This is a review for Steam Nominations purpose, so basically not an in-depth review. Game is still early access but already shows so much potential. Last time I played though there were bugs so hope they can address that. Hope they also add more stuff, more customization options, npc companions maybe.

I wish there was an option between recommending and not. (Probably spoilers below)

Starfield for me, compared to other Bethesda entries is just an "ok" game (even sometimes feels like a downgrade from other games tbh). Good things being offset by bad things. A lot of things could have been better (like the story, characters, companions, etc.). However, the thing that turns me off the most, hence the non-recommendation, is the fact that the so called "NG+" by the community would reset the player's progress in almost everything (Haven't reached it yet as of writing, but have read of it a lot in the discussions). This really discourages engaging in other elements of the game such as exploring for good outpost locations, decorating your homes and building the best ship. I feel that it's very counter-intuitive of how the game is built, since a lot of things in game require a bit of grind and accumulation of loot. If Bethesda really wanted multiverse diving, they could have allowed the player to go back to their original universe while exploring the others. But that option is not offered to the player (and I'm not forseeing a change in this anytime soon). There is an option not to go through the process, but then that means you would be missing other content, which is a bummer.

I still like playing the game, as I like wandering around the silent expanse, but I may not go through the "NG+" option.

TLDR: What's the point in playing through the game when almost everything is just going to be reset.

A chill driving game, which focuses more on exploration and a little survival, rather than logistics (unlike other driving games, i.e. Eurotruck). Basically, the saying: "it's not the destination, but the journey". As of the writing of this review, the journey is a bit unvaried as there are really just a few point of interests to explore until it becomes a bit monotonous like the sands all around which is the game's namesake. Games like this, really holds a huge potential to be something more, it just needs more and varied content, to which the developer is working on, albeit a bit slow (like others of the same premise). I'm leaving a recommendation, for the hope that it gets better in time.

Played the game using Ancient Magic (on an old laptop below the system requirements) which suprisingly run "well" in 100 hours of wizarding (finished the main story and then some). If you are like me who doesn't own a Firebolt (but can cast Levioso on a non-flying broom) and can stand the "occasional" polygonal graphics just to experience this Snidget of a game then you are in for a Butterbeer (much more so if you have the galleons for it).

P.S. Thank you for the kind person who gifted me this game. If you can read this, know that you are one of those who make real magic happen in this world, and for that I am ever thankful. 🧙

This game is not for everyone.

I can't say how many times I debated in my mind to refund the purchase. And while I eventually came to like the game after going through its steep learning curve. I wouldn't recommended the experience to anyone looking for an adventure-exploration experience. The game is tagged as an "rpg"when it's not quite an rpg as you are railroaded into some specific playstyles just to progress. Some load-outs are just more superior than others (due to encumbrance mechanics). The game also reinforces a "cautious and sneaky" playstyle, which when you deviate from, the game penalizes you heavily with death and time loss due to permadeath. While it does have meta progression as roguelikes do, it feels unrewarding since you just lost a character which you invested 10+ hours into. . Edit for Update: There is a save feature implemented in game (save while in camp). This does alleviate some frustrations for character loss (especially when said loss is by reason of bugs). However, it also eliminates the reason to create your next character as rare buffs can only be acquired once per world (a subsequent character will be weaker compared to the first character who acquired those buffs - unlike how other roguelikes work)

Another issue with the game is it still has loads of bugs. While there is a "prayer" system that helps you get out of stuck situations. There are instances where this mechanic can only do so much and then you have to go ask the devs in discord to help you with the problem. Though I appreciate the quick and responsive support of the devs, the problem shouldn't have existed in the first place, being that the game is already out of early access. I personally experienced this as I can't get into the endgame area since a mountain generated in front of the path and I can't back-out since I already unlocked the final gate.

Another problem with the game is that you can't just experience the entirety of the story in one world, there are elementals/masks that are not unlockable due to the world generation limits. It wouldn't be a problem if the game session per run was a short and repeatable experience (e.g binding of isaac), but it's not. Playing the game is a slow, deliberate and careful effort that starting a new game just to experience the same slow yet now more repetitive thing (since you've experienced it already) is no longer that fun.

Edit: I finished the game, however, there is another aspect of the game that is quite weak - its Story. There is indeed lore scattered about in the game, however, such lore are a bit scarce considering the number of ruins scattered about. Furthermore, the world seems to despise your character or don't really care about them. For a person who is working to save the world, it doesn't really seem motivating when people (even ordinary vagrants) attack you. You need to work a lot to turn other clans to allies (as if these clans don't care if the world ends) and there is no lore explanation why one clan has "angry" relations with you to begin with. The ending is also a bit empty (no post-ending or epilogue) and the world doesn't mourn for the death of your character (no tombstone, memorial, or even a passing mention).

While I really liked what the game was going for (music, world-building, artstyle, LOTR influence), ultimately like other reviewers said, the game just doesn't respect your time. So with a heavy heart, I just can't recommend it.

Similar to Caves of Qud, albeit prettier, The Doors of Trithius really shows a lot of promise. The base gameplay loop there and is pretty good, though there are indeed bugs, but nothing game-breaking. Definitely worth keeping an eye on this one. Hopefully there will be plenty more updates (the game has a werbsite and a roadmap, so it's quite optimistic) and added features (e.g. character sprite customization - as all sprites appear to be male).

Roadwarden is reminiscent of those CYOA adventure games on paper where you make a choice and flip to a speicific page. To be honest with this review, I played on the easiest difficulty (without time limit) so I can see as much as I can in one playthrough. With that said I can say that the story and the different choices given are thoughtful and are indeed consequential. Overall if you like text-based adventure games, it's a solid 8.5/10.

No Man's Sky teaches a lot of lessons for those willing to look and self-reflect.

In game, it teaches us that even if we feel alone, we are not truly alone. There is a difference between solitude and loneliness. Challenges are there, but they can be overcome. That even if we are still, we can still explore, and there's a lot to see.

In real life, it teaches us that despite our initial failures, we can still try and will eventually become better. That such a pursuit is a continuous journey. That we always have a chance and a shot at redemption.

I may not have been in the beginning, but I can say like the others, that indeed this game has come a long way, and based on how its going, will continue to do so. It may not truly be perfect, but no one truly is -we can only try to find the best version of ourselves - this game is just that. Truly gives heartfelt lessons on what it means to be human and to be alive.

Fantastic little gem. It's plays a bit similar to Cultist Simulator (another great game) but with its own unique twist on the survival genre. It's really short though. I hope the game gets more content as it truly has the potential to become something more.

Terraria despite its seeming initial simplicity, is a game of such great depth and fun, it's an iceberg of a game that can compete with titanic AAA games and a really good game to sink time in. The game continues to get free big updates even after the proclaimed "last one". The experience is even more fun with friends. Easily a great recommendation.
