I'm myself pretty sceptical about Steam and the whole "licensing to use" concept (aka "not "owning" games anymore but just buying access) of playing games, wich is why i also buy a lot from GoG! ;-)
We decide where to put our money, and the companies simply follow that stream - as long it's profitable for them - development teams also cost money, and not exactly cheap! ;-)
the issue with conspiracy theories is, you can't proove them wrong - i think valve cut Win7 simply because it takes development effort to maintain and the industry is simply shifting towards win10 - also valve is also highly encouraging and working on Linux Gaming, so even if they somehow got "ordered" to by the paranoia agencies, they at least do their part in offering real alternatives!
