This game is essentially a lightweight choose-your-own-adventure book mixed in with some real-time space combat and a dollop of tabletop-style dice rolls. It's an odd ensemble, but it works pretty well. Although you are constantly marching inexorably towards the story's end, the route that you take to get there can vary somewhat and the fate of several characters depends on your choices and actions. Dialogue choices, success (or failure) in ability checks, and choices made will also impact the development of your character in small but meaningful ways.

The space combat is fairly simplistic and repetitive, but it's satisfying enough that I didn't really mind it. Equipment choices are varied, but imbalanced so there aren't many real options to your loadout. Ultimately, this game is about enjoying the story and seeing how your decisions impact what happens. It's a niche game that shifts the focus to storytelling and immersion in the world it takes place in.

The music is beautiful, and really draws you into the events and setting as you read through what is essentially a short novel. The voice acting is hit or miss, some of the characters are really cheesy or exaggerated and I felt that improving the quality of this would have improved the game significantly. Some errors in the text remain, so the overall polish of the game seems a bit wanting.

It's not for everyone, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and did multiple playthroughs (and a lot of save scumming) to see how different story branches played out. If you're a fan of sci-fi novels (especially military sci-fi) and used to love those choose-your-own-adventure books as a kid, then you should give Between the Stars a try.
