when i was a kid i was obsessed with "virtual aquarium" screensavers; the idea of being able to simulate an environment in my computer that i could watch and share the room with felt very tranquil and even a little festive. earthtongue perfectly captures that same childhood magic for me and expands on it. June's ability to breathe life into pixel critters is on full display here and it's mesmerizing to give the ecosystem the gentlest of nudges and watch the way that ripples out overtime. easy recommendation for anyone who's ever cared about a virtual pet or just likes to think about how everything is linked to its environment.

This game is really fun, but if you're not careful with your resources it can be kind of difficult to get started. Here are some tips for new players to help them build huge faerie settlements:

•Prune branches that are blocking out valuable sunlight as your main way of collecting wood.
•Make sure you store plenty of food for the winter if you want to stay productive!
•Use your sparkles to dig with fireworks every time you can. There are valuable resources deep underground!

Once you get the hang of things this game is a really relaxing way to kill an afternoon.

This game is really good and cute! It's a easy reccomendation for fans of combat puzzle games like You Must Build a Boat and Puzzle Quest.

This game was an unfortunate casualty of an over populated genre and ended up getting overlooked by most people last year, myself included. This is a shame because Environmental Station Alpha actually brings a lot to the table:

• Atmospheric sound design with rich sound effects and good music.
• A rather high difficulty level that will challenge veterans of the genre.
• A lot of boss fights, most of them well designed.
• Manuevering mechanics that are fun to master.

At the time of this review, my first playthrough took 7 hours with 84% item completion, and I can tell that squeezing out those final collectibles is going to be even more challenging than what I've already braved.

Secretly, this game is just a vehicle for Vlambeer's signature screenshake.

Undertale's greatest strength lies in its attention to detail. The narrative, and how the player interacts with it, have an absurd amount of granularity and are explored in ways that continue to surprise me. By combining this awareness with often charming (and disarming) writing, Toby Fox has created a very intimate game that is capable of evoking a wide range of emotions from the player. Never before have I been so invested in my friend's playthroughs of a game, both to see how their actions have impacted their own narrative, and to experience their reactions to Undertale's fascinating set pieces.

At its core, Hexcells is similar to minesweeper; but the well designed puzzles, layered gameplay mechanics, and relaxing aesthetic make this gem stand out.

Spelunky is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ brutal game. But that's okay, because Spelunky isn't actually about winning: it's about being perfectly fine one moment, and then getting ruthlessly murdered in the most unlikely and hilarious way a second later.

La-Mulana is one of the largest and least forgiving games in the Metroidvania genre. This version of the game adds some accessibility in the form of a better translation and quick saving at "grail points", but still suffers from obtuse puzzle solutions and not communicating what the player's next goal should be. The reason La-Mulana is so purposefully impenetrable is to encourage players to collaborate with one another; so even if you are looking for a challenge, don't be afraid to sneak a peek at a guide when you inevitably get stuck. All that being said, those who are willing to persevere through the game's labyrinths and traps will find an immensely satisfying experience.
