So let me give you a bit of advice. I have played over 200 hours of this game and honestly that it considered very little. I have enjoyed every second of it.

The magnificent single player is only complemented with the insane modding community. If you ever get tired of the standard civs or maps, there are countless of other usre created civs, maps, and tweaks to the game that keep this game going. Fan of Game of Thrones?, there's a mod for that. Lord of the Rings?, but of course. Is your home country not included in the vanilla civs?, there's a mod that probably adds it in. I do give you a fair warning saying that mosts mods require the Brave New World and Gods and Kings expansion pack. The two mods are completely worth it and change the game in very smart ways. You can have fun with the vanilla, un-expansioned version of the game, but I do believe that the expansions increase your enjoyment of the game greatly. In any case, you can probably pick up the complete edition of the game during a steam sale for no more than around 20$. the game doesn't have a campaign per say, but the singleplayer nevertheless feels complete, with scenarios and random maps available.

Multiplayer is even more of a blast than singleplayer. Though it does not support mods, the fact that you can have hours and hours of fun with your friends on such a diverse and relatively random game. Skypin g with your pals as you build up your civ and plot to destroy your enemy empires is insanely satisfying. You can never predict what an actual player will do compared to the AI. This is probably the reason for which I have spent the vast majority of my time on multiplayer.

Civ 5 insn't a game for every one. If you're one for fast paced action, this isn't for you. This game is of the strategy genre, turn-based strategy to be precise. If you're a guy who likes Real Time Strategy games such as Starcraft or Age of Empires, this may not be the game for you. This game is played one turn at a time, where everything you do can have a signifcant impact on the late game. You can plan pretty much everything to great detail but are always challenged by what happens on the map. If you like taking your time and planning everything meticulously than this is definitely a game for you. Fair warning, games can last up to hours even days.

Briefly, I do suggest to buy tgis game and give it a 9/10. Not a perfect score, for tha AI in singleplayer would need a bit of fine tuning and because multiplayer definitely needs mod support. Also, playing the game without expansions is a bit less interesting, but as I said, Lord Gaben showers us with sales.
