Basically if you're into Sonic games I think this is a no brainer. I personally however cannot recommend this game.

I have previously played the start of Generations but couldn't get into it due to the art style. I don't think 3D works for 2D levels at all for both Sonic and Shadow.

I've seen a lot of reviews praising the art style but I cannot disagree more. I am a huge fan of the character of Shadow as well as the original game, but this campaign just looks hideous to me.

In terms of gameplay the 3D Shadow levels are definitely the most fun I've had playing a Sonic game and are very good, however the 2D levels felt very simple and again I can't stand how they look. Additionally the "Doom Morph" ability did not feel good to me at all, but I've seen some people saying it's "hard to master", so perhaps this is just a skill issue for me.

The whole Shadow campaign took 4 hours for me to complete. I have not 100% it, Running around a small hub world looking for collectibles is not a way I want to spend my time but I've seen some people praising this.

The story as well has nothing going on. There is one plot point and it's resolved in the game, you can't really expect more for such a short game I suppose. It's so strange to me to see people praising this game's writing. What writing? Truly, there is nothing going on here.

There's 4 boss fights in the Shadow campaign all of which are essentially impossible to lose with 1 or 2 mechanics going on. They require essentially nothing of the player. I've seen praise for these as well but they just felt lazy and disappointing to me.

In terms of environments there's 6 different ones for the whole of the Shadow campaign, one of which is from Forces (no one wants to see this) and the other is from Frontiers (Shadow wasn't even in this and it looks so hideous). Absolutely insane to have 33% of environments in such a short game be like this, when there's so many from the original "Shadow the Hedgehog" and SA2 alone.

Also when Shadow boosts he just flies around instead of skating, I truly don't understand this decision, skating is his thing.

It's a Sonic game so voice acting dips quite often too, but is generally better than I've seen before.

This game is another case of me just not understanding what it is Sonic fans enjoy. I don't know what has warranted these overwhelmingly positive reviews at the current time. Just seeing some decent Shadow levels for the first time in over a decade? I cannot see this appealing to someone who isn't caught in the weird vortex of Sonic obsession.

Sonic fans are wild man. You can serve them a plate of ♥♥♥♥ and they'll go wild and gobble it down because it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ instead of cow ♥♥♥♥ this time. Now this isn't to bash Sonic fans - we've simply been starved of anything good for decades (other than Sonic Mania, go play that instead).

Just a boring hack and slash mode. Other negative reviews say all that needs to be said.

Good game. Devs seem to care about it, but Sony are the publisher so be aware of some inevitable crisis.

Really amazing looking and sounding walking sim/light puzzle game.

However there are some combat sections, which I personally think really weaken the game and its atmosphere. I think this game would have been better solely as a walking sim, and not a hybrid shooter.

I had fun with this game. I think it does a lot of interesting things well, and feels nice to move around in and control.

That being said, it also does a lot of things horribly. The final 2 areas I played were nothing but agony and NEED to change (Abbey and Castle) in my opinion.

I do feel like no one tested this game, and sadly there are issues that I don't think can ever be changed.

But I did have fun, and I do recommend it. Even though in a few parts I really did NOT have fun (please god change the Castle).

Edit:

Upon reflection, playing some more, and thinking about going back to get achievements, I really don't want to play this game again. The combat is good but the constant hounding by infinitely spawning enemies as well as low enemy variety, cursed areas, and poor creature designs just ruins it for me. I really wanted to like this game, but I would not recommend going through the pain of such a huge chunk of this game.
