More and more parents nowadays are choosing to adopt practice children. No parent wants to accidentally kill their own kid, but many can live with accidentally killing an adopted kid. So having the adopted kid first allows you to test-parent a child you don't love that much. It gives the parents the opportunity to develop a parenting style by being able to experiment without putting your REAL children at risk.

I actually used to have a test-kid before my daughter was born. And gosh am I glad I did!! The test kid allowed me to learn the valuable lesson that electric toasters shouldn't be kept near the bathtub when you're bathing a toddler. I'm so glad I was able to learn that lesson without having to put anyone that I actually cared about at risk. Now I keep the toaster on the wet counter near the sink whenever I'm bathing my daughter. And I sleep better at night knowing she's safe.
