Early Access Review
You probably know this already, but it's Half Life 1 if you played as a scientist and had to survive for several weeks, with a little bit of SCP sprinkled in.

It's still in early access, but it's got a fun gameplay loop. I don't normally like survival crafting games, but I like ones that give you a direction to go in. I'm playing with friends, but this could even be fun alone. I like it for the same reason I liked games like Subnautica, though with a 1999 graphics style and Portal style humor.

If you played and enjoyed Subnautica, you'll like this game. If you haven't, but you like the idea of a survival crafting game that has set goals and isn't just a sandbox where your accomplishments feel meaningless, you'll enjoy this game. If you do enjoy the survival crafting games that are sandboxes, I think you will still enjoy this game, as several of my friends do like the sandbox survival crafting games and were extremely happy when I told them I would host a server if they would play with me (they had played through the game before and wanted to play again after a major content update, and they were limited to 6 players because they just used the host a game feature, rather than a dedicated server like I'm doing.)

I'm a long time armored core fan. This game has definitely dumbed down some of the mechanics in comparison to previous games, it doesn't take away from the core (see what I did there... I'm not sorry) combat that's been central in a huge way. While people were whining before the game released about the auto tracking, it's nothing like it is in the Dark Souls series. You CAN still lose your tracking if something zips by fast enough out of view and have to use the right stick to turn and grab it again, even with the lock turned on. Now, I wish some things like gun arms and extensions would make a return, but overall to me this feels like going from Monster Hunter 4 to Monster Hunter World. Technically yes it's dumbed down, but it's not so dumbed down it's not fun for the veterans, AND it's not so complex that new people to the series can't enjoy it.

I love the story telling in this, though it won't be for everyone, since (like previous games) there's not always a cut scene to really fill in what happens and you have to make some inferences based on dialogue to understand some events.

There's also some nitpicky QoL things that could be added, but overall it's good. I didn't run into any noticeable gameplay bugs and I had a few crashes, though I think that was related to my PrimoCache program. Once I killed that program I haven't had anymore crashes. I didn't need it as much at this point anyways. Runs great at high on 1440p with an average of 100-110 FPS with no noticeable frame drops or stuttering on an RX 6800 XT and an R7 5800X.

Literally unplayable at this moment. It's fun when it plays, but lately it changes all of my screens resolutions on start up, and will change it's own screen assignment and resolution as I'm in windows trying to fix the resolution problems it caused, WITHOUT ME EVEN TOUCHING THE PROGRAM! It doesn't matter what the configuration files say, it will always start at 640x480 on my SECONDARY monitor. That's not even the main problem. The main problem starts when I start trying to fix it. I change it back and put it on the primary monitor and set my resolution back to 1920x1080 (using its poorly placed settings menu... I mean seriously, it's not even in the main menu. I have to go to campaign, then my save file, THEN settings to get to settings.) then my secondary screen is still stuck at 640x480. Okay, fine. I alt+tab and go to windows display settings and set my secondary monitor to 1920x1080... or at least I try to. Now the second monitor is fine, but my third monitor is now at 640x480 and Doom has switched to it as its display monitor... and that monitor is in portrait mode. Windows is also freaking out and slowing down every time a change is made.

Eventually after enough monitor musical chairs, I have everything set up how it should be. Problem solved right? WRONG!

Now when I actually attempt to play the game, every time there is anything like action, I get massive amounts of ghosting on my screen. It looks like it's trying to display the same frame twice over except the second one is 1/4 seconds late. No settings combination or presets seems to mitigate this at all. My frames are still reading normal, so it doesn't seem to be performance related, with having it on low settings with the issue persisting supporting that observation. I also don't want to restart the computer or the game because I don't want to play monitor/resolution guessing games anymore, which has happened every time I have started the game except the very first time.

I am honestly just probably going to uninstall the game, and because of this I have no interest in getting Doom Eternal. I mean, it looks like a lot of fun, but I'm not going to pay $60 for a game that might not work or when it does, makes my eyes bleed while puking from motion sickness.

So far the only Ripping and Tearing this game has had me doing much of is my own hair.

I can't get it to work. I use a Focusrite 2i2 audio interface. I can't get it to output any audio to it OR receive any input audio from it. I don't have a real tone cable and I've read that the driver for that doesn't get along with windows. I've read about some mods to make the game function like it's supposed to however all of those were created before they added the ability to use a microphone (or other line in). I can't seem to get my device detected at all no matter what settings it's on, so for right now it is impossible for me to use this software as intended

I'm just glad I got this on a humble bundle and didn't pay full price for this hot mess.

*EDIT* Alright, so I found a 1/4 to 3.5mm converter that I had lying around from awhile ago and forgot about. I tried the game with that. It detected it and it definitely detects audio input... however, the thing can't seem to figure out what frequency anything is at. I ran through a tuner on my phone that did fine, but the game's can't figure out what is going on. I ran through a song and some practice and it didn't detect any notes being hit, despite it being in tune. Now I ran through this with my electric 6 string, which has some wiring issues on the pickups that I have yet to fix, so I went through and tried my Bass, which is brand new. I had the same issue after setting it to Bass mode. This may have something to do with the input I'm trying (which is literally just my guitar straight to a microphone jack on my desktop with the adapter on the end of the guitar cable) but that still doesn't excuse the fact that I can't get my scarlett 2i2 working with this. I'm not really very motivated to buy their specific cable for this, especially considering how poor their engineering seems to be, with one example being the requirement of your audio output device being 48000Hz and 24bits and not being able to deviate from that setting at all (my 2i2 won't let me go above 44100Hz at 24bits with its playback). I'm really not feeling that excited to go buy a 40-50 dollar accessory that MIGHT work (considering most things I've read about it say it has completely garbage drivers that just keep disconnecting the device)

*EDIT*
After a little bit more research and tinkering had me find that my setup should have been perfectly fine (especially since the audio I recorded from it sounded great) and I found several people have issues with the tuning and frequency detection. Sometimes it would have you tune your guitar higher or lower than the actual note it says your tuning for (like tuning to F when says it wants E) and even having that be changed by what volume you have it set at (no idea how that happens). Mine doesn't even do that, mine just kind of runs around frantically telling me to go looser or tighter but never leaving the edge of the tuning gauge. Apparently this is also not unheard of. I'm kind of annoyed considering I also bought some DLC songs while they were on sale but wasn't able to get around to trying the game (not a smart choice on my part, but I didn't expect the game to not function as advertised)

Early Access Review
The game is a great concept, but I would keep looking at other games with similar concepts until this game at least leaves early access. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS RAGE INDUCER!!! There are still several things in the game that are easily exploited by other players, the most noticeable I've seen is lag exploitation. This game has terrible lag compensation and it tends to somehow make players move ahead of where they actually are. I've even noticed this happen to me (I would skip further ahead in a run or when I tried to run into a doorway at an angle I would skip to the otherside of the doorway and get stuck in the animation that makes me move my momentum in the other direction. Also doors don't always seem to want to open. I have an excellent connection and have seen this problem on multiple connections besides my own). I've noticed several players who seem to use that to their advantage to make it much harder to track their movements while aiming or, if in the beginning of the game, make them run faster than you while you're both at a dead run with fists out (had a guy back up while reloading a weapon faster than I could run at him holding shift. It's ridiculous how much of an advantage this is and how easy it is to get). I've looked up how to do this and it seems a lag switch in this game is much more effective than in other games.

They have several other technical issues, such as the third person aiming not being accurate (it pulls slightly to the left of where the reticule actually is)

On top of all of that, they have a knack for banning people based on the say so of whiny adult sized children (I mean a bunch of streamers). So yeah, save yourself a headache and wait on this game, it is not worth it at this point. Maybe it will be fine at some point in its life, but right now it's a nightmare.

Got it for free from humble bundle (about 13 hours left after writing this review) It's really fun if you're into unique indie shooters. It looks like crap, but the controls are very detailed. The game is difficult and frustrating at times, but still really fun. It's really specific about where you have to shoot on the drones. This game isn't for everyone, but it's a fun, cheap little time waster that is actually somewhat fun and relaxing.
