Nothing but praise. The way the game allows constant re-speccing / replacing of towers, upgrades etc. (both ingame as well as in the upgrade tree) with no drawback / cost is refreshing, as well as challenging. The game doesn't just offer you this ability to give you the option, but rather pushes you to constantly adapt to the mission and situation at hand.

Out of the game, you're deciding between upgrades (both passive upgrades to your ship / core [your enemy's goal] as well as "technology" upgrades that upgrade your towers, changing them into different types of towers, or weapons for your ship (and upgrades to those) that are most suitable for that level. Ingame, you're constantly having to replace towers between waves to adapt to the new enemy paths that open up and / or new enemy spawnpoints that appear. Levels often have entire flanks open up around the core that you need to plan an effective defense for when the level starts opening up more, various cardinal directions around the core having whole new parts of the level appearing as waves progress and the situation gets more and more hectic.

About that last bit - the game gets very intense at times and chaotic, and it's an absolute blast! You're constantly having to check your minimap to stay abreast of current developments around your towers and enemy movement. Whenever there's some down time (due to towers handling smaller numbers of weaker enemies), you're flying around in "ghost mode", picking up supplies so that you can build more towers (which you do in ghost mode, when you're invincible and can move somewhat faster than outside of it). You're often hecticly building a few extra towers mid-wave, as you're flying around trying to make sure nothing gets to your core, which means having to pay attention to when you need to bring your own ship weapons to bear.

In local coop, this game is amazingly fun!!! I played this a bunch with a buddy and we both agreed that it's a prime example of a fun coop exprience. Supplies must be picked up by each player individually and accrue per player, which allows construction of more towers - but either player can sell, upgrade or move any towers on the field, meaning you can very quickly share resources; the open-ended "here's tools, go accomplish stuff" mentality carries over to how coop play is handled, as well. Coop play = lots of communication, backing each other up or taking turns watching certain areas, constantly having one fire while the other collects supplies or builds another tower, or connects another laser fence to block or impede enemy movement. A huge part of the game is about identifying enemy routes and using towers to block those off. Towers can be connected to one another by a laser fence, which means you can build all sorts of constructions to delay and slow down the enemy in all manner of different ways. This is usually done inbetween waves (where you have as much time as you want to plan and build - but taking longer does reduce your final score). However, there's another way to block routes, and it's a very, very cool concept, executed perfectly - destructible environments.

Everything in the level can be, well, levelled. But the interesting bit comes when you start using a Dark Matter charge shot to create a gravity well and destroy tall buildings, yanking them over as they crumble where you shot them. Now, I only mention that weapon because it's the most effective and sure-fire way of having a building fall in the direction you want it to. That's right - buildings have actual physics applied to them as they topple. It makes for some very interesting and rewarding play when you figure out a way to route enemies way, way around the level, or consolidate streams of them into a few bundles you can more easily unload a lot of damage on with either a lot of towers or your ship's weapons, using destructible terrain to do so.

Then there's the bosses. Yeah, there are big as hell bosses with some creative and quite badass looking design on them that lumber through levels, often toppling buildings as they go and unloading quite some damage towards your ship. They'll crush towers they step on, too, necessitating some quick changes in tower layout before tackling them in the final wave of a level.

All in all, this game is a very interesting take on the tower defense genre (with a twin stick shooter tossed in) that's really fun to play and challenging in a fair manner, that necessitates quick reflexes as much as intelligent planning, and one I can heartily recommend to anyone looking for a really, really fun time with a friend :)

Amazing game. Shaping up very nicely over time. The devs have a good idea of their plan of action, and what their goals are, and are highly responsive to the community, who are themselves mostly mature, fun people.

Alpha 10 is round the corner, and will bring new animations, a new inventory system that will add a lot of functionality to vehicles (stuff like multiple ammo types) and players (stuff like switching between ammo types on an underslung grenade launcher, or rocket launcher, without having to fully stow your weapon). Preliminary modding support has also been added, and people are already making mods!

The future looks very good :)
