I don't know how I got this? It just came out, but I don't think I bought it. Like I have been super busy and haven't been able to play Stellaris in a hot minute. I will update this review as soon as I play the new DLC; it looks sick.

The game is fun but has more bugs than actual gameplay features. In a paradox-esque choice of action they've released an unfinished game, prioritized DLCs for quick cash, and failed to elevate the base game in the TWO AND A HALF YEARS since it was released. I'd have many more hours in the game if I could actually play it.

Good game, needs some patching to fix bugs and re-balance values.

Note to the Devs - When you have a revolt and your revolt wins (to keep or preserve and old law or status quo) it gives you a game over. This doesn't make sense and kind of kills the vibe.

Military in the game is kind of clunky. Not only is there the issue posted above, but it just doesn't feel good. When someone has +90 to win with twice as many troops at twice the value per unit it feels bad to 22(them) vs 3(you) and to lose each individual battle. Moving troops is needlessly difficult. Military access not existing means you can only fight on your (and your vassal's) neighbors and those with ocean borders. I have had a number of enemies attack me only to not be able to move their troops meaning we've bot sat in a war doing nothing for 30 minutes. We then white-peaced without a battle each time.

Flavor between governments is also heavily lacking. Most nations (and nation types) feel the same. While there are some tangible differences, most nations feels the same.

Overall the game is good and I think it is a worthwhile pickup. Some work needs to be done, but I look forward to the coming patches and DLC.

Stellaris is not like any other Paradox game I have played before. It has quickly risen to be one of my favorite Grand Strategy game. I has fewer technical issues and smoother game play than similar titles. I would recommend this game to anyone looking to get into Grand Strategy games but also to veterans of the genre who are growing board with their current main games.

Species
- A main point in the game is your primary species. The traits that you assign them at the beginning of the game (and later through gene editing) will help inform your play style in the game. By swapping traits in each game you can really help keep the game fresh.

Origin
- When starting the game you may choose an Origin. These Origins give you unique starts, abilities, events, resources, and many other unique effects. Want to start as a vassal (Vassals in this game are far more autonomous than other games. If you are familiar with CK2 they act like permanent tributary states that you can integrate.) to a fallen empire? Want a Space Dragon to reside in your home and defend your people? Want to start on a world so perfect it can't be real? You can do all of this and more through Origins. This combined with government type, traits, and ethics will set up the base of your game.

Ethics
- Ethics limit and expand your game play options. A pacifist probably won't be declaring wars. A spiritualist will probably start with temples and eventually consecrate entire planets. At game start you can select 3 Ethics options (unless you are a one-mind like certain robots or hive minds). Each type of ethics (except the one-mind) can have up to two points put into it. You could put two points into one type of ethic and one in another, or three in all different trees. Most ethics are mutually exclusive to one other ethical branch, that means you can't play a Spiritualist and Materialist at the same time.

Government Types
- There are multiple government types that greatly alter the game and how you play it. The basic government types are things like Imperial - Oligarchy - Democracy and the like. These mean that elections or other events change your leader. They give some unique bonuses but they are the most mundane (not in a bad way but rather they are the basic game play type.) Megacorps are galactic corporations that can open Branch Offices on other planets. If you pick a government trait (I will not be writing an overview for government traits as they are basically species traits but for your government that modify how your government plays) called Criminal Enterprise you can open Branch Offices without commercial pacts. People will hate you for this but you will be so wealthy that they cannot stop you in their weekend state. Beyond a criminal corporation you could be a Megachurch and spread your gospel throughout the galaxy. You could operate as a normal Megacorp and use Capitalism to become the wealthiest state in the game. Hive minds also give unique game play. Hive minds have leaders that rule for the entire game duration. They could be driven assimilators who integrate any "xeno" they encounter, exterminators who wish to kill all others, or even a machine intelligence. They are a lot of fun but they have a more limited diplomacy.

The game has so much more than what I have listed above. These are just a few items that you want to consider before your game even starts. With the fact that Stellaris is not displaying a fixed history but rather something that could be, there are near-infinite different ways you can play the game. I only have one single critique about Stellaris that really impacts my enjoyment. Stellaris has a number of optimized play styles that are just flat out stronger than others. I would love to see more balance between these options, or even just a way to play tall better so that you are not constantly having to engage with massive bellicose empires. I put my critique at the end because I want to draw specific attention to what I am about to say next. As someone who has upwards of 10,000 hours across grand strategy games, Stellaris is by far one of the best and it is a contender for my favorite game. The only reason I do not have more hours currently in the game is because I have been busy with school and life. When I have more free time, I plan on putting it into this game. If you were already considering purchasing and playing Stellaris, I hope you do.

It is a fun game. I think it is more fun with friends than solo. I would suggest using the Wiki to learn about the different items. Game isn't overly hard or easy. Pet the frog 5 times.

I feel like this game gets much criticism not for its quality but rather the quality of its predecessor. When we constantly compare Civ VI to Civ V of course it will never look as good as Civ V was a polished game with a lot of DLC and a cult following. As it's own game Civ VI is fun. The graphics are good and they make it nicer for more casual players. The environmental mechanics add a unique player vs world mechanic instead of player vs. ai which the game lacked. I hope to see more DLC in the future that revamp some of the districts and their buildings. The game is good and I recommend it to anyone that enjoys grand strategy games.

Making this to update my original review from 60 hours several years ago.
Larian, you've done it. This is by far the best game you've ever created. I had good expectations from Dos 1, great expectations from Dos 2, and now from BG3 the expectations have become perilously high. I don't know how you will top this game. Each and every act- each and every quest- you continued to blow me away. I cannot recommend this game enough to those who enjoy games like DOS or other TTRPG-likes. If you even think you *MIGHT like this game - please give it a shot. Some of the best ~300 hours I've put into a game so far.

They STILL haven't released republics or secret societies. 500 hours at the time of this update (original review was positive at around ~9/10 hours of playtime) and I usually get bored after an hour or so in single player. It is just lacks a diversity of player experience, and for a game I've spent this much money on (in DLC) it just doesn't feel complete.

Reseña de acceso anticipado
The are massive Zerg clans that stop the little players from doing well. They wave off complaints and although they address them the Devs backhandedly say "We've done this to fix x problem but you're still complaining so I guess we can do y." Clan leaders monopolize Tablet use and often times it feels like you are their slave. You either slave for the large clan or are stomped beneath their boot. People in game are openly racist although the Chinese Zergs seem to provoke this. The game is decent but the community is toxic. The community is the number one thing holding this game back.
