RS2014 is back on sale! The included songs are not very noteworthy, but the core game can be purchased and played for hopefully the foreseeable future. Even without many songs the core lessons, Guitarcade minigames and Session Mode are all great exercises and places to learn. I thank all of my guitar knowledge to this game and while I'm not great, if given a tab and enough time to practice I can more often than not play any typical song. It demonstrates that almost anyone can play guitar if you stick with it and it does a great job of at least teaching the basics. If you're picking up this game for the first time, pay attention to upcoming DLC delistings as stuff leaves about every week, and have fun!

100 percent worth the wait. Arguably the best remake I've ever played, it's not perfect by any means but it captures the exact same fear and dread as I did playing the original for that first time. The attention to detail in every little thing is painstaking.

For PC specifically it does have a few technical problems, almost all Unreal Engine's fault, mostly stutter and random moments of very low FPS (shader compilation?). Crucially, if you target 30 FPS with higher settings like I did use an external program to cap the FPS, the inbuilt one felt really nauseating to me.

When this game was first announced, I was incredibly happy, as the franchise had all but been abandoned since around 2018 with the closing of Capcom Vancouver, leaving fans depressed as the main Capcom franchises like RE & Street Fighter stole the spotlight with successful games. I would've preferred a new game, but a remake is a safe bet, and I'm just happy to see Dead Rising again. Hang on, it's not a remake, it's a "Deluxe Remaster". That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard in my life.

Until I actually played it, then I realised "Deluxe Remaster" is the perfect way to describe this. It's very much the same game at it's core, but with completely redone visuals, necessary quality of life features that make the original hard to go back to, and a complete reshuffle of the voice cast, along with pretty much every line of dialogue fully voiced by someone. The ability to fast forward the in-game clock when at a save point is far more useful than you'd think, as there's more than a few times in the game where you don't really have any main objective to do for about twenty real life minutes. The autosave behaves just like in DR2:OtR, except you can exit the game and resume from it. Don't rely on it though, use manual saves, in fact they give you 20 slots, up from the 2016 remaster's 5 and 2006's NONE.

Escorting survivors, while certainly not stress-free by any means, is tremendously easier. The survivors have a simple affinity system where generally looking after them by giving them things (each have a set of favourite items too) and ensuring they don't die improves their morale, making them supposedly more competent and more effective if they have a weapon. I absolutely LOVE that the survivors will randomly tell you game tips, point out powerful weapon locations nearby, and tell you where PP stickers are, it's genuinely adorable. In fact escorting survivors is so much easier I ended up getting the Saint achievement to rescue basically all of them on my first run from Level 1. It's not free by any means though and there were some serious close calls when it came to time, you still need to know what you're doing.

Which leads nicely into the overall difficulty, which I'm happy with but a little unsatisfied too. The game is definitely easier in subtle ways, I'd say in a typical area there's about 20-30% less zombies clumped together, but you're going to be getting grabbed the same amount, don't worry. You also level up ridiculously fast. I ended up finishing the game at Level 47, but that was with saving everyone, and honestly? These changes are a good thing, because the original can feel like a frustrating stressful chore, and I mean that in the nicest way possible. I saw somewhere on the internet recently in an article or a video or something describe the original game as being made by aliens and you just have to accept it's strange frustrating mechanics to get anywhere (paraphrasing) and I couldn't agree more.

However, while these changes make the game easier, this game is still Dead Rising. It's still very weird and does dumb things like going from having loads of free time to being severely crunched, throwing boss fights at you that you couldn't have possibly known about, and toward the end, allowing you to be relentlessly stunlocked. Someone who finished the original is gonna have a lot of fun, but ultimately breeze through this. My fear is that someone who didn't play the original, who doesn't have the patience to sit through those Dead Risingisms™, is still going to give up just as fast and forever look at this franchise with an "eugh" face, and that makes me quite sad. How do I propose making it more palatable for newer players? I don't know, add an easy mode, where there's way more food around, and it does more, or the player has a flat damage reduction bonus. Why not make it like classic RE4 and have some dynamic difficulty going on, or make zombies drop actually good weapons sometimes (police dropping pistols do not count. pistols are not good.). Hell, even having like 3 autosaves instead of 1 could help people who severely messed up their time management. Just throwing out ideas here, it's not too late. Probably.

Anyway in lighter news, it looks and runs like a dream on PC. Defaulted to generally high settings on my painfully average system and it stuck to 1080p60, dropping frames exactly once in Wonderland Plaza, where it was only for about 3 seconds, and by about 5-10FPS. As a modern Capcom game it has a downright nauseating amount of graphics options and supports FSR, DLSS & XeSS like you'd hope. It also only crashed once, annoyingly right near the end, but the autosave stops any potential heartbreak. Unless it crashes while autosaving. There's also some noticeable pop-in, distractingly so in cutscenes, but I'm just going to assume that'll be patched.

As a final note, some very loud & annoying people on the internet complain that this game has been censored. The censorship in question? The game doesn't acknowledge when you take creep photos, a boss toward the end of the game was redesigned to not be weirdly and blatantly racist, and one line of dialogue from another boss was reworded to not mention the Vietnam war. That's literally it. The changes fit in very well and a new player would be none the wiser. Everything else is the same. If you're upset by these, I don't know what to say, you look at the internet too much and don't actually enjoy enough games.

Overall, if you played the original and liked it, you'll enjoy playing it again with this much more tolerable version. If you didn't like the original, you won't like this because it is still Dead Rising. If you haven't played the original, mentally prepare yourself for some jank, save in different slots and prepare to potentially have to restart the game over (with your levels at least) if you really mess up. But if you get through it, you might find a really charming game underneath it all, a game so wonderfully inconsistent in its tone you can't help but remember it years and years later, and you'll see why there are so many fans of this franchise. I hope we get a new game if this does well.

Not that far into the game but it's pretty great so far, you do get that feeling of being on a big adventure and that's a great sign. The comic aesthetic is cool and the environments are pleasing to the eyes. This is definitely a slow paced story focused game though, keep that in mind. The combat is a little clunky and seems a little easy but has some cool ideas with the shouts you use, and overall its kinda fun, if anything a nice distraction in between all the story. This game also does the one thing that the best story focused games do where you get to see what percentage of players made the choice you made through a comic book recap (which is drawn beautifully, I appreciate that extra effort), online stats always get a round of applause from me, I love when games like this do that.

Being story based, this game would fall apart if the characters were annoying or unlikable but they aren't, they're all quite distinct and are all voice acted really well. I especially enjoy the relationship system you have with the major characters, it's easy to understand but has more depth than "X will remember that", plus the emoji popup in the top left fits in neatly with the rest of the comic aesthetic. I will say it does have a little bit of that Fallout 4 problem where your dialogue options seem a bit vague, then you choose the option and say something different to what you expected, but when this does happen it usually doesn't cause anything catastrophic.

Just a completely ordinary, dare I say pretty good adventure/story game, it seems? I don't get what the fuss is about? Honestly all the outrage about this game from incredibly weird internet people with private profiles who were never going to play it in the first place makes me believe that developers should be able to opt out of having discussion pages on their games if they want, there are many other places on the internet that people can talk about a game, and it would save developers a lot of headaches.

I don't even care about cars or know anything about them, let alone driving, but despite all odds this game is consuming my life, the progression system and amount of stuff there is to do gives a steady stream of dopamine for many many hours, and I haven't even touched the LEGO DLC yet.
The UK setting is awesome and even the act of just driving the many different cars feels great whether they're high end or old and slow.
Just wish I had played it in its prime and not when the Festival Playlist seasons are about to stop :(
Get the ultimate edition before it delists in December!!!

This will easily be one of the best games to release this year, it's completely dripping with charm and just so, so funny. I had a smile on my face for pretty much the entire duration. Could not recommend more.

Absolutely incredible game, and it's such a good example of a well executed remake. I never finished the original but I loved the time I spent staring at its gorgeous late '90s CGI and its absolutely brutal puzzles. I didn't expect a remake to come out so soon and I'm happy to say it's a slam dunk; not only does it capture the magic of the original game but it makes its own changes while being respectful. I cannot get over just how good this game looks, seriously.

As if that wasn't enough, being able to experience the entire game in VR is the cherry on top. I was only able to play it like this for an hour but if you are a fan of the original, I cannot recommend it enough, it's easily the nicest looking VR game I've ever played (on the PC version at least).

Puzzles are still brutal here, though if you've beaten the original then you definitely have a great head start, but things have been changed around considerably, and it's probably a bit easier than the original. A notepad and a pen is still a must. The game does have a feature that lets you take screenshots of what you're looking at and refer to them from the pause menu, but you will still need to take some physical notes, and this does hurt the VR experience a little. I also hope a future update adds some slight puzzle randomisation like in the Myst remake to make repeat playthroughs more enticing, but the game might already randomise some elements for all I know. Still, those are minor nitpicks, if you love challenging puzzle games, or loved the original, you will have a delightful time here.

EDIT: I've since played the game a second time, fully in VR with the support of the notes I wrote the first time. The VR version is wonderful, though not without a few nitpicks. There's some visual artifacts randomly from time to time, and one time the feature that lets you skip stairs when using teleportation broke, sending me out of bounds and falling out of the map, which would have been very nauseating had I not been sat down. Also I feel like there are a decent amount of objects that should be interactable but aren't. The game does randomise the major puzzle solutions which is nice. Aside from those nitpicks, it's so, so good in VR. It's very immersive and really looks as gorgeous as the flatscreen version, albeit a little blurry.

I have nothing to say other than this is easily one of my favourite games, the atmosphere is unparalleled and the game can be equal parts charming and existentially terrifying. If you really get into it this is a game that you will never forget the experience of. Unbelievably peak.

This version of the game is a complete mess. Expect very poor performance, DLSS will be absolutely required, and be prepared for it to crash a lot. Frame generation makes the game into a stuttery nightmare and in order to properly see the ending you have to go into the original game's video settings and change Model Detail from High to Medium. I wasn't even allowed to see the damage it was doing because having MSI Afterburner open always seemed to cause an instant crash. More importantly on just a fundamental level the original game's art style and atmosphere has been completely gutted in exchange for "ooh shiny".

So why am I giving it a positive review?
It's free, and certainly a more interesting and playable tech demo than usual. Any excuse to play Portal again is a more than welcome one.

This game is absolutely phenomenal, and easily one of the best I've ever played.

It made me go from just knowing what Tetris was, and not really seeing a lasting appeal, to being absolutely obsessed with the game and realising just how well designed it is.
It's not perfect and it won't click with everyone, one issue is it can have really hard difficulty spikes when you're starting out and haven't developed a decent amount of speed, but even after countless replays the journey mode still gives me goosebumps, it's so unbelievably immersive. On top of everything the experience is only made greater if you have a VR headset.

In terms of gameplay, it's modern guideline Tetris. If you're okay with that, you won't have any issues, but if you're a boomer and prefer classic, you can adjust some settings to make the experience a bit harder, such as going down to a 1 piece preview and disabling the hold feature. If the visuals are a bit too much you can also change the piece colours to a traditional colour scheme, but you really shouldn't use this for your first time playing journey mode if you can help it. Also for boomers you can play a very faithful version of NES Tetris as one of the effect modes which is brutal but a fun challenge. Took me a while to mention but the Zone mechanic added in the journey mode is such a simple yet deep and incredibly fun to use addition and is just what the game needs to feel truly fresh.

Absolute must play if you even slightly like Tetris. The price may seem a bit steep, but if it clicks for you like it did for me then it will be worth every single penny.
