This title is so much more than what's on the tin.

I was expecting a simple restaurant management grinder -- just something simple to kill some idle time -- but the gameplay is on par with some of the more popular classic NES titles (which this obviously harkens back to), and that came as a very pleasant surprise. (The graphics style suits the gameplay, for sure.) It has a fun storyline, and the tongue-in-cheek cutscenes are just amazingly well done. The story and introduction of new game mechanics progresses at JUST the right pace to keep you from putting it down without making the player feel either stuck or overwhelmed. It's a good thing my spouse is also a gamer. :)

This is a very well-polished game, and worth every penny at full price.

Quick note: While Steam says this is "mostly" playable with your controller, I find the controller far superior over the keyboard experience.

I don't generally review games, but this one demands it.

TL;DR: play. this. game.

I'm going to preface this by saying I've been in tech for 30 years, with a career spanning the whole corporate ladder. as a budding software developer in the 1990s, all the way through holding a VP title leading a full IT department in a multi-million dollar company.

Bitburner is exceptional on so many fronts. It's an insanely fun venture into the world of development, and it has something for everyone from the beginner to the expert. From learning how to write your first line of JavaScript to refining that sexy class library that eeks out the last smidge of resources, the challenges presented in this game are both fun and engaging.

If I were a public school teacher or college lab professor, I would demand this be a part of the curriculum. In the workplace, I send links to this game to everyone I work with (even former co-workers) to help hone skills. This isn't pseudo-code or the all-too-common lame interpretation of what coding is like. This is the real deal, and it presents obstacles that we face in the real world.

And adding to the accolades, it has an incredible, extensive group of people who add to it in the open source community. These folks aren't gatekeepers; they are legitimately welcoming folks who are out here spreading the art and science of software engineering.

Beyond all that, though, the storyline is rich and deep. I haven't even reached a point where I consider myself close to "done" and I've found myself saying, "Oh, holy ****" out loud on more than one occasion.

Just play it. If you find yourself disappointed, you need a career in accounting.

How are we three years past the original launch date and still giving this title (and its various deficiencies) a pass for being early access?

The original was one of my favorite titles in my 40+ years of video gaming. I'm still trying to wrap my head around how things went so far sideways on this one.

Do better.

I'm not really a review writer, but I do have to acknowledge a good game when it manages to capture this much of my attention. The mathematics and physics are amazing, and just keeps me coming back for more regarding the possibilities for ship and station building.

Chomping at the bit for multiplayer, base building, and more movable parts.
