Hey there I was about to subscribe to the Hybrid powered ship and I saw your comment. The idea behind the gravity shield was to cause the objects fired to slow down either enough to lessen the damage caused or to slow the object enough so you could dodge it with split second timing. Which that last part is a little hard in Space Engineers.
