I bought this game twice. First time, I put in a refund request because the game said a Sony account was required, but friends told me they could play without one.

Thumbs up for Sony changing policy. They heard our feedback, so they get my review flipped.

Really just not impressed with the game.

I originally got it in early access from Twitch hype and had some fun. I'm revisiting the game since the campaign was released and just played it a few hours. The difficulty is hard, I already knew that from survival, but having to do the same mission 6-7+ times just to memorize the zombie spawns is a pain (too early to get enough wood resources to wall off my city). I'm also too noob to know how to beat a swarm on the second easiest difficulty (I initially played the maps on "Challenging", middle difficulty).

I get more base development from other RTS games, especially Civilization (4X game) and better combat from WarCraft 3. So I'm not sure where this game and the difficulty curve fits in with my options.

Bottom line, would I recommend this to a friend? No, there are better RTS and better 4X options for your time.

It's pretty fun and it really didn't betray the Alien fanbase, and for that, it gets a big thumbs up.

Overall, this continues the trend of Alien games being subpar. Aside from Isolation and some AVP titles, Alien games are rarely polished, well made, and fleshed out with features.

While fun to play, having no text or voice communication with teammates immediately screams "console port" where there's likely a persistent open mic setting.

Environment, classes, perks/skills, weapons, and enemies were all enjoyable. You may get a bigger kick from just reading the Alien novels as I have been. I just finished the May 2022 release, 'Alien: Colony War' and it was phenomenal. This game also had a novel release, 'Aliens: Infiltrator' which was also a very enjoyable read!

Bottom line, would I recommend this to a friend? Yes, probably on sale, because while it is fun to play, lacking support on the social & match making aspect of the game severely restricts replayability.

The Game
Metro Exodus has been long awaited by the Steam community after we had to wait a year to play on our platform of choice.
Within minutes you're exploring the surface of world, where this game takes place. Each chapter or level is an open world set in a different topographical region (desert, forest, winter, etc). The levels are wide-open to explore and achievements are spread throughout the region based on your exploration (lots of goodies to find and baddies to fight!).

I really went to town exploring the first region, turning over every nook and cranny, finding ways to bounce around objects and jump to places I don't think they wanted me to get to. The novelty of the open world wore off quickly, however, and I found myself blasting through the future levels trying to progress the story. The open world felt like filler to extend the game and not rewarding for the tediousness needed to explore each region.

Almost every encounter has side paths and hidden loot for the keen eye. You're given the option between stealth and raw firepower in almost every instance. I don't care much for stealth games in general, so I used my "leet" skills to end fights quickly via headshots. Honestly, mowing down enemy after enemy was fairly satisfying, however there were many instances where enemies shot me through cover or shot through their own cover, so the gun fights could be a crap shoot at times.

The game took me approx 19 hours to complete and I experienced about a half dozen deaths. And... about half of those were from me falling/jumping :B1:

The Good
Customizable guns were fun and interesting. New parts gave significant boost to fire power and I changed my gun layouts multiple times through a single chapter based on my needs.

The backpack gives you the ability to customize your guns while out of a base or hideout, allows you to craft some ammo, and both medication and filters.

The enemies were varied and enjoyable. My old favorite, the Librarian, definitely made itself noticed. :steamhappy:

The Bad
The dialog was horrendous. Timing was off during conversations overlapped horribly. The timing even when the NPCs were giving you directions was off. At one point an ally told me to turn right after I was half way down the path and looking to the next turn. Roughly 5+ seconds off appropriate timing. POLISH, POLISH, POLISH!!!!

Driving sucked. The boats and van turned slowly, giving very little control. Backing up, maneuvering, or otherwise was painfully slow and the whole experience was cumbersome and felt tacked on. "We're going to force you to row a boat, stop every 10-15 seconds, and then go through a stopping animation to shoot back at ranged enemies." :steamfacepalm:

Weapon attachments were inconsistent and often times not great with a flashlight or night vision goggles (NVG). I waited the whole game to get a closed reflex sight for the AK/Bulldog, but never gone one =( The flashlight/NVG would reflect so horribly off the optics at times, you were better off with iron sights or hip firing.

The characters did not feel like they mattered. At the mid point through the game, a main character is in danger and needs to be rescued, but I did not feel attached to them, I didn't feel invested in their outcome. The game didn't tug the heartstrings or build those relationships to get you to care.

The levels got tedious to explore. So much jumping around, figuring out if there were side paths, finding three bodies to loot for a miniscule amount of resources. Overall it was not rewarding to explore and I was fatigued quickly when I started trying to search every location. This was really noticeable on the desert level.

The physics/game engine/character interactions. Everything bumped awkwardly, so much sliding off cliffs you're trying to jump up to when the fourth jump you finally reach up and grab the ledge. It was horribly inconsistent and speaks to a game made by amateur developers, not a third run for a AAA title. I found a ton of floating guns and clothing pieces. Reloading save games was a roll of the dice to see what changed! POLISH, POLISH, POLISH!!!!

Guns jamming sucked. It wasn't fun, it didn't add much to the gameplay other than frustration. If I'm collecting scrap and chemicals, why can't some of the cloth scrap I picked up double as a rag to scrub the junk off your gun? I can completely change the air line system on my Tikhar while in the field, but I can't grab the corner of my own shirt to clean off a gun?

Why tf does the Librarian have a ♥♥♥♥ and balls all flopping around in your face?

The Verdict
Bottom line, would I recommend this to a friend?
If you've played the first two and were a fan, AND you got this at a "sale price" ($30 or under) then I'd say go for it, finish the story if you want. I was not impressed by this game and while I appreciate completing it, I wouldn't play it again, whereas I purchased the Metro 2033 Redux because the original was great.

If you're not interested or invested into the Metro games, then I'd give this a hard pass. It's an interesting environment, but the inconsistencies and tedious gameplay are a turn off.

When I think of games where it was more fun to explore, I think the Fallout series, or The Witcher 2/3. In those games there were actual side quests directing you to important locations. They also rewarded you either in story/character development, or through loot, for completing those tasks. Heck, even giving a region a name and giving you a detailed map which is revealed, or... something... would make it feel more satisfying to explore.

If you're a shooter, stick to shooting. I loved the first two Metro games, while this one feels forgettable.

Unfortunately this game doesn't stand up to the first or to last year's DOOM release. DOOM was my GOTY for 2016! =)

I just sat down and beat this game in about a 7 and a half hour single session. You could probably beat it under 7 if you're not as potato as me =P

This game was "ok" during the combat and missions. The non-combat "fetch" missions were pretty lame. Compared to the first Wolfenstein, it was much more difficult to choose the stealth route. The guns were very powerful on the standard/normal difficulty and dual wield shotguns allowed you to pretty much face charge anything the game threw at you.

Difficulty was fair on normal, however, my recklessness and stubbornness caused me to die multiple times. Changing my strategy or slowing down always found a win and nothing was so frustrating I felt I needed to lower the difficulty or take a break from the game.

So why the anti-recommendation? Because this game was way too far out in left field!

From gratuitous violence and unnecessary nudity to unbelievable* racism and SJW talking points, the story side of this game fell completely flat. (*As in I really couldn't suspend disbelief, it was like propaganda, not anything close to how I could picture alternative reality)

Let's go through the SJW checklist-
  • Anti-Semetism? Check
  • Hooded KKK walking around America because the Nazis won the war? Check
  • The working man can't get ahead? Check
  • Hadicapable? Check
  • Black women in tech? Check
  • Black woman leadership? Check
  • America as an imperialist super power? Check
  • Wall street took all my money? Check
  • Drugs are fun? Check

You couldn't find more SJW talking points in a college sociology course! And this is what I could remember 8 hours later, they easily could have had more my untrained eye didn't catch.

Just make an effin story based game on fighting Nazis and stop shoving your "values" down people's throats!

The only positive value in the game was when the Nazi chick's choking out the black chick and tells her not to throw a "sub-human label" on someone to hate them and dismiss them. Thank you!! Please judge people as individuals and stop collectively making decisions about them! That's called prejudice!

First game was just.. sigh Soooo much better...

Bottom Line: would I recommend this to a friend? Absolutely not. I would say play the first one, but would giving this Dev your money really be a good choice?

*Edit 12/3/17: I forgot to mention the absolute horror of trying to get this game to run. I had to verify the game files after the download (170+ files missing) and I twice removed the ~15 second start up intro videos. Eventually it seemed to be luck if I could get the game to not freeze on the main menu or the first loading screen when you launch your save file. It's on my twitch stream where I tried over and over to get the game going by launching, ending task, and repeat, until the game "caught" and would work. I took the recommendation from Google and suspended ingame overlay & shadow play from GeForce Experience, but it didn't fix the issue or even seem to help much.

The re-imagination of the WWII era Wolfenstein comes to us in a 1960s package. Is this game any good and was it worth Total Biscuit's GOTY 2014?

Yeah... it really kicks ass!

Story wise you start off in the WW2 era, fighting Nazis, after suffering a combat induced 14 year concussion/vegetable state you come-to in 1960. The Nazis have won the war. They control all of Europe, much of the USSR territory and the US has surrendered. Their campaign, however, still continues into Africa.

You play as the classic William "BJ" Blazkowicz, Nazi killer extraordinaire! At first I thought his voice acting and speech delays were a bit awkward until I realized he's really just a nice, "good 'ol boy" who is happy to be of assistance. There's just a thinking delay a bit before he speaks. Once I acclimated to how he talked, he really shined as a stand up guy with strong character. There are many, many other memorable characters and during the first mission you're given the choice of which friend to save, and in turn, unlock certain skills and pathways available during the main campaign. I choose Fergus and after doing some reading online it seems it was the better choice and a second play through wouldn't grant too much satisfaction. A second playthrough, with both story lines, is required for 100% achievement completion.

Your missions in the game are great and holy cow are the transitions and story telling cut scenes spot-on. I was genuinely impressed at how they ended events and transitioned you to the next sequence. The story telling first-person shooter is not dead! After coming to in 1960, you go down the road BJ knows best, which is Nazi killing. I won't go into depth on the missions at risk of spoiling anything, but did you know the Nazi's have a base on the moon? *hint hint, nudge nudge*

Gun play was satisfying. The models looked gorgeous and were clearly Nazi-inspired. You can choose to dual-wield almost any gun you pick up for increased firepower, but you lose the ability to aim down the sights. Alternatively you're given a suppressed pistol, knife, and throwing knives to also go about stealth killing enemies. It's good to be practiced with both approaches as a stealth approach saves ammo, health & armor, and stealth killing commanders in the various areas will show on the map where the collectibles are. On the other hand the alarm will be raised at times and you will need to be ready to go in guns blazing.

The enemies are fairly repetitive, but the landscape varies enough to not make any fight boring. You do have occasional bosses and those fights felt pretty epic. As a whole the fights and story felt "epic", larger than life, and like you were really doing something special.

You have a perk tree for stealth, tactics (precision shooting), assault (dual wield), and demolition (boom?). Each tree helps you do each skill better, and gives a slight progression feeling to the game. I was able to unlock every skill in stealth and tactics fairly easily, but couldn't get 1 in the assault tree and demolition I more or less ignored =/

Bottom line, would I recommend this to a friend? Absolutely. If you like story focused first-person shooter games like Half-Life, or simply enjoy solidly built FPS games, then you'd absolutely enjoy Wolfenstein: The New Order. This game continued to impress as it progressed, I never got bored, and only occasionally got annoyed when I couldn't figure out how to get a collectible shown on the map (I typically Googled it).

Played on an i5-2500k, GTX 970, 8GB DDR3, HDD.

Pretty well made game, game mechanics work well for the most part. Art work is strong and noticeable, using a pencil sketching style, but the reason for not recommending this game is because I simply didn't enjoy it. I don't care for survival games too much, but tried this out at the recommendation of a friend. Despite not caring much for the genre I trucked through and did complete a single "story" and survived until day 23 :)

This War of Mine is played as a small group of survivors living in a large house. Each night 1 survivor may leave to search for goods while the others stay and sleep or guard the house. Your house has many utilities you can build- a small garden, a heater, rat trap for food, a stove, etc. You use these utilities and workstations to craft goods you'll need to survive. While you can eat raw food, cooked food does much better for filling you up. You'll need to board up your house where, I would assume, collateral damage from the war has created large gaps in the walls and windows. Both your day cycle to build items, harvest goods, and interact with other survivors, traders, etc, and your night cycle to find new goods, are timed with a clock in the top left corner.

Your survivors each have a different skill set. I got Bruno, Pavle, and Katia as my starting three. Bruno is a good cook who can create food using fewer resources. Pavle runs fast so he can avoid danger or run from it while scavenging. Katia is a good bargainer so she can squeeze more out of your trade deals. Later on I got Cveta and Arika with "Good with children" and "Sneaks quietly" skills, respectively. I saw in the build your own game section there are quite a few survivors, all with their different skill sets.

The scavenging is done only during the night and if you don't manage to exit voluntarily before the night ends, then your character gets "caught out" and will have a delay before he and his scavenged goods return. To scavenge you first pick who will go, then where. The where is very important as each area has certain resources- building materials, weapons parts, food, traders, and even danger! (Gasp!) Revisiting some areas will show development of the region with new people taking over or previously present people disappearing. Scavenging is as simple as clicking on highlighted rubble, desks, drawers, cabinets, etc, and after a moment to inspect the spot, you get an inventory screen showing what you have and what you can take.

War is hell. I knew this well before playing this game and I'm strongly against coercive force and am a supporter of the non-aggression principle. I like to role play and empathize with the characters I'm playing as, whether it's Mass Effect, Deponia, or Civilization 5. I made the decision early on I would help anyone I could and wouldn't harm another person. I knew somewhere in the "teens" days I wouldn't make it far and I was ok with it. Trading couldn't get me enough food or bandages, bandits hit the home every single night, and I couldn't scavenge everything needed. I stole from armed bandits a few times, very carefully, and thanked the Lord for Pavle's large inventory space and his fast running. In the end, we just didn't make it.

If you're into survival games, and the life and death aspects of it, then pick this up. It has an amazing human element to it and I think was extremely realistic in how it handled the precious few resources available and the decisions on how to use them. All in all, bottom line is I would not freely recommend this game to a friend. It has a niche audience and isn't fun. It's challenging and engaging, but this means it's not for everyone.

Just finished this game. Based on in game play time, it was about 5 hours, I'd add about another hour for the cut scenes between missions, giving it a whopping ~6 hours total play time for the campaign, a far cry from the 8h42m-9h15m listed on howlongtobeat.com.

So you'll notice right away, this is a negative review, why? Did I enjoy the game? Were there any issues? How was the story? I'll go over all these below, but the negative review comes from the bottom line- would I recommend this game to a friend...? Nah...

Let's start off with the meat and potatoes of the game.

If you told me at the start this game was an anime episode, I wouldn't have believed you for a second. This is about human life settling on an alien ice planet, fighting vicious, gigantic alien beasts (Akrid).. No effin way this is an anime episode, man... but it is.

The characters are overly cliched, in an anime style and fashion (google Rick or Luka & Lost Planet), and the story was extremely cliched. The main character loses his memory, meets these over-the-top anime characters, and then he immediately goes out to fight aliens and clear out their hives on their behalves. Facility doors open automatically for the Akrid creatures, key characters 1 shot enemies in cut scenes, even when aiming behind their back, and the bad guys don't ever shoot the good guys, even when they're vulnerable. UNGH, there were so many logical pit falls in this game!

Combat wise I think I ran out of ammo once or twice, but it didn't last more than 5 or 6 seconds for me to just run over and pick up another gun off the ground. Your Akrid enemies have red weak points, sometimes hard to hit, especially with the technical issues below. Human enemies use various guns, turrets, and mechs or walkers of various power. Difficulty wise, I played on normal and only died on 1-shot Akrid kills and the final boss. I literally didn't die from any other skirmish or combat. Combat was kinda idiot proof with ammo, guns, and mech suits scattered EVERYWHERE.

Spoiler: The final boss fight you hop in your gundam suit, flying over the planet surface while fighting the enemy gundam with your plasma swords. Yeah.... anime....

Input wise, you'll want to play this game with a controller, as I did, to avoid the confusion of constantly being prompted for Xbox 360 buttons, this is a really negative point for a PC port, this criticism is similar to the one I gave for Dead Light. Keep in mind I didn't have an Xbox controller active when I started playing this game.

Other technical issues plaguing this game included off sync audio during all cut scenes, even after restarting the game, and huge screen tearing issues during fights where big creatures or mech units were supposed to be causing the screen to shake or vibrate. Instead I got full horizontal screen tearing. I almost quit playing the game because of this as it was near impossible to aim at the stupid little red weak spots of the enemies.

Bottom line, would I recommend this to a friend? No. The anime features, overly cliched story & characters, horrible 1 liners, and technical issues aren't worth the fuss. Did I have fun? Yeah, it was ok, but there were a lot of frustrations along the way.

Transistor is Super Giant's follow up to their critically acclaimed Bastion title.

Similar to Bastion, Transistor is a story driven action/beat-em-up. The differences, however, are immediately noticeable. Transistor has a similar top down angle and you're welcome to hack and slash at your enemies, similar to Bastion, but, also like Bastion, combat can have more of a refined edge ;). Where Bastion's higher level combat mechanics involved timing and positioning, Transistor has a completely different system where you can pause the game, go into planning mode, and then execute your attacks. Your attacks are each different "chips" or "programs" you put in your sword and each can be utilized as a primary ability, an upgrade to one of your other abilities, or a passive ability, CRAZY COOL!

You'll learn really creative combos with your programs as you play through the game and these various formulas are easily configured to match your play style. Whether you like summons

The story is set in the future after your character, "Red", is framed for the murder of her friend. You're in possession of the murder weapon, Transistor, a sword which acquires programs you can configure as your various attacks & abilities. Your motive is chasing down the shadow organization responsible both for the murder and framing you for it. The enemies you encounter are similar to glitches in the matrix, programs or creatures who come to life with their own abilities, upgrades, and tactics.

The art style and music in this game was top notch, absolutely amazing. Narration was done by the same Logan Cunningham who narrated Bastion, but the narration is done from the perspective of the sword, Transistor!

Bottom Line: Holy cow this is a great game, well designed for 2 play throughs, please get it today.
