Rating a game like Ironclads 2: Caroline Islands War 1885 is somewhat harder than some would think. Totem Games tends to cringe when people call the game a wargame. Developers likes to think of this game as more of a simulation title rather than a wargame. In some respects they is right.

As a game though this is a very good one, one that anyone interested in naval warfare should look at. In fact, this game would make an excellent follow on for that title.

The game is not a fast paced game. Yes, you can speed up the time in the game, in fact, you will have to if you want to play the game at all, but even so this is a slow paced game and the action fulfils itself over time. If you want a quick bang bang style game then this isn’t it. The ships of the time were notoriously inaccurate in their firing and in this game it is evident. You will fire dozens of shots at an enemy ship before you will finally sink it. Yes, there may be a lucky shot but don’t count on it.

If you are even remotely interested in naval warfare from the age of steam then this is a very good game to check out. The game isn’t perfect, the interface can be frustrating to newbies but the game is fun, and engrossing.

In the end I recommend the game.

This is the third scenario of Ironclads 2, I played at all of them and have to say each scenario is different. Civil War feels very tensive because you have limit time to realize your advantage (when you have it or wait for it trying not to lose a fleet) otherwise when opponent gets advantage, you can lose the game. Pacific gives you not chanse to lose a ship because each side of the conflict can’t produce armored ships at all, so you have to be very careful.


And now we have a Boshin War, Japanese Civil War with interesting alignment of forces, Imperial forces have army but not powerful fleet, Shogunate has a more powerful fleet but almost no army. I played Shogunate and started from destroying imperial fleet, in first battle using manual artillery mode (have to say with 5-6 guns battery it works very well) I was able to deal damage from far distances and at the end of hour 3 armored transports of imperial fleet was on the button of the ocean. Great! Other game time was tense to, but good start gave me a time to capture enough cities for 81% success rate.


What can I say, game still needs a lot of improvements, for example sometimes you forgetting that your ship is ready to action - better show it somehow. Infantry part of the game could be better, right now it works like strategic element of gameplay but has lack of tactics. Even with that it plays very fast and interesting … of course when you already understand what you need to do and how to move and build.

Well made RPG, simple and interesting one, with a good story keeps you always in action. Have no complains about battle system, it suits game perfect, feels even better than Dragon Age melee (of course magic of Dragon Age is incredible). It was created like a game about dwarves and if feels like that, killing orcs and listening story, what better you can do?

No room for complain, game is better than Human Revolution and works well enough for me, sometimes frame rate drops but only for expensive levels.

The game is not bad, but it's made from Civ 5 and made not well enough to play in this mode. Better keep pplaying in Civ 5.

Game can be tough! I lost my only ironclad playing for Peru on 10 turn. I was trying to repair by ship been under fire, when I was able to stop machines to balance water pomp it was too late. I'll try to play without it but I think I lost the game ...

Game play on tactical map much faster and interesting, but luck of ship not gives you a taste of the naval battle system in full its power, I think. But still good enough!

Best game in Civilization series. You have to play with all expantions off course. You must play it!

Battle system is finally done well, skills of team's members and weapons and spells is good balanced. Story is great as allways. If you like prevous games, this one is better.
