See where it all started, with the real original survivors, in the better darker atmosphere, shortly after the first infection began, in the zombie apocalypse. I believe this one still goes on sale often, so it's worth checking out.

Custom content DOES still work, it's only disabled in versus on official dedicated servers.
The change is most likely to try to prevent cheaters in competitive modes.
Also, this was once already a thing for official servers anyway, it's not new.
People sometimes want a clean, pure, vanilla experience and it's their right.
For a game highly popular due to the community and custom content why change that?
Especially when the workshop for this game came out barely a year after the game.
Mods were already getting disabled server side with modified servers anyway ("pro mod").
Don't let all the abusive trolling reviews fool you, any new maps and mods DO still work.

This game isn't really as bad as I first thought. For a long time I was against it and stuck with the first. But then my senses finally came to me and I gave it a try around the time of the Passing when it was on sale and a friend gifted it to me. Later on after meeting some really great people, and after following lots of new custom maps, and after the Sacrifice I ultimately moved on over to only this one. We have the L4D1 maps on here now and can even play as the L4D1 survivors in some. Plus, it's been said the add on system is more advanced, and you don't even need to edit game files for most add ons such as skins... everything's a vpk now. I even have help making a campaign for this one. And this one seems to go on sale quite a lot, really no reason to not have it by now. I've lost track how often it's gone on sale this year alone. You've got new guns and other items, including melee weapons. Little Zoey with a big M60... what's not to like about a cute girl with a big gun? :)
