, variation and flavor. The convenience of highlighting action items with the spacebar should be a staple in every game if you ask me, and I liked that very few of those were effectively useless. I've played other games where you can interact with so many objects in every scene, making you wonder how you could use them, where in fact most of them are just glorified scenery. In Memoria, your inventory is more limited so even if you're stalled, you don't have thousands of combinations you can try before you realize that you missed something.

With the quest log giving an extra hint if needed without spoonfeeding you and the fact that the maze, which is frankly just random guesswork, can be skipped after a few minutes, this is the best puzzle experience I've had so far. All of them require at least a bit of thinking, with some being decidedly trickier, but even when you get stuck you have the tools (and a limited amount of possibilities to explore) to figure things out without resorting to walkthroughs.

The game was more resource-hungry than I expected from a point-and-click and crashed a few times due to memory leaks, but since I'm a frequent saver and the game autosaves, I never lost more than a couple minutes of repeating easy-to remember steps. And even though 11 hours (personally) may seem short to some, I felt it was ideal to effectively deliver the story that is presented here, without unnecessary filler nor leaving anything important unexplored.

All in all, Memoria was great for me all around and it accomplished something very important as I will now be much more eager to try more point-and-click games, starting with Chains of Satinav to know more about Nuri, then other Daedalic titles.
