I've got some very mixed feelings about this game. On the one hand, I'm a story junkie, and the game falls pretty flat in that regard. The plot is very thin, with your standard "bring peace to the post-apocalyptic wasteland" being conveyed very dispassionately, with no real feeling of urgency, and the main villains feel like nonentities with how little they actually DO in the game. The other elements of storytelling don't fare very well either. The characters are so flat and underdeveloped that they barely qualify as characters - most of them are just information posts with faces. Likewise, the setting is supposedly post-apocalyptic, but it barely feels that way at all - the setting is so gameified, and the NPCs are so flat and dispassionate, that the apocalypse that the game is centred around almost feels like it was just a minor inconvenience for civilisation.

On the other hand, there's definitely something addictive about this one. Combat feels very satisfying, and is intense, fast-paced and challenging without being overwhelming; and the game does a nice job of varying the types of enemies and the ways in which they can be fought. The visuals are, for the time, also very well done, really conveying the feeling of a rusty, filthy, sand-coated world. Honestly, the visuals conveyed that post-apocalyptic feeling a lot more strongly than the actual storytelling did.

On the whole, if you're into light-hearted, actiony open world games and don't mind strong plot being a secondary concern to addictive gameplay, you could do worse than this. I'd personally wait for a sale, though.

If you want a game that's very similar while telling a stronger story, being a bit grittier, and actually conveying the feeling of post-apocalyptic hardship, though, I'd recommend the Mad Max game instead.

The atmosphere of this game is tremendously well-executed. Much like Cloak and Dagger's earlier game, A Date in the Park, this game presents a series of largely mundane events in such a way that they feel deeply sinister and unsettling for no easily explainable reason. So few games manage to pull off an air of mystery and uncertainty the way this game does, and it's so refreshing to play something that feels genuinely frightening purely through atmosphere, without ever resorting to gratuitously grotesque imagery or jumpscares.

I don't often play games that genuinely keep me tense and engaged all the way through; but this has got to be one of them. This is modern, internet-age horror done right, and it evokes way more atmosphere and tension than you'd expect from its simple interface. And it's all wrapped up in a statement about the role that smartphones and social media play in our modern lives that's genuine without being preachy.

It's not perfect, of course - the most obvious flaw being some VERY hit-or-miss voice acting - but the flaws rarely inhibit the overall experience. On the whole, this is a must for horror fans, and I really can't wait to see what these devs do next.

Highly functional and engaging (if slightly simplified) JRPG-style combat and gameplay, and a nicely cyberpunk-esque, steely-grey visual aesthetic are combined with a predictable plot, paper-thin characters, and writing that's just corny enough to be charming.

If this was a game from an established developer or group, it would be absolutely awful; but as an early outing from a new, up-and-coming gamemaker just dipping his toes in the water, it's a decent, and fairly priced, bit of cyberpunk RPG fun.

Man, games like this really make me wish Steam had a more nuanced rating system than "thumbs up" and "thumbs down".

SPOILER WARNING

If there's any major issues I have with the game, besides the obvious flaws I mentioned, it would likely be that the final choice is quite blatantly ripped off from the first Deus Ex game. It's shameless, really. Not like it isn't set up, and it isn't identical in every single sense; but it's close enough to be very obvious. That's...a major one.

There's a ton of flaws here - uneven audio quality and occassional over-the-topness being the most obvious - but the palpable atmosphere and emotional intensity that this game evokes, chiefly through its distinctive art and music, are enough to overcome them, and bring together a flawed, but brilliantly unique piece of surreal horror.

While the central themes and the nods to Nineteen Eighty-Four can get a little heavy-handed at times, this is generally a very intriguing, effectively exciting bit of narrative-driven gaming, ideal for anyone with an interest in the theme of governmental control and online privacy.

Brief, and simple, and maybe slightly over-the-top in parts; but nonetheless, a game that, for its budget, is executed well, presenting a powerful atmosphere that, for the most part, strongly achieves the game's central goal of injecting an atmosphere of oddness and menace into a seemingly innocuous everyday situation - that is, as long as you approach the game knowing as little as possible. The FMV style, while not for everyone, is nostalgic and serves the atmosphere well; and while the ending isn't what I'd have gone for, the overall experience is well executed.

It's a simple premise, a brief experience, and it's not the first game to attempt a twist of this variety; but still, it's a twist that'll probably hit you pretty hard once you realise it. Games like this serve to prove just how a creatively-minded creator can twist the gaming medium itself.
