First off, this is an Early Access review so I’m going to point out bugs that may have been squashed by the time you read this.

With that out of the way, I’d like to say that this is one of the best games where emergent gameplay is concerned. The terrain is procedurally generated [edit: it's not; sorry for this oversight] and the cannibals do not follow the same routes every time they go foraging in the forest. There were games that I got swarmed on almost immediately (I carelessly loitered around the crash site looking for food) and there were games that I survived for a few nights without the cannibals detecting me. It’s so exhilarating---and scary---in the night time as you stay low, scurrying away from and dodging the patrols. I believe when this is done, this is going to (provided that they keep developing this game and eliminate the bugs and refine the gameplay) set the bar for all open world survival games. The premise is just too good that I’ve often wondered “Combining elements of ‘I Am Legend,’ ‘The Beach,’ ‘Lord of the Flies,’ and ‘Descent’: why has no one thought of this before?”

As it stands now though (as of June 1,2014 GMT+8 11:10pm) v0.001 of The Forest, being its first public alpha release, suffers from game- and atmosphere-breaking bugs such as:

1. No ability to save your progress (being worked on; the devs are aware of this and have promised to launch a hotfix within the next two weeks).

2. Some texture abnormalities (Discovered this when I whaled away at luggage scattered on the beach.)

3. There were two times when everything just blurred and the night sky turned a surreal shade of dark blue. I can’t replicate it.

4. A few times where I couldn’t place a structure even though I was standing on level ground without any obstruction on the spot where I wanted to place the thing.

There’s also the problem of the cannibals being too tough. I believe this is intentional (the game would not be scary if they put in pushover baddies) but I really don’t think it’s realistic that any humanoid can withstand more than six axe strikes to the torso. Also, I’m still confused about how the AI’s line of sight system works. It would be so much better if the developers can patch in visual and auditory cues for players to know if they’ve been spotted; there was a time I was hunkering down behind a bush and I kept praying in the dark if the silent native six steps away from me would lose me. No luck. I’ve yet to successfully shake off a tracking party. This is one point that’s bugging me at the moment.

I’m currently recording videos of my gameplay and voicing out my thoughts about what I like and don’t like about the game. Here’s the first one (a “Click here for Part 2” should start appearing on the top right corner—if you’re watching this on YouTube—when I’ve uploaded several more videos):

If you’re not the patient kind, don’t buy Early Access games; they are, needless to say, almost always bugged. Some are unplayable. While The Forest is neither unplayable or finished, I can still say it’s one of those games that have deviated from the formulaic rut most Triple A corporations have fallen into.

My Imbacore review:

"Relic’s effort to bring the Warhammer 40,000 universe into the hack-and-slash genre is a success. While the game stubbornly sticks to its core action mechanics from beginning to end, there’s no other game that gives you the opportunity to wade into seemingly endless waves of Orks and Chaos Space Marines.

Lock and load soldier of the Imperium—in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, your belief that the 'Emperor protects' will be severely tested."
