It's been almost 7 years since this game was released. It was good on day one but it's amazing in 2018. The constant patches do improve the experience both with content and QoL.
It's important to note taht the DLCs can be daunting for a first player but not all of them are essential, and you can start with some in a sale and the go all in.
One of the best parts of the game is the moddability. In fact I first got into the game thanks to the GoT one, it gets bigger by the patch. On the other hand, After the End its a great post-apocaliptic mod in which you pllay in a feudal north america. If you ever wanted to be King of Mexico or Emperor of California this is the one for you.
As a final thought I did got head first into the game, but I recommend watching some youtube videos to get the basics and then run wild
