Cultist Simulator's core driving tension is the suspension between frustration and success. This does not mean that anyone who bouces off it needs to "get good", or that anyone burned out by is "doing it wrong." Absolutely not. I think that what it does mean though is that this game is very risky; very swingy as an experience; has within it the chance to be its own worst enemy and to turn people off in a big and unfun way, and it remains to be seen how it develops over time. I hope the dev team finds a way to make it less opaque and exhausting without losing the learning curve and challenge that keeps this from becoming nothing more than a glorified mobile game. Otherwise, I can see it gaining a rep for being an unfun, frustrating, and arbitrary grind, which I think would be a crying shame.

The writing, worldbuilding, cosmology, and art direction is excellent.

The game loop of learning, overcoming, exploring, and disovering as one's system mastery grows through play is INCREDIBLE.

The frustration one faces as one dies again to a gameplay situation that *seems* to have no solution and *seems* to have even no glimmering of what to do differently this time is EXCRUCIATING.

The only question for every player is which of these two options happens to win out, playthrough after playthrough.

I can't help but feel that I've been lucky so far, in that I'm still more energized than frustrated. It doesn't feel good that I feel lucky in this, mind you -- I *should* feel good about how the game has presented its challenges and learning opportunities, and how I've internalized them. I don't know what the devs can do about this, but it definitely means that though I recommend this game, I have to do so with a pretty major caveat: don't buy it unless you're willing to take the very real chance it'll burn you out and turn you off, 10-12 hours into play.

This game satisfies my inner thirteen year old like no other. Finally, I get to be a Space Marine, and the 40k flavour is absolutely spot on.
