A turn-based strategy adapting a very well-known yet peculiar visual style. Based on painted marginalia found on numerous historical European manuscripts, an exciting battlefield is formed right on the page of beautifully illustrated books, engaged by their very illuminators, the Inkulinati.

The concept of the game is, to say the least, very amazing and well executed. Every single "units" (called Beasts) you can use in this ink tainted turn-based battles are based on elements found on real historical manuscripts. Yes the people of the past were as silly as us and they certainly made use of their silliness on these marginalias. There are spear wielding rabbit, sword wielding dog, frogs with hat, imp with face for butt, pope cat, puppy-eating hare... yeah they are all usable Beasts in this game, each with their own abilities. The entire game made used of this silly medieval doodles artstyle and the plot, the dialogues certainly have the humor to match the visual.

So what about the gameplay? When I get into games with amazing visual style like this I tend not to expect much, as it tends to end up either simplistic or even underwhelming, guess you cant have everything in one package. And yet, I absolutely love Inkulinati gameplay. The core gameplay is simple, you play on a 2d environment based on paper page. You "draw" your beasts by spending ink, then you can control them and your own avatar (called Mini) on this battlefield and perform different actions. The goal of a match depends on the battle type but it usually requires a lot of killing and ink-shed. Real simple, but it has a variety of mechanic and elements mixed well together to make battle always different and engaging:

- Battle takes place in a 2d paper page, with your units going field to field, platform to platform. As such the battlefield can be restrictive, makes positioning matters a lot (especially since you can push units through others to their death).
- A wide range of abilities, status effect, and environmental effect making your choice of Beasts and skills matter a lot. Great variety in build-making.
- Ink is the main battle resource as you need to spend it to draw your Beasts and will have to gain it back one way or another during the battle, making the gameplay more that just Beasts beating each other to their death. Ink cost of Beast varies and can even be increased between battles, encourages the use of different Beasts,
- A type of journey mode campaign with a bit of roguelike element, where you advance through battles, events and bosses, earning more Beasts, Abilities and different stats as you progress.

There is simply so much to this game, yet it still makes me wish for more. Overall, I would greatly recommend if the visual style intrigue you, you can be certain it will keep this style through the whole game, and if you're fine with turn-based combat, this will surely keep you hooked in.
