Soundart is another VR rhythm game where you hit blocks. The gimmick of this one is the use of the 'petal' interface- you're more hitting petals in time of when the blocks cross them than hitting the blocks themselves. I assure you it makes sense in context. It gives you the ability to play to your own music, which has its advantages, but also its drawbacks- generated maps just aren't as good as curated maps. It's something people complain about endlessly when it comes to Beat Saber, but in general the maps there- both official and user made- are better.

Anyway, it's a good game, buuuut... it needs several quality of life improvements.

- Needs the ability to rotate the play area
- Needs a 'play all' button so it can play through an album with the same settings without returning to the music select screen
- Playing a preview of the song while selecting makes sense but just playing from the beginning is just annoying as you end up hearing the first fifteen seconds of the song twice back to back. Please either make it a random chunk in the middle or make it togglable
- The leaderboards are global rather than song specific (as it is in Audiosurf) which seems pointless, as the top scorer is most likely the person who played the longest song
- Needs at least local high scores for specific songs so I know if I did better than the last time I played any one song
- I'm unsure as to the point of 'dance mode'
- I don't understand the scoring system, how much is a block worth? Does the combo matter?
- I can play my own music, great! However, not enough formats are supported. I understand not supporting m4p, but given the success of Bandcamp, flac at least needs support
- The 'song amplitude' semicircle at the bottom of the display seems unnecessary

While it seems like I don't like the game... I really do, honest! The issues I have with it aren't game ruining and I've had fun playing it so far.

OK so I'm going to split this review into two parts: one for the game itself and one for the RTX mod

GAME: I enjoyed it far more than I thought I would. Like Quake 4, this became one of those games that I really didn't like at first but liked more as I went along. The level design got better as the game went on, and as I got the hang of the way the AI and weapons worked it really flowed and I liked it. I don't think I've ever used the grenade launcher in a game as much as I did in this one. Its use of mission objectives made the levels feel like they had purpose, though sometimes there were times when I had a 'where the ♥♥♥♥ do I go?" issue. Oh well.

Ultimately though it's rather generic. While the gunplay was enjoyable it didn't really contribute much interesting or unique (its real impact in gaming was its multiplayer, but this is a review of the campaign). This was reflected by how it was promoted at the time- check out how the lighting works! It looks great! Also enemies can duck. While it was certainly a step forwards in terms of graphics, it was very much a tech demo for the latest idTech engine. And speaking of tech demos...

RTX- it seems fitting this game was used as a tech demo for the RTX GPUs, Using a game that was pushed hard on the grounds of its dynamic lighting, using it to promote RTX cards really makes sense. It looks great! And meh. At the same time. I loved the way shadows and coloured lighting interacted with the world. Changing the skybox and time of day at whim was interesting if just a novelty. However it came at a cost- there was an appeal to the look of the original game. It was slightly darker and everything felt like it had a layer of grime on it. With the RTX graphics the textures looked slightly more glossy which caused it to lose a 'lived in' feel.

Also what happens when you finish the game was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Come on, even Wolfenstein 3D had a more satisfying ending, they could have tried harder. Did they run out of time?

This game has confirmed exactly what I expected: that I suck at bowling in VR as much as I do in real life.

A fun minigame, with a few different modes to keep things interesting. Unlockable skins give a sense of progression.

A very good platformer, The graphics are unique but don't get tiring, the controls are intuitive, and the 'colour energy' gimmick is well executed. It's a pity it can't be bought any more, huh.

OK this is the third time I've reviewed this game and I swear it's the last. The first two times were at the conclusion of the first and second chapters and now that I've finished the third and final chapter... whew, what a great game! Itburn should be proud of what's been accomplished here.

--- basic stuff about the game part ---

Nightmare Reaper is a roguelike where you play an asylum patient who fights demons in her dreams. Backstory comes in the form of notes by her doctor that discuss her life and who she is. However this is very much a gameplay first game, where 99% of the time you're in randomly generated levels (constructed out of pre-made rooms) fighting a large array of monsters. The game is constructed of many worlds each of which you need to complete three levels to proceed to the next one. Death means that you have to redo that one particular level until you complete it. Levels end with completion bonuses as well as additional bonuses for 100% kills, secrets, treasure.

It also comes with minigames, one of which is a platformer where you spend gold collected in the game on upgrades for your character. Everything from player speed, health, and value of weapons can be upgraded here. There are two more that also can upgrade your character, but since only beta access people can play it I'll hold off on spoiling what they're all about.

--- and my thoughts ---

Really impressive. The level design gets more interesting and complex as the game goes on, with chapter 3 taking advantage of a lot of verticality. The level design gets far more abstract as well, with The Empty being amazing. Each chapter brings new environments that keep the game feeling fresh, and new challenge rooms to frustrate :-p There's a lot of content here, from the vast array of weapons to the many possible level configurations, it's great. Adding a horde mode was a great idea, and using the upgraded grappling hook to kite around them is always fun. Until an enemy shocks me and I can't use it. Bleg.

Chapter 3 also introduced the concept of returning to one particular level and opening it up a little more each time. I won't go into specifics- it's far more interesting to experience it firsthand- but it was an interesting thing to add that enhanced the experience.

The additional stuff on top of the regular game is a good touch. Exploring the hospital made for a good breather between levels and I enjoy the minigames... for the most part. To be honest three minigames is one too many, the jade tree minigame I'm not very fond of and would have preferred the stuff you buy there to be smooshed into the topaz tree. But oh well.

Ultimately what I enjoy is that it's a fun, action filled game. Running through the levels and blasting enemies with an array of all sorts of weapons is just heaps of fun. I'm really looking forward to playing NG+ with the first save slot, and seeing if I can get the other ending with save slot 2. Here's hoping.

As an aside, I don't think Itburn has slept in several weeks, they're always on the Discord answering questions and taking info on bugs that need to be squashed.

An enjoyable game. It takes full advantage of it being on a computer by making a lot of the things to find reliant on interactable objects. The art style is fun and it looks like a lot of effort was put into making ti distinctive and interesting. It looks like a lot of pencil miles were expended drawing all those characters and objects!

It's... all right. I got it pretty cheap ($8) and it provided a couple of hours of silly fun. There's a bit of replay value when it comes to trying to get the achievements, but now that I 100%ed them, I'd say I will never play this again because I've exhausted what I can get out of it.
