I'm still not necessarily sold on the gameplay of point and click adventures. The pacing and engagement suffer. But as far as historical fiction goes, I've never seen anything in Pentiment's league. Maybe a Lets Play video would show me everything I'm appreciating here, but I want all games to try this hard to be from a place or from a time. I want to play from more than a solo protagonist's POV. I love to dwell in worlds far beyond what any single narrative warrants. This game gives me that. Along with a headache for its lack of fast travel.

This game has interesting thematic elements. The sound design is excellent. I even like the minimalist style. But it's irredeemably clunky in the way it switches from story element to story element. I hate being forced to control a character for 30 seconds with only one possible progression option. I'd rather watch a movie which is liable to be edited better or work in C story and other narrative elements.

I can see people, especially narrative crafters, enjoying it as a study, but the lack of traditional gameplay is glaring.

I didn't assume i'd enjoy a choose-your-own-adventure game, but this felt prescient. Zachtronics games never go on sale, and it's not necessarily worth upwards of $2/hour as a gaming experience, but as a literary work with a variety of perspectives to share, i recommend this game to anyone who might be interested in something with an extremely sophisticated meta-fictional context. I'm as sure as I can be that it has something to say to everyone.

This game didn't age particularly well. The point and click...and wait for dialog, and hunt for pixels gets old really quickly. The positions represented are somewhat interesting, but not anything we won't find ourselves familiar with in short order. I think i'd have lasted longer if there were a way to speed up interfacing with the environment, or if there weren't SO MANY illegal actions.
