I loved this game in the beginning. I am not a great gamer and tend to play a lot of point and click games. So I can get bored easily. This one drew me in right away. For most of the game the jump scares actually surprised me. I didn't use a walkthrough because I wanted to be surprised- and in the start of the game they tell you the game changes based on your choices. Well, not really. You can find plenty of walkthroughs online so you can get all the collectibles and achievments and the story ends up fairly linear anyway.

There was a lot of neat detail, and the theme of rats reminded me of Coraline by Neil Gaiman. But I have to agree with reviews that say the game misses the mark. It comes so close. And then the ending is kinda "meh" and you have a lot fo questions that aren't answered. I feel like we only got part of a story and I want to know the entire context. It makes for a big let down I feel. For a game that started out so strong, it sure ends pretty dully.

I feel there was some un explored potential. Are you mad? or is your wife mad? what happened to the kid? the dog? The wheelchair and piano are pretty darm scary.

But honestly I just dont feel like I can recomend the game based on how much of a flop the endong seems to be. You were sooo close! But dropped the ball. There are 3 different endings apparently and you'll have to replay probably to get them all. But even reading them online doesn't tell me much about the story

It's not clear at all how to save, and without reading tips online you wouldnt know that you actually "die"

7/10

This game is a good value for the money you pay. The story line is really interesting as well as the art, but there were a lot of bugs.

Some of the bugs I noticed:

1) When you quit the game, it would automatically restart and launch again
2) The camera would stop following you and would take multiple resets or dying before it would start following you again
3) The camera will just freeze sometimes and you won't be able to leave a room
4) Cut scenes and using stairs would sometimes overlap so you'd miss out on part of the cut scene

The story line is really brilliant, up until the end. The end was a little cliched and predictable. But the gathering up of the story pieces as you go was interesting. I think it would make an interesting film if they ever turned it into one.

The save process was infuriating and made it hard to get through certain aspects of the game. You could go a LONG time without saving, which meant if you died or ran out of matches, you lost 30-45 minutes of game time.

A lot of aspects of the game I found impossible without a walkthrough. Just not very intuitive, I wanted to get all of the achievments but some were just too time specific for me like playing the whole game in 1 night, and beating it during a full moon. Though I followed a walkthrough it still seems like I missed picking up some diary entries etc.

The diaries and notes you get along the way are interesting but also pretty wordy and convuluded.

The music was lovely.

I played this with a Steam controlled and overall it ported really well and I found made the movements easier.

I think experienced gamers will find this game a little harder than they expect, but not because it's actually difficult, just that it's not as intuititve and the save process is so annoying. THere are a few levels that every walkthrough will tell you are just infuriating because it's basically so easy to die you just gotta play it over and over and it comes down to dumb luck and where the apparations spawn.

Still worth the play, but I wont be replaying to get my missed achievements.

EDIT:

Game has gone under, do not buy season pass.

Episode 1 review:

I'm a casual gamer, I played this using the steam controller.

So, steam controller port is mostly OK. I found the track pad really sticky no matter how much I turned up the sensitivity, so for things where I needed the trackpad I ended up using the mouse instead. Also the run function wasn;t in the default controller config so you have to set it.

Pros:
Mostly works OK with controller port
Amazing atmosphere
Great story
Very clear objectives
great characters and voice acting
great (so far) for casual gamers, if you're not the best at button mashing you can still manage this game
storyline was well paced

Cons:
It did crash for me a few times
Can't skip the cut scenes which can be frustrating if you accidentally click in to one you already watched
the walking is super slow and even when you run (which you don't always have the ability to do) it's slow
I wasn't a fan of the vocals, I'd have preferred just the music. It tried to be bluesy but came off really winey
would be nice if you could look around 360, I found the movement a bit clunky
July 2015 - March 2016 for the next episode release seems a realllllly long time. I am a slow gamer but it still only took me 2.5 hours to get through the first episode.

Overall I really would recommend this game to all levels of players. It seems to be a bit like choose your own adventure, but the cut scenes you can't skip might make it tedious to replay. I can't wait for episode 2.

Edited for Episode 2:

Storyline was intense! I wish it was a bit longer so we could find out what happened with SC a little more. Still can't make Elliot really run very well. Again, it crashed for me a few times. Some of the objectives were way too obvious, others not obvious enough.

This is a really psychological horror type game in that the underlying themes get creepier and creepier.

Can't wait for episode 3.

I got this game as a casual gamer, in a package with the first Alan Wake. Gotta admit, I found the first Alan wake too hard for me. But I got a Steam Controller for Christmas and it works so great with American Nightmare!

As a casual gamer I just played story mode on normal level. but this game has a lot of variation for people who wanna kick it up a notch with nightmare mode and arcade mode.

The graphics and voice acting were awesome. I found the actual gameplay much easier than the first one in terms of port. Movements were better, shooting was better, and just the overall controls were much better. I really can't say enough about how well it worked with the steam controller.

The cut scenes weren't too long, and the story was interesting... picking right up where Alan Wake left off. You don't have to have played the first game, the entire thing is on youtube if you wanted to watch the cut scenes so you know the story.

I did find it a bit repetative story wise. I was hoping for a longer scene after the end credits. The final boss battle was actually one of the easier battles of the game.

As opposed to the first one where you could get stuck in a loop where you restart a checkpoint but have no ammo or batteries, this game made sure there were plenty of opprotunities to get what you needed.

I found it interesting that most of the supporting characters were women, was kinda hoping to see some of the characters from the first Alan Wake.

I took me a while to beat, I'm sure more competant gamers could beat it faster and enjoy unlocking all the achievments. Good replay value.

I'm a casual gamer, with a bit of a hand tremor. So I've really struggled with using keyboards and button mashing. It limits the type of games I can play, and I often get bored.

Well, the gamer boyfriend in all his wisdom though using this controller would help! We had tried some of the other controllers but they didnt seem to port very well into the games I was playing.

I love love love my steam controller. It took me a bit to figure out configuring for all the games I play, and of course some older games it doesn't work with... but this made a huge difference for me. It gave me the ability to overcome my annoying fingers and really dive into some of these games! I find the scroll pad awesome, and all the buttons are very intutitive and responsive.

It is frustrating to have a physical disability keep you from having fun. but now I have a whole new world of fun games I can actually play! Thanks Steam!!!

This was the first game I ever played on steam. I'm a casual gamer, and not great at button mashing. I've always been a fan of Sherlock and I enjoy games with rich storylines. Because I am so bad with buttons I used to watch friends and family play games just so I could get the stories and solve puzzles.

I'm happy to say if you're like me and maybe suck at first person shooters, or have terrible reaction time, Sherlock is the kind of game you'll enjoy! Point and click with some walking around. Really basic and easy, BUT not boring. Great story, fun tasks, cool puzzles, great characters, and great voice acting.

I really enjoyed the twist ending.

I basically joined steam because I was on a big Sherlock kick (reading the books) and the gamer boyfriend told me the Sherlock games were on sale. I am a VERY casual gamer, usually stick to generic console games and DS because I SUCK at button mashing. I had not been introduced to the world of point and click games that were puzzle based, and I gotta say they're now my favourite genre.

These types of games are great for people like me who enjoy rich stories, great graphics, and interesting puzzles... but maybe aren't so good with reaction times, or the first person shooters. ;)

The voice actor for Sherlock is super interesting. I could listen to him narrate and talk all day! The puzzles were a good range from easy to challenging, and there was the option to opt out if you were stuck. (though I wouldn't do that, just look up a tutorial!)

You occasionally play as Watson or the dog Toby and that's pretty cool. The controls are fairly simple.

This game is different than the other Sherlock games. Not only is the movement and graphics better, but the world itself is very rich. It's almost like a choose your own adventure. You draw up your OWN conclusions and there are multiple outcomes for a case. Which I found really interesting because it shows you the percentage of people who played the game and got the same outcome as you!

It's tricky to get all the achievements and likely needs do be played 2-3 times due to all the possible outcomes. This game is LARGE however. It's not one story like the previous games, but several. Something you can really sink your teeth into.

Some of the actions can get a bit reptitive, and it would be nice if there was one common storyline linking everything together. But I still really enjoyed it and am super happy to hear they're making another!!!

I am a casual female gamer, not great with button mashing. I really love rich story lines, rpg styled play, and puzzles! This game included all of that. If you're casual like me, it's a great point and click that isn't boring. Too often I find the point and clicks are slow paced, but this isn't.

Most of the game is really innate. You know what your goals are and what you have to do. I rarely needed to look something up, so that's a plus for the casual gamer.

The storyline is reallllly cool, the characters, the voice acting, all of it.

My only negative is I didn't clue in to just how open the world was. You can explore a lot and do side quests and I missed a lot of them because I was only following the storyline. Newb mistake for sure, so be sure you do all the fun stuff on the side to get all the achievements.

Graphics and controls were great.

Casual female gamer here.

I found Soma through my queue. I really enjoy rich storylines, but I'm not the best at button mashing. I started Soma with the keyboard but when the Steam controller came out, the boyfriend gifted me with one in hopes I'd have an easier time. (side bar I have an illness that causes hand tremors, and found the controller really helped with that) I found it much much easier to play with the controller and I recomend it to anyone who struggles with button mashing!

Soma has a rich storyline, amazing voice actors, unique environments, and interesting characters. It's paced very well, and I like that it's the type of game that doesn't require levelling up. For a first person perspective I found it a lot easier to manuever than most first person shooters (something I totally suck at). The storyline is unveiled as you play and it motivates you to get past the hard stuff- you just want to know what happens.

There's a lot of little side data mines you can enjoy. Most aren't neccesary to beat the game, but they paint a bigger picture of the story. It's almost like detective work.

The game has puzzles but I admit I needed to use tutorials to solve most of them. Most didnt have any directions so not only did you have to solve the puzzle, you needed to figure out what the puzzle actually was and what it wanted you to do. This was fun the first two times, but then it got old fast for me.

There are parts of the game that aren't innate at all. I have no idea how a person would figure it out without a tutorial. I think the game could of used a little more direction. Maybe on screen goals that remind you what the next task is. Occasionally the co-charafcter Katherine would give you guidance but you didn't always have acess to her.

The monsters were scary! They reminded me of slender man meets venom. In this game, you can't fight em! Which was kind of annoying. It really just becomes a matter of hide and seek when the monsters are around. I found it easier to deal with the monsters inside the buildings than the ones in the water. The building monsters couldn't hurt you unless you looked at them. The water monsters didn't GAF. So it was frustrating you couldn't fight them. I'll also say the difficulty levels with the monsters in the buildings are all over the place. That is probably fine for seasoned gamers. But I'd caution my fellow casual gamers or those with low reaction time! I got through about 75% of the monsters by my own, and of those about 25% I had to watch a walkthrough to figure out how to get around them. The 25% I couldn't do myself I had to get my seasoned gamer boyfriend to do for me haha. Something that would take me hours and many lives, he figured out in 5 minutes every time.

The game gives you a few chances when you die before totally starting you back at a checkpoint. For someone like me who dies often- that was a real motivator to keep trying to get through hard parts. I knew I wasn't going to have to totally start over. But, the consequence is that each time you die you get a little slower and disoriented.

Toward the ending I started finding the storyline predictable. BUT BE SURE YOU WATCH TIL AFTER THE CREDITS.

(SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER FOR THE ENDING....) Before I knew it the game ended and it felt a bit anti-climatic. I like that we got to see what ARK Simon and Katherine were like. That was a cool little tid bit. But I was far more interested in what happened to Simon who was left behind.

You have to make a few moral choices throughout the game whether or not to put dying people out of their misery. It gets harder when faced with the possible last human.

I think the concept of the game- uploading our consciousness into a data form- really interesting and maybe something we'll see in the future.

Overall, if youre a seasoned gamer TOTALLY GO FOR THIS . I did it in 17 hours and I'm slow, so you good people will probably fly through it. For the casual gamers like me, you should still go for it. But maybe recruit your friends haha. I also earned all the achievements pretty easily.
