What if LA Noir was a proceduraly generated, vaugely cyberpunk, alternate history, immersive sim?
You'd get Shadows of Doubt.
There are a few rough edges, I've fallen through the floor after jumping over a railing, and accidentally clipped through walls a few times and once I couldn't reach a hidden briefcase that spawned inside a wall, but those issues are few and far between and it all pales in comparison to what's being offered.
Full, real time simulation of hundreds of NPCs, all leading their own lives, carrying out their own agendas ect.

This is proc-gen used properly, instead of as a band-aid to compensate for tight deadlines or limited staff.
There is no "Well the Wiki says that the killer can randomly be X,Y, or Z so I've got a 1 in 3 chance of being right if i guess randomly"

The first time I played a proc-gen map (there also is a scripted tutorial which teaches the basics of the game)
I got interrupted in the middle of a "photograph this person" mission by my target getting randomly murdered; the killer ended up being an employee of some mega-corp who killed their supervisor (my original target) because they got a bad performance review, something I wouldn't have even known about if I hadn't bothered to check their work computer.

It's almost Crusader Kings 2 levels of simulation in a first person adventure game and I couldn't be more in love.

This is niche interest wish fulfillment on the level of My Summer Car or Kerbal Space Program, and I really hope the dev continues to not only bug fix but expand the scope of the game.

As it is though, warts and all it is absolutely worth the price

I almost didn't buy FS 22. I had 19 modded just the way I wanted and already had access to seasons and factories...why not just keep driving my virtual Kirovets around my virtual frigid Russian potato farm and wait for a heavy discount?

Because I have poor impulse control. Especially after a half a case of beer. Anyway...

The two big new features for 22 as mentioned are a seasonal cycle and factories

Seasons function much the same as they did in the popular mod for the two previous games, but quite a bit simplified. Crop rotation is not a thing, nor is having to wait for the ground to thaw in order to sow crops.
Instead each crop type has a specific, fixed time of year to plant and a time to harvest. Try to plant too early or too late and a message pops up telling you that you can't. Wait too long to harvest and crops wither, but that's not much of a threat since weather can't ruin your harvest the way it could in 19.

In 19 with seasons rain would force you to wait for a couple days of dry sunny weather before you could thresh. In FS 22, 5 minutes after a massive thunderstorm works just fine.

And honestly, that's OK.

On the previously mentioned Russian potato farm I occasionally lost an entire crop and an IRL hour worth of work because the spring thaw didn't come soon enough, or there was early snow.

Sounds like fun to me, but that's because I'm a f***ing strange, strange person.
Most people do not want to spend hours on a game treading the same ground (literally) and making little to no progress.

So the simplification of seasons mechanics strikes me as more of a calculated design decision and not just laziness. It's not my cup of tea but hopefully someone can still mod in the "crunchier" features I crave.

The factories though...
I used a TON of factory/production mods in 19 and after a few hundred hours of playing the "wait, this bakery will only accept flour produced by THIS mod, but first I need to download the pallet factory that only works with this OTHER MOD" game, I'm very happy to say that in 22 the productions are simple, user friendly, and fun to interact with.

Green houses, bakeries, dairies, ect once purchased all accept raw goods and turn them into refined products which can be sold for far higher profit. Something about turning cereal crops into flour into bread and loading it all up onto a truck to go to the store scratches just the right itch in my weirdo brain.

Trains have been changed too, no longer circling the border of the map, useful only as a distraction while you wait for Worker C to finish plowing field 42; they now cut across in a linear path from A-B. You can rent them for a fee to move products from one silo to another or travel off the map to an entirely different region (represented only as a pop-up text box) where you can sell goods for a significantly higher price.

All 3 of the base game maps are really good this time around, especially Elm Creek which is a nice fairly detailed mid-western US map.

Vehicle handling is still arcade-y but is helped by the new manual transmission option and the fact that vehicles, implements and cargo have actual weight now. Climbing a hill you'll have to drop a couple gears and trailers have a max weight limit, so you might be able to completely fill a trailer with grain, but only half full with potatoes. You cant actually break an axle, but its a nice touch all the same.

Paint wear was introduced in 19 and it's here too, but not as thoroughly implemented.
None of the base game tractors that I've used, and only some of the tools show cosmetic damage.
A 'paint condition' meter ticks down, but you can't actually see it.

I suspect this is the trade off we get for having licensed machinery in game. PS1 & early PS2 era racing games did the same thing; you can have real world brands, or you can have vehicle damage. Companies really don't like their products being portrayed as 'worn out' or sub-standard in any way. Its annoying, but nothing you can do.

Sound got a big upgrade. There are a ton of little details you probably won't notice unless you're coming form 19 or older. Thuds driving over railroad tracks, windshield wiper noise, air brakes, improved weather sounds, noises being amplified in a tunnel or garage, its all good stuff. The engines still sound kind of generic and under-powered but we're getting there.

Vehicle selection is pretty good, I know licensing is a ♥♥♥♥♥ so I wasn't expecting any 50 year old obscure eastern machinery to be in from the start, but we do get some older equipment like a 90's Valtra Valment and a Massey Ferguson 3670. There's also some electric and methane driven compact tractors and front loaders, and a used vehicle store which changes its stock every in game day, making it easier to buy some of the bigger equipment

All in all, I'm pretty happy. Its not a whole new game rebuilt from the ground up but i wasn't expecting one.
There's enough here to justify the $60, just don't fall for the season pass.

I've pissed 356 hours of my life away on FS 17, so naturally I bought this game 4 hours before release and....

Its a more polished version of FS 17 with a few new features.

And honestly, thats great. I simply don't understand the people leaving negative reviews because the core gameplay is the same. What the hell did you expect? zombies? a battle royale mode? Theres only so much you can realisticly do in a game primarly about farming. Anyway...

The bad:
  • Bugs. Ive encountered a few more since I first wrote a more positive version of this review about 4 hours in. The most glaring right now are a weird floaty physics issue after putting logs in a pickup and removing them, a sound hiccup when using the chainsaw, and a visual glitch with rain coming through the cab of certain vehicles. Ive also heard about multiplayer connectivity issues but as a single player only person I can't comment. These issues exist as of 11/20/18

  • Reported issues with connectivity and control bindings not sticking with wheels, pedals, ect. as of 11/20/18

  • Seasons and the Follow Me mod still haven't been implimented into the base game. Seasons I can kind of understand since people have strong feelings on the mod both for and against , so its absence is probably a calculated decision.
    Sim-ers are a fickle bunch

  • Vehicle list is a bit small. That's been the case for every farm sim game on launch and has to do with licensing difficulties. Still, if you're coming from a heavily modded version of fs17 you'll probably be a bit disapointed.

    The good:

  • While not mind blowing, the graphics look a bit crisper and cleaner. In particular, vehicle interiours look a lot less 'plastic-y' Hard to descibe but compare fs17 and 19 and its noticable.

  • The new start from scratch game mode is a lot of fun, and so far works just as advertised.
It's probably the only way I'll play the game from now on.

  • The maps, while small, have alot more detail and are generally more fun to explore than those in base fs17. the devs clearly took insperation from the modding community.

  • Sound improvements. the vehicle engine loops sound better and the rain sound effects are much better.

  • Tweaked vehicle handling. Vehicles in FS17 all felt stiff and toylike. more like driving an RC car than a big piece of machinery. While still not perfect, theres a sense of weight behind them now. There is however the physics issue mentioned above with pickups as of 11/20/18

I haven't played long enough to mess around with horses, the biggest new feature, yet but
overall: Same game, still good

Did you enjoy Car Mechanic Sim or Streetlegal Racing: Redline, and like the idea of building a car from absolute scratch?
Are you willing to contend with some slightly janky, Gmod esque controls?
Are you willing to figure out absolutely EVERYTHING for yourself, with no ingame help or tutorial?
If so this is the game for you!

All the promotional material for this game might make it look like a "so bad its good" joke game but when it comes to the actual car building its dead serious: You start with nothing more then a bare bones frame and have to, through trial and error, assemble a complete car from the dozens and dozens of parts scattered around your garage. Once thats done you'll have to fiddle with the valves and carburetor to make it run half decently and not constantly stall, overheat, or burst into flames.

Probably the biggest difference between this and Car Mechanic Sim is that there is nothing to stop you from ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ up.
In CMS if you attempt to complete a job with parts missing a box will pop up and inform you of that. Here there is nothing stopping you from building an engine with no head gasket, driving away with the brakelines unconnected,or as happened in my first playthrough, failing to tighten all the motor mounts completely. Getting the car to finally run (albeit poorly) is honestly one of my proudest gaming achievements to date.

The game has its share of odd design choises:
  • There isn't a button to get in/out of vehicles, instead you perform a Halflife esque crouch jump to climb through the open door, crawl around inside until you're in position,THEN push a key to enter 'driving mode'
  • You have no inventory; you pick up objects and hold them in place, rotating with the mouse wheel. If its a car part you rub it against the spot you think it goes until a check mark icon appears.
  • The entire game is one part mechanic sim, one part life sim. You have a needs bar that has to be managed, and there are a couple odd jobs you can perform to earn money for groceries, car parts, and most importantly beer.

If you can look past all that or better still see it as part of the game's charm, you'll have a great time.

Hatred; AKA: Captain Edgeington's Edgiest Adventure
The main issue is the gameplay gets stale very, very fast. The destructable buildings, explosions, and fire effects all look very pretty but there is far too little depth of gameplay play to back it up. Travel from A to B, kill an arbitrary number of people, rinse, and repeat. There just isn't enough here to justify the $20 price tag
