This is already one of my favorite games of all time. I started monster hunter with world, bounced off rise and sunbreak, and have returned now for wilds. The game slaps. The monster designs are fantastic, and the new monster unique monster skeleton and classification look and feel great.

There are two major complaints I've seen from other players about the game that I feel should be addressed.

For one, performance. This one is a real issue, and I have to say that even with midrange specs the game can struggle and framerates can be rough. If you have a low end device, I would not recommend the game as it stands right now, at least unless you understand the performance issues you are going to have.

The second is difficulty, and honestly, I don't think this is an actual problem. If you have never played a monster hunter game before, this will probably not feel easy. If you have experience with monster hunter games, that's probably why you might think it's easy. I fully expect free title updates and the inevitable DLC to up difficulty, but for now, the game feels perfect for a base monster hunter game. Nothing's too difficult yet, but many of the fights are dynamic and enjoyable.

Overall, with the performance caveat, I heavily recommend it. The new monsters are truly peak design. The open world and focus on investigations over the traditional monster hunter quest system feels like an incredibly natural fit to the monster hunter formula. The evolving environments are well-implemented and interesting, and make the game feel more alive than any monster hunter game previously.

Good game. Sometimes I starve. Sometimes I get killed by frogs. Sometimes I die to the shadow monsters, and sometimes I die to the monsters from the moon. Dying is fun, and this game lets you do it a lot.

This is maybe a unique review -- I am recommending it, but with caveats. This game *can* be very repetitious. It's not mindless repetition, though, as you'll still need to be engaged and checking on the events occurring, or you will quickly fail. That particular blend of repetitious can be good or bad.

However, if that's something you don't mind as much (I certainly am not bothered by that sort of repetition, as long as there's consistent progression). And there is, certainly, consistent progression. There is an insane amount of text and information in this game, and it's quite well orchestrated. There's hefty lovecraftian style to this game, with those small amount of constant dread -- will you be discovered? will you fall prey to your own emotions? can you feed your own desires? The game maintains these little nagging feelings that it's never too late to fail, even to the most mundane fates.

The game has the right feel, and I think that's its biggest success. I don't know that I would recommend buying all of the individual DLCs, but I don't think buying the game at full price is too big of an ask. I think I'd start with the base game, try it out, experiment for a bit, then pick up DLC if the game suits you.
(Note: I received all DLC for free due to buying this game at launch).

Kill monsters then harvest their skin, teeth, and claws so that you can dress up your cat in every outfit from a megaman cosplay to a samurai to a 70s disco outfit.

Positives:
Solid, engaging gameplay loop with lots of room for experimentation and improvement.
A number of different weapons, each with a completely unique playstyle.
As above: dress up your cat.

Negatives:
Trying to play through the main story with a friend is possibly the worst thought out multiplayer system I've ever seen. All players have to individually open the quest and run through it until they've seen the cutscenes, then all but one abandon and join the remaining person's quest. Why can we not just play as a group?
It's a timesink. Hunts can last up to 50 minutes, and while the first few monsters probably won't take that long, there will likely be some where you're hitting that time limit.
While almost all of the game can be played solo, much of the very endgame is not designed for that. Certain enemies are intended for full parties of 4 people (or even a full lobby of 16 people), which can be frustrating if you don't really want to play with random people and you don't have friends who want to spend 500 hours playing the game.

Overall, though, I do heartily recommend this game. I always have something to do, and they're consistently updating it still so there's more coming.

You say you like hard games. You've played Dark Souls, and that's your jam. You're looking through steam titles for something new to try, and this game shows up. Let me tell you: THIS IS NOT DARK SOULS.

I get it, you like hard games which rely on perfect timings and knowledge of the individual frames each move takes up. This isn't that sort of game. It's difficult, but it's strategically difficult. You will always have time to think over your decisions before you make them. This also means that in order to prevent there always being one perfect move, there is an element of RNG in this game. Some people enjoy it, some people hate it, some people use it as an excuse for losing. I hate to break it to you, but if you're losing you're probably making poor decisions. Just because you lowrolled an occultist heal and that caused a character to die doesn't mean you lost to RNG. Maybe you went for damage instead of throwing out a stun. Maybe you didn't bring any stuns. There are many decisions that go into every consequence in this game, and although you might think you are playing perfectly, you're probably not. I know I make mistakes quite often.

So take a moment on this game, give it a try. Remember: an element of RNG does not mean your decisions don't matter. If you're playing correctly, you'll pull through. But you will lose characters. You will be forced to explore in the dark, as your gold runs out and stresses run high.

If you think you play this game well but you're losing to RNG, recall these wise words: "Overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer"
