I was just a kid. A kid super excited about going on his first overnight campout. We drove to this place called Five Forks, somewhere in Virginia, hours away from home. I got out of the car as fast as I could and got my hiking pack and tent bag out of the trunk before almost tripping several times running to the campsite. I wish I had the vigor and eagerness to do my day-to-day routine nowadays as I did when I set up that tent. I don't know why. Maybe I was trying to prove something to my Dad that I wanted him to understand, yet didn't even realize myself. Whatever the case, my Dad went missing for a while as I gathered some firewood. A while later he returned, and we got our packs ready for a hike after camp was set up and set out down a long trail running adjacent to a creek until we had found sort of a clearing. There was a wooden box near the edge of this small field, and my Dad told me to open it up. I was so curious, like it was a gleaming birthday present. With a little trouble, I tipped the box back, revealing something that I still see today in the corners of my vision when I'm alone. Amid my silence, the only noise was the furious buzzing of flies devouring the putrid thing that was a face. A face just like mine, with clothes to match. It even had the bandages on its right forearm, like the ones I was nervously picking at. In its hands, or what was left of them, it held a second, smaller box. I wonder if it ever found out what was inside before, you know. I turned to my Dad, who faced me with the most most frightening expression I had ever seen. "Open it, it's for you", he said. Nervously I pried the lid open and looked inside. I will never forget as long as I live what lay inside. A Nintendo. Yeah, my Dad's the coolest.
