The charm wears off really fast. The artificial pixelation gets grating and enemies that just pop out of nowhere and end you are not so fun.

Bought for fifty cents. FIFTY CENTS.
The soundtrack alone would be worth that.
Only played solo so far, but it's fun -- I imagine with more players it's more fun.
Get it.

Nice graphics. Familiar concept. Monotonous design and sound. So far, not a deal-breaker, especially at the low price point. The bad controls are the killer, though.

This is a Meatboy-style platformer, though admittedly not designed to be as punishing. But for this style, the hitboxes are poorly sized, the wall jump detection is slow... facing the same level designs in SMB I could easily get through. Here, I get stopped cold at level 7 (if I don't slip off a wall earlier). When the brain and fingers can communicate but the game isn't listening, it's not challenge, it's rubbish.

* Jump scares. Seriously?
* Events with no discernable point/trigger.
* No discernable story.
* Randomly interacting again and again hoping it will trigger the game to go forward...

Lastly, what's with the PC head movement during the initial "waking up" animation? Is my head capable of 360 degree rotation?

If you liked Fez, you could like this. It's a short little bit of exploration, some ambient music... it's atmosphere, not a game. And it's free.

Another nice game by the guy behind Cave Story. It's a bit short, but it's FREE, and well worth the short time it takes to download. Better than many full price "games" for sure!

I'm a bit disappointed. The *vania genres are my favorite, and I'm almost always a sucker for this new-retro-pixel style. In this veing, the graphics were pleasing, the music was decent (though I expect it would have gotten quite monotonous, as it seemes to be a 20-30 second loop)... but where this game fell very flat very quickly was the control.
In a *vania, you really need good control, and this game isn't there. The fact that I encountered a gamebreaking bug with the jumping/sliding/falling code within 5 minutes of starting the game says that the developers released this too early, as well.

Pay no attention to the "hours played" here - I had to do this in Wine as the game doesn't (at the time I played it) run natively on Linux.
This game is a gem, especially considering the price and the size of the "team" that made it. Everything from the character design to the music, and even the battle mechanics, just works so well together to create a memorable set of experiences.
Don't YouTube it. Don't TVTrope it. Just get it, play it through a couple times (it'll be maybe 4 hours off your life, but it'll be worth it).

As many people have said before me, I loved Beat Hazard. Still do. It took me a bit to figure out why the community ships I was subscribing to weren't showing up - oh, right, I have to get a DLC to unlock the custom ships. So I'm being charged for fan-made content? Hmm...
I sucked it up and bought the DLC. Hey, the base game was good. Booted the game up with fresh DLC, looked for the ships I had downloaded... found them locked.

The fact that you're forced to complete these challenge missions in order to access the community content is just garbage, and for me, makes this DLC (which, if we're honest, is really just unlocking the ability to make/use custom ships) a total waste of money.

Maybe some day Cold Beam will do their loyal customers a favor and remove the "must play challenge missions" restriction from the DLC.
